Thanks Jordy for the advice on selling. I've been a woodworker for 35 years, and now just started doing power carving spoons and small wood spirits. So far, I've given them all away, and now I have people asking how much. You should make a little wood spirit with big old Vulcan ears on it, and send it to Rob! Hahaha

Alberta boy says. .....couldnt agree with you more! !!
I gave away my first 4 carvings....then sold one and the second one they offered me more than I was going ask...from there every NEW LEVEL..I get to my price goes up a little...why ?...just like you said - more better tools cost more money and I spend more time making them more detailed. ..better product higher price.
    Giving back...no Brainer.
2 kids across the street from me got a mini Sasquatch for the boy and a mini Owl for his older sister ( from " Santa" ) and now they bring me " designs" for new things hoping that I can get a job doing it for " Santa "
How do you not get the warm fuzzy feeling from that.....Priceless I tell you.

Hi, found your channel days ago, I'm a stay at home mom of special needs kids, and I used to paint... and no sales. I live in a country where people buy paintings on ikea. So today, with your help, I carved my first wood spirit. Will carve more and will give them like you suggest. Anyway, it's so relaxing, made my day, so thank you! Will follow for more! You got some amazing sculptures, congratulations!

I did exactly what you said. I gave many carvings away and started upgrading tools as I started selling carvings. Every carving that gets out to a new home is advertising forever.
You have to raise prices and you still will not be able to keep up with demand.
You will like the Stihl battery saw. I have the 200 and the quick charger. About $700 US with the large battery.

Absolutely the way...gave the first few away, then cheap...got better and prices have gone up...now I'm getting commission pieces...hahaha...not bad for exactly 1 yr in

As an artist for decades, my house and my cabin is full of my work. My closets have paintings stacked ten deep, my rustic furniture is in my basement shop holding tools, my carvings are scattered everywhere! I have yet to sell anything for what I wished I could get, I have always be told how great my work is, yet where is the cash?
I will always create art, no matter who buys, how much they pay. I hope that when I really need the money, my inventory of work will find their way into the hands of paying clients, but for now I’m focused on my craft, not my sales, I mow lawns for money and for now my art is my passion not my paycheck. Jordy man your work has way, way, way improved just in the few years I have been watching your channel, thanks for what you do and who you are!!

Thanks for sharing this.😊 Good advice. My first Dremel carved birdhouses ( inspired by your wood spirits) were gifts for my daughter and grandsons. Had great fun making them, and I am getting requests to make more and for pay. I'm slowly getting more tools and supplies as I go as well. Had the Dremel and flex shaft already, got the flame bur, just got a torch, and a dremel cutting attatchment with the cutting bits, and have a list for more tools to add to my collection. Just so happy to be working on, and towards, something I love doing. Thanks for the instruction, insight, inspiration, and advice. 💯
Eventually I'll be trying the big carvings with chainsaws,... exciting to look forward to.✨✨✨

I agree with your take on getting your stuff out there, 'cause what good does it do someone, no matter how talented, to have an unsold inventory of artwork because it's priced too high? Years ago I read a story about a now world-famous actor who used to carry a check in his wallet made out to himself for a cool million bucks. He said that he told himself that he was going to cash that check one day. Couldn't at the time, though, because he was pretty much working for peanuts just because he loved his craft. Thanks for your perspective on this subject!

I always give away my wood carvings because after putting 180 hours into them I can’t ask for that much money. But welding junk together only takes a few hours and it really doesn’t need to be perfect. Your type of carving will fit right into that same mentality.
    Thanks again.

Yep I think that’s why so many artists are referred to as “ starving artists” lol , example I went to a local artists show in my city , most of them the artists had ridiculous prices I thought , paintings 1000 , very very basic hand made welded chairs 750 , a cool design made up of bent rebar with wrapped yarn around it 1200 , 50 bucks of materials , understand some of them takes hours but not everyone is worth 50 bucks an hour or whatever , most were very unreasonable , I know it won’t be cheap for a handmade , original , but it needs to be reasonable , they have a price per hour . Not making money if you can’t sell like you say . Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your work man

As I get better then I feel they are worth more and wow they sell with head-swelling compliments. I went from carving to welding yard art. I don’t keep track of what I sell very well but at the end of the year I added it up. Wow it was a lot of money. I love what you are doing and I always wanted to carve those very faces you are showing us how to make them. I really am going to do some with your help. Thanks big time.

LOL on the whole pricing deal it's a pain in the ass trying to learn and it's painful a customer called me said they wanted something tropical for their pool WeChat it had no idea how I was going to do what I was going to do but we decided on a palm tree okay I don't know couple hundred dollars it turned out kickass I had a full week in it. And then they wanted me to deliver it. That was a very valuable lesson I don't begrudge giving it to him for what I told him that I would and it has been good advertisement I have some bigger ones sold at a reasonable price now. I guess it's always going to be a learning curve when you do all kind of different things

I was shocked at how much you can actually get for your wood spirits. I dropped off 6 carvings at a small shop and they sold for 30 to 70 dollars each, and they were small cottonwood bark carvings. It is hard to put a price on something you made, but people are willing to pay for something that you can't buy at Walmart.
