- Strange Bird Bug. This strange creature looks and acts like a hummingbird, but has six legs and antennae. What in the world is it? Well, it is a species of moth referred to as the Hummingbird Hawk Moth. It independently evolved similar features to the hummingbird and fills a similar niche, but don't be fooled...it's an insect!

I live in the south of France where these moths are quite common.
We call them Moro Sphinx. They are incredibly attracted to the color blue, because they pollinate lavender and rosemary flowers. They will follow you around if you're holding something blue, like a ball point pen cap.
I envy you-
I will put a blue T-shirt on next time I try and film them, as they always fly away when I disturb them 😂
I saw one of these when I was a kid and my parents didn't believe me when I tried to tell them what it looked like.
Yeah? WELL FUCK THOSE PEOPLE! Fuck em and their negativity! You don't need to hang on to that shit cos it's in the PAST man and they STILL shitty people but you've moved on!
PEACE!
I just saw one Today and thot it was a very little hummingbird
Just saw one this evening for the first time. Was awestruck at this amazing creature. Like a garden fairy arriving just after sunset. It was truly incredible.
Me too so beautiful.
I love hummingbird moths. I feel like it's never a real summer season for me unless I see one.
I never herd of a humming moth until today. And I'm 21. Oh well, i never liked summer anyways
@@ms.pirate Where do you live?
Aww
I saw one of these at my job today, and I was baffled by it. I decided to look it up based on what it looks like and typed "hummingbird mixed with a bee" and was not dissapointed.
They are so CUTE!!
It looks like a pokemon if you think about it
its totally a volcarona
Its beautifly
Cutifly
It looks like my friend Maeve
this was in my back yard I thought it was a pokemon
+Daniel Kahn xD
bad j
Lmao same xD
I saw one of these several months ago for the first time, and it is like a humming bird with those fast flapping wings :)
They´re very friendly, sometimes they just visit you to stay a while and then the keep on doing their moth stuff ♥
I swear what brought me here is thae FACT that I just seen this Bird\bug on my flower.
One flew in my neighbors house and she killed it in the most inhumane way out of fear (she’s an old lady who lives by herself, she tried letting it out but it wouldn’t leave). I can’t get the image out of my head of the way she described it. And now finding out it’s a pollinator just breaks my heart, poor harmless baby was just lost and needed guidance😫 RIP sweet child
I live in Indiana and I think Hummingbird Hawk Moth can be found here because one time my found and took a picture of it was during the spring time. Also may I say this is so damn cute!
Imagine that thing flying into your house.I have a bit of a phobia about bugs (although I think they're cool) so I'd probably flip out and call the fire department or something-assuming I survived the massive heart attack it would bring on.
I just saw one and decided to look it up It was so elegant hovering from flower to flower. It was amazing to see.
aww i love to little guys! the ones in our garden here i know as 'sphinx moths' or hawk moth- they are lovely little pollinators! :D
I find them even more interesting than actual hummingbirds.
I've seen these landscaping over the years and I only recently was able to tell they weren't a humming bird. In PA
Hummingbird moth -- I spotted one in our garden several years ago. It was a cool looking insect that definitely resembled the hummingbird species.
Saw one today and had to look up on what on earth it was as it looked amazing but just like a hummingbird!!! Was only the two long antenna bits that made me look as otherwise I'd have sworn it was a bird! Awesome creature
Man i thought i discovered a new species of bird when i saw it
My son told me about seeing something that looked like a hummingbird with antennae in our back yard. This must be what he saw. He almost caught it, which would have been cool to see for a bit. He always lets his prisoners go after viewing them for a little while, so no worries about him hurting it. Cool insect!
..something keeps flying around my head in the mornings. I can feel its wind and it's loud. it's too small for a hummingbird, but pretty big for a bug.. keeps diving at flowers
I love them. They always flying in my garden.
Thanks god I've been searching for this like 6 years, since I first saw it. I thought I was going crazy cause I though its a hummingbird but in my country there are none. And its kinda creepy that I also have a picture of the moth on lavender flower.
One of these fled in my garden a while ago, fascinating creature i must say.
I have also seen one about 8 years ago. I found out what it was in my Butterfly and Moth field guide. Very cool creature.
I saw these in northern Italy in Veneto region at Madonna del Covolo under Mt Grappa. They are so pretty but very difficult to photograph because you rarely see them. I actually thought it may have been a hummingbird so I asked a local. We don't have either hummingbirds in Sydney or those gorgeous little bird like moths. Thanks for video
We have the flowers at 0:22 and this insect is very attracted to them. I could see it returning to this very flower everyday at 4 PM :) I live in Eastern Europe.
Oh so that is what I have been seeing, not often, but I have had a few WTF moments seeing them In my garden in Japan.
I saw these very recently in the South of France, at Salagon near Mane and Dauphin. I was able to point out to my spouse they were moths and not birds, and got a clip I do have up on either of my two channels on YT, called BUTTERFLY BUSH. Salagon is a 12th c. church on a Roman villa/bath, in Provence, and there are extensive gardens. I really recommend the visit even though it's up in some Lubéron and Alps mountains, but really, these insects are just lovely! They almost fooled me!
Once spotted on the southern coast of England......fascinated to see such a creature which took me quite a while observing to be sure it wasn't a bird.
Lovely! These fellows like to visit my family's garden in the warm seasons!
They are welcom in my flowery garden, haven't seen them this season. They aren't common in my country the Netherlands but occasionelly they visit my garden. These insects are so fascinating, remember the first time i saw one....i was confused, for a moment i thought it was a bird but then noticed their antennas and realised it was an insect. They became my most loved insect next to the bumblebee, the hoverfly and of cause all butterflies.
I saw one of these today in England for the first time. I was convinced it was a hummingbird but then I saw it had no bill like a bird does. The resemblance to this moth and a hummingbird is incredible.
They love my front garden. Freak me out at first now a welcome sight :)
I guess some animals took birds and the bees to literally...
I was once touring in some foothills of India and saw several of these. Thought they were humming birds at that time. Then I learned there are no humming birds in India and these were actually moths. I could swear they looked just like humming birds. :-)
i've actually seen one of these before. it was confusing because it actually looks and acts just like a hummingbird but you can still tell its a bug. weird...
I have a few of these in my yard, even tried to get a picture but didn't come out all that great
It's a humming bird hawk moth ,I have a lot of these in my garden in sw France ,I filmed mine with an iPad and unfortunately the wing speed is slowed down ,giving it an ungainly flight
I live in VT, and the first time I saw one of these, I was amazed. I was SURE it was a hummingbird, but unlike a hummingbird, it wasn't afraid when I came close. Then I saw it had a furry body and the coloring was off. Then I realized it was a huge moth that looked just like a hummingbird. Amazing. Are these moths found all over the country?
I LOVE YOU! These videos are amazing! I'm very passionate about creatures of all sorts and thank you for bringing us these treasures!
My son and I found one of these in our neighborhood!
I saw one of these a few times feeding off flowers near my patio. The first time, I thought it was a humming bird but then became suspicious when it didn't fly away as I approched (humming birds are very skittish). I got a good look at it and realized it was a type of moth. I loved watching it. It didn't mind that I was just a few feet away. I came inside and searched the web and found your video. Very cool.
I'm not really sure what I like better, the hummingbird hawk moth or an actual hummingbird.
We got these things all over central Texas, these little bastards do the night time moth thing, so if you have a porch light on, and their native, I've seen people dive off porches. What Is It!!!???
awwwwww, I'm not a fan of bugs but this little guy is adorable.
you would rethink that when one will land gently in your hand with it's six legged feet's and it's gigantic insect abdomen....
very good film and pictures. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
I saw dozens flying aroud honey suckle flowers. Beautiful creatures.
Wow... Beautiful hummingbird hawk moth👌👌
When I lived in Tucson Arizona I saw my first, then after moving to Central Missouri, I started seeing them here they are very kool little creatures and do much good!!!
I caught one today and I was like no way I just caught a hummingbird and I looked closer and it was that moths so I wanted to see what kind of moth it was and I found this vid and it's the exact same one I'm in love with these moths and I'm going to see if I can order some and start a breeding Conley just so I can see the beauty everyday
I had one of these feeding off my Hosta flowers yesterday... very cool!
my sister and I saw one of these as we went out to play pokemon go. we thought it was a real pokemon for a sec
The music was kinda catchy and it really fit in with the theme.
These little guys come to visit my butterfly bush. They're fun to watch.
para mi es hermoso..me gustaría ver uno cerca =)
Huh I see them almost every day in spring.
What's sad is that this bug exists in my country, but everyone calls it the hummingbird (which doesn't live anywhere near here) because they don't know its real name.
Very nice and so beautiful 💖💖💖💖💖
I just saw a similar bug outside by my fence and Arborvitaes, only it's much smaller, and it's black. It's not the same thing. I saw several of them, and they reminded me of a Hummingbird. They're a little bigger than a housefly. They kept hovering like a Hummingbird, with a similar shape. Very strange.
i think i found one of my new favorite channels
I saw one of these at night and went to observe it because I thought it was a hummingbird. Noped the fuck out of there when I realized that a bird was absolutely not what I was seeing.
Cutiefly's evolution! 😍😍😍
I actually saw one this year for the 1st time and managed to get footage it's so Awesome.😊
I'm on holiday in Majorca for a week and I've seen one everyday ... It's a hawk moth, it's just like a tiny hummingbird !
I live in a coastal city called Negombo in Srilanka. I saw about dozen of them in my garden this evening. They feed on flowers and arrive in the dusk. this is the first time I saw this moth in Srilanka (July 2016). The ones we have are grayish in color.
Beautiful and rare
It's so cute!
It is quite common inmy hometown and people gave it a nickname called "flying shrimp" because of its funny looking rear.
This is what they look like, Misty
The hummingbird hawk moth...fascinating
I saw these birds in Japan where l living. They are sims the small hummngbird and big bee... Very nice!!!
This and hummingbirds chase me around
They love our Bee Balm flowers
looks like i have a new favorite bug!
HOW BEAUTIFUL THEY ARE 😱
I live in Croatia, and I was going to Adriatic sea for a vacation, and then, one night I saw them and at first thought they were hummingbirds, but then I looked at 'em better and was like WTF?! Thanks for explaining.
These moths make good tinder for fires.
saw one today for the first time in my back garden on the buddleia bush.
I have seen one of these in Le Man lake in Switzerland! The locals told me that there were not humming birds in swiss but that was pretty similar.
I saw this at my cottage, it scared the crap out of me and I ran like hell, because I'm scared of bees and I thought it was a bee.
Saw this last night omg thank you recommendations
Thought it was a hummingbird then saw stripes and thought is that a big bee?!
they are so pretty
I seen those in front of my grandma's house she has a lot of flowers in her yard
Just saw one of these tonight in Maryland. My cat thought about catching it then freaked out and just hid.
I saw that once (to be honest not even once) and i was so confused about it, thanks for the info!
World is full of wonderful things
Ive seen one in northern canada. It was feeding in a purple vetch patch.
Wow awesome!
I've seen one of these before. We thought it was a hummingbird at first.
I have a flowering bush in my front yard and last fall we were trimming them down for Christmas lights and it was about 7 ish that we saw a black one and I thought it was a black humming bird
Omg ive seen one of these and have been searching for info about it for years!!!
First time I saw tht I was like what's that, a humming bird.. We don't have them in Australia... Then it landed in all these legs and I flipped out
I literally just saw one for the first time in my life in my front garden humming around the flowers. I did not know what it was until I googled it and here I am. The Internet is a wonderful thing. I live near Bath in Somerset and I am in my 50s and have never seen one before. Beautiful little thing and the wings were moving so fast as it was hovering !!
Thts y it's called a hummingbird moth :D
I had one of these in my garden last. Week. I didn't even no they were a thing.
Litterly madness, I'm waiting for a unicorn mouse xt and a pegasus hedgehog ❤️❤️❤️
I did actually think it was a hummingbird to start with. I was mind blown.
But I had Todo some quick mental agility and look for evidence!
I see them often in summer on my balcony
See them in the flower bed all the time. We call them humming bugs.
Omg it's beautiful ❤ I want one! Lol
