We're back with some recently finished books and some yummy current reads! Join us!
If you liked the first Thursday Murder Club, keep going. The series is gold. ❤❤❤
Thanks. I plan on it. Might even get Tayler started on it.
Hi Star! I feel like it’s definitely one I’d love. ❤️
Yes! IMO the second was better than the first! Keep getting better!
If you like Stephen King, I would recommend The Shining. The movie not only barely scratches the surface of the story, it omits important story elements (like just about the entire backstory that gets them to the Overlook) and it completely changes the ending. The book is outstanding IMO.
Thanks for the information. I will certainly look to read it.
I grew up reading Agatha Christie. My dad and I would get her books from the library, sit on the couch drinking tea, and reading. Great memories!
My dad was so excited when he hit 80 last year. It's been long enough that he's forgotten most of the endings and can reread all her books. 😅😊
This is really special! What a nice memory. And cheers to your dad. Here’s to fresh experiences with Agatha Christie! 🍻
How can you inspire me to read after inspiring me to knit😳? Now I have to divide my time between the two (I’m not clever like you to do both at the same time) But I do love both podcasts 😉
😂 Sorry to do that to you. Thanks for the support. Glad you are enjoying them.
Audiobooks.
Tayler, I was anxious to hear what you thought of Verity. lol Don't leave that one lying around.
I enjoyed: one by one by Ruth Ware, The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine, the Island by Adrian Mcinty....oh so many more. 😊
Thanks for sharing!!
I have read “ The Hacienda” and “Mexican Gothic”. Both excellent and definitely recommend. There are some similarities between them but also unique!
Good to know! Thank you!❤️
The book I recommend to everyone is From The Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz. Most Dean Koontz books I would describe as “Stephen King lite”. This book I describe as literature that will open your mind to new ideas and realities. Every time I run across a copy at a book sale I buy it because I keep giving copies away.
Oh, awesome! Gotta check that out. Thank you! ❤️
Loved your show. Very entertaining. 😂😂😂
Thanks so much! ❤️❤️❤️
I’m gonna check out House Across the lake and the Paladin book. I’m enjoying the channel! 📚📚📚📚📚👍🏻
Let us know what you think about Paladin's Grace. It was a pleasant surprise for me. 😁
How am I just seeing you have a book vlog too. Knitting and reading are my favorites! (I recommended Storygraph to you on your knitting channel). I love learning about new books. I finished How to Solve Your Own Murder. It was a fun little book, along the Thursday Murder Club lines from my understanding. I’m currently reading Tress of the Emerald Sea and it may be my favorite ready of the year (20 books so far). A fun cozy-ish fantasy. Now I have to go catch up on the previous episodes. Loved it, keep it up!
That's great! So happy that you have found us.
I've read all of Riley Sagers but two books the house across the lake and his latest one... In the middle of the night
We enjoyed house across the lake.😁
I'm glad YT led me to your channel; it's refreshing and a fabulous take on reviewing books. I love your different categories, too! So, I've read The Hacienda and Mexican Gothic and loved both. Currently, I'm reading Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and One Dark Window. I'm looking forward to your future drops!
Welcome aboard! Thank you for the kind praise. We will be putting up new videos very soon. Keep an eye out for them.
If youre liking T Kingfisher, A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking is hilarious, cozy fantasy with a great magical system. The main character's magical power is to control dough. Like she has a familiar that is a sentient sour dough starter. It's great.
Oh my gosh, this sounds like perfection. 😀
If one hadn’t read any books by T. Kingfisher, is this book a good place to start? My husband bakes his own sourdough bread….
Yes! Totally!
A good book is the The Spy Coast by Tess Gerritsen. Great book.
Awesome! Thanks for the recommendation.
I'm a huge Stephen King fan. My favorites are Salem's Lot and The Stand.
Awesome. I'm on the lookout for the Stand. I keep hearing it's great.
The stand is a journey to read. I did not like the miniseries that came out.
You two are awesome together! Love the video!
Thank you so much. That's always nice to hear.
Thursday Murder Club is so good. Definitely read the sequels. A suggestion if you like Sci-Fi is The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. Short, funny mystery about a cyborg and their human charges.
Ooh. Intriguing. We will have to look into that.
How did you feel about the ending? SPOILERS...
I didn't love that it's not really possible to solve the murders until everything is wrapped up at the end. Maybe I missed something, though, so what did you think?
The Body was in a book of 4 novellas called The Four Seasons which also had “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” in it. It’s been a while but it was a very good read and both movies did the novellas justice.
Oh awesome. I super stoked to read it.
The Road has a movie too.
Yes. Not sure if I'm willing to watch it though.
Totally agree about Verity.. it just went a tad too far
😂. True.
You two are a great duo! How do you find time to read so much AND knit? Great job at both podcasts. Thank you for adding great ideas for future reading ❤
Thank you so much. As for time, we just do it. Pick up our phones less and read more.
Hi guys, I've just discovered your channel and OMG I love you ! Following you from France with love ! 💛📚
Yay! Thank you! Glad you are loving or videos.❤️
Seeing Tayler smell the books...Real. Loving your content!
😂 It's her thing. Thank you.
The genre of books that you two enjoy is different from this “old” lady, but I just love to sit and knit my way through your lovely banter about books! Bravo you two!
Glad to hear that, and glad you are enjoying the videos. ❤️
Verity I wish I could wipe completely from my mind. My current read is Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano. I'm just 80 pages in, but I'm enjoying it. I like the hero in it. Recommended read would be: The Birth House by Ami McKay.
Agree, the Birth House was really good.
I was in a bookstore recently and a girl recommended One Dark Window to me, she raved about how good both books were. That’s been on my list for a while. I definitely will be reading it!
I believe Tayler will happily agree with that recommendation. ❤️
Enjoying your videos! Just wanted to recommend some others by T. Kingfisher.. The Hollow Places, The Twisted Ones .. both very Lovecraftian in feel (atmospheric, feeling of looming dread!), and also Nettle and Bone is imaginative and great!
Thank you for these! We really can't wait to break into more T Kingfisher. Her writing is just so immersive. ❤️
I completely agree with you on the book Verity, not a good recommendation. But I do want you to know Colleen Hoover has a lot of good books.
It Starts with Us then, It Ends with Us are two of my favorite reads. But luckily I read them before Verity, because I haven’t read Colleen Hoover since.
😂 Tayler may need to some time before she gets into another Hoover book.
Loving this! Could you explain how and when you are both reading so much? I’d love to know how you fit it into your day……
Haha... Well we both decided to just make time for it. Rather scroll on our phones are flick through the TV, we read. It's only an extra hour or two per day, but it really allows us to get more reading done.
I have enjoyed everything I have read by T. Kingfisher. You'd probably like "Nettle and Bone", which has a dark, gothic fantasy feel. Its a novella and could be read in one sitting. If you want something hilarious and more light hearted by her, then I would suggest "A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking". In the vein of dark, spooky fantasy, then Erin A. Craig also has some books for you. I'm particularly thinking of "A House of Salt and Sorrow" and "House of Roots and Ruin". Happy reading!
Ooo I’m loving these recommendations! Thank you Brenna. ❤️
My absolute favourite Stephen King is Storm of the Century. It's written like a theatre play. I found that so easy to imagine everything. Highly recommend. 😊
Thanks for sharing! We will keep our eyes out for it.
Really enjoying you two chatting about books! Here’s another recommendation for a completely different read. Jean Shepherd wrote some hilarious stories about him growing up during the depression in Indiana. Yup, the movie A Christmas Story is his stories. In Fact, he does the voice over in the movie! While I love the movie, his written stories are even better!
In God We Trust, AllOthers Pay Cash and Wanda Hickeys Night of Golden Memories And Other Disasters are my two favorites. Bet you can find them in a thrift store!
Oh neat. Looks like we have some nice ones to investigate.
I’m so glad to see that Tayler and I share another hobby. I love seeing what you guys are reading!
Enjoyed your video
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. ❤️
Great episode. Oh hey, don’t forget your library card. The Libby app gives you audiobooks and reading-books (and knitting magazines, Tayler). Carry on, kids!
Thank you! Will do! Branden uses Libby quite a lot and I’ve been listening to audiobooks with Hoopla and love having that option. ❤️
Verity was disturbing and oddly compelling! I couldn't put it down. BTW, I wasn't on GoodReads until your Wool Needles Hands podcast. Thank you! Thank you!
Disturbing and oddly compelling is exactly what Verity is. Perfect description! And so glad you’re enjoying Goodreads! Thank you for hopping over here to check us out as well. ❤️❤️
I own Verity but think I should save it for fall? Opinion? Love this series y'all are creating. So fun. I personally have started a "read my shelf challenge" and I have a friend choosing my books so it takes off the pressure from me. This month she chose "Gone with the Wind." Not sure if she is my friend or not anymore (jkjk) but I'm committed to reading all 828 pages of it. 😂
That's an awesome and clever idea. Love it.
So hard to pick a favourite Stephen King book but The Stand is def way up near the top! The Body was a novella in Different Seasons- great story. Tayler, you might like Weyward if you havent read it yet. Still waiting for my library to find me a copy of 3 Bags Full since your recommendation on WNH. Enjoying the new channel.😊
Thank you for your recommendations. Is Weyward by the author who wrote Dark Matter?
@@GoodBooksLately Weyward is by Emilia Hart and is told from the perspective of 3 women in 3 different time periods. I get a sense from some of your other reviews etc that you might enjoy it - I def did!
Oh awesome. I'll keep an eye out for it.
The Talisman is a wonderful stand alone Stephen king book that crosses into fantasy. Absolute best is the Gunslinger series. First book is really only an intro but has the best first line ever…”The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” That series you cry, laugh, and the characters become your good friends. Combo of futuristic and old west. Absolute must! My husband doesn’t like horror books but I convinced him to read it and he loved it and was just as emotionally invested.
I loved Eyes of the Dragon. Great book.
That's what I like to hear.
I'll check it out.
Resident librarian here woo-hooing about the Hoopla mention! Love that app 😍😍
Was also very excited to hear y’all finished The House across the Lake. I promise you, try some of Riley Sager’s other books. That one was a head scratcher for me, but The Last Time I Lied is one of my favorite books ever.
Yes, love the hoopla app as well as the Libby app. We do have another Riley Sager book lined up to read together, so hopefully we can get to it by the end of the month.
Just stumbled across your channel. I have The Hacienda and hope to pick it up soon. I read Mexican Gothic back in 2021 and remember really liking it. I've also read The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and own but haven't read Velvet Was the Night.
I'm super excited for Mexican Gothic and other books by Moreno-Garcia. I just love the whole vibe. I also picked up Vampires of El Norte (By Cañas) on Pango books for $8 and can't wait to crack into that one as well. ❤️
Just found your channel and love the vibes so far! Definitely love a good Riley Sager - highly recommend Home Before Dark around Halloween time bc it is so spooky! 😊
Thank you for checking out our channel! And we’re adding that to our list for spooky season. Thank you! ❤️
When I worked in the English Department at a middle school we taught the kids to do TAG+ statements=Title, Author, Genre plus the main character and his/her proplem (conflict) It reminds me of your one sentence rule.
That's awesome.
Tayler here! I love that idea!
I loved Star Wars, but only knew it from the movies. Sadly, since Disney took over, I have grown to hate it. But, I’ve never read any of the books, so I think reading a Star Wars book would be a good way to get into the Star Wars universe again. I look forward to the Star Wars book collection video!
Yes, the books have some great storylone and characters. Both Cannon and Legacy books. I feel you on the movies since Disney took over, but their are some great TV shows, especially animated.
yeah, The Road is a tough read.
It really is. 💯
The movie of The Road, was one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever watched….. given books are always better and more developed than a movie I think Brandon deserves a medal for finishing the book….. well done!
Ps I recently started reading again myself late last year so I am LOVING this (and the two of you together) 🥰
Thank you. Yeah, after reading The Road, I don't even want to see what they put into the movie.
I can only imagine how heavy that movie would be. It couldn’t do it (Tayler here). Even the cover of the book (from the movie) is intense. And I agree. Branden does deserve a medal. He’s a natural stoic and doesn’t express a lot outwardly when it comes to how books affect him, but I know this one did.
And we’re so happy you’re here and sharing in this with us! ❤️
Yeah, the movie was intense.
Another great video. I really enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club and I'm looking forward to continuing on. I really hope you both enjoy The Murder at the Vicarage. I loved it and Agatha Christie is one of my favourites authors. Happy Reading!
Yes, thank you. We are both excited to start it. We will be keeping you posted on what we think of it.
Love your content so far. I like the idea of giving a condensed synopsis but maybe for the finished books you could do a one sentence review instead.
Yeah, we are still working things out, but I think that works better. Thanks for the insight.
My husband’s family has a book club. We recently read The Murder at the Vicarage. I’m interested to see how you like it.
Friended you on Goodreads to follow along with your books and make it easy to add Want to Read books.
Hey that's awesome. We are eager to dive into it. You will certainly hear our take on it in the coming weeks. Thanks for the follow on Goodreads as well.
You two have stolen my heart!! You have great chemistry together and your love of books, as well as your love for each other, just shines right through. Have you read any Rebecca Yarros books? If not, give them a quick look. Also for thriller type books take a look at Frieda MacFadden.
Thank you so much! Frieda MacFaddenis on my list of books to pick up for sure.
Thanks so much for recommending paladin's grace! I am absolutely loving it and would have never found it if it weren't for you guys
Yay! That's great. It's so good and gets better and better the more you read. ⚔️👃🏻
I love watching you two together. Watching your other knitting channel and hearing about your husband frequently just seeing you two together is heartwarming! I not only love knitting and crochet but reading is also a passion of mine and always looking for something new to find a great book that I may not have chosen on my own. Keep up the great work! Thank you thank you
Thank you so much Charlene. This means a lot and I’m so glad you’re here. We have really enjoyed doing this together and we’re so glad folks are liking it as well. ❤️
My wife read The Spy and the Traitor for her book club months ago. I read his book about the Colditz prison from WW2. Prisoners of the Castle.
Oh, sounds interesting.
This is such a great idea! Watching you Taylor, on your knitting podcast and hearing you talk about Brandon makes me feel like he is an old friend. The rapport between you is heart warming. ❤️ I read Verity for a book club read and felt like it was a train wreck - I couldn’t not finish even though I did not enjoy it lol There was not a single character I liked. Also would not recommend to anyone
Great content, thanks both :) My husband & I always have two shared books on the go - one we read together / to each other & another audio book for the car & when we’re doing chores etc. I’m always appreciative of how alike & how differently we think about what we’re reading 😁 And I am a Stephen King constant reader - my favourite recent read is definitely Fairy Tale. Loved it & the audio version (narrated by Seth Numrich) is gold 💛
Oh, no! My list is now so long . . . I vibe with the books both of you choose. I'm so in trouble!
😂. Glad you are giving with us. ❤️
OK, Tayler, I gotta ask: What do you get out of sniffing the books? Cracks me up! I did know that "Stand by Me" was based on that Stephen King book. I haven't read it yet. Looking forward to seeing how you like it! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Jennifer! So I don’t know what it is but I’ve been a book sniffer since I was a kid. It’s the musty pages that seem to be nostalgic. But even new books do it for me. 🥴
@@GoodBooksLately Love the smell of a new book, but I'd be nervous about the thrifted ones, lest they have unsavory scents. LOL
Great episode! It was fun hearing your review of Verity! I'm sure I threw that thing against the wall when I read it a few years ago! 😂 I love the history/non-fic books, too, and will check out The Traitor and the Spy. I downloaded One Dark Window and will start it soon! I'm still trying to get my husband to pick out a "read together" book...
My TBR pile runneth over. 😊❤📚
Yay! That's great let us know how you enjoy those reads and what you end up deciding on as your read together book.
The Green Mile - My favorite Stephen king book. The movie was good but reading the book was amazing.
Stephen King is so underated by the literary world. "The Stand" is a masterpiece. "The Long Walk" is so good and a lesser known work. When I read it.. I thought it was new and was shocked it was kinda similar to "The Hunger Games" and then I realized it was written way before "The Hunger Games"! So good. 11/22/63 also a great read. I read everything but a lot books in the literature category than popular fiction... but Stephen King just writes people so well.
We keep hearing that about the Stand and Branden snagged a copy of the Long Walk today from a local used book store. Sounds great.
11/22/63 is a fantastic book!
I really enjoyed The Body. The movie and book are very similar I think. The other 2 King books I've read were The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Thr Long Walk. I highly recommend both and they also are fairly short so not intimidating if you're looking to try Stephen King for the first time.
Thank you. Those are both King books on the list to check out. Awesome.
"Murder at the Vicarage" is a great read. I'm a huge Agatha Christie fan and bemoan the fact that I de-cluttered my extensive library of her books on a house move several years ago. My favourite author is Jean M Auel and her Earth's Children series
I’m excited to embark on an Agatha Christie journey! And even though Murder at the Vicarage isn’t the first Miss Marple, I’ve heard it’s a great place to start. Thank you for the author recommendation. ❤️❤️
The way you felt about Verity is how I felt about Rebecca. Just checked Thursday Murder Club out at the library but haven't read it yet.
Really? Wow. Thursday Murder Club will be a fun one though.
I thought the reveal at the end of Verity was bogus. I don’t believe any of that note. What mother would…either way. No.
We were just talking about that at dinner tonight.
100% Liz.
Thanks for all the recommendations! I put One Dark Window on hold at the library and I am listening to Paladin’s Grace on Hoopla. I have to say, the audiobook narrator is not my favorite- he should be on the Calm app - or maybe I am just tired. 😴 I have almost picked up The Hacienda - I have read Mexican Gothic. I am interested to hear what you think.🤔 😅 My TBR is filling up - keep ‘em coming!📚
Hey that's great. I know what you mean about the narrator, but I found that if you bump up the playback speed to about 1.40x, it reads better. And eventually you just get use to it. Glad you are enjoying the channel and videos. We will keep them coming.
Love the Body and totally agree on Verity. An exhausting read!
Great channel, keep at it!
The Road still haunts me after 18 years…
I think it will stay with me for a while as well.
Fun podcast. I’m a knitter and book lover as well.
Thank you Maryanne! So good to have you here. ❤️
Hey guys, what a fun concept of reading together. Do you alternate chapters? Do you read with voices of the characters? I want to try this out with my husband and wondering how to start. He reads a lot of nonfiction, science, and political stuff. Clearly, we have to come up with a murder mystery I think... I used to read aloud novels to my daughter when she was small, and I think that really cultivated her love of reading. I actually follow Taylor on her knitting/ fibre podcast… I find is the perfect one to knit to in the morning. Thanks guys have a great rest of the week!
Hi Samantha! Thank you so much for watching and for coming over from WNH. That means a lot.
So when we first started reading together, we’d take turns with chapters. And I think in a lot of ways, this is a good idea. Especially if you’ll be bingeing a big part of the book and you don’t want to have one of you losing your voice at the end (😅). However we’ve started alternating nights. I’ll read one night and then Branden will read the next. This way the reader can sort of settle into it. We haven’t done a whole lot to differentiate the voices other than inflection and I think that’s because the last two books didn’t really need it. But if we had a story with far more characters sharing “screen time” than I’m sure we would. When we read to the boys, we’re both very animated so all bets are off. 😂
I hope you like Agatha Christie. I learned English with her books when I first came to America. Check out the podcast "shedunit".
I'm sure we will. And we will certainly check out the podcast. Thank you for the recommendation.
I gave Verity 3 ⭐️s because of that ending. I’ve tried reading two other Hoover books, but dnf’ed them. I enjoyed The Hacienda, but loved Mexican Gothic.
Ooo interesting about Colleen Hoover. I keep hearing very used reviews about her. I feel like the writing and overall concept of Verity doesn’t have me wanting to read much else by her and 3 stars for that ending is spot on. That final ending with the ✉️ was…dare I say…juvenile.
And I’m glad you mentioned that about both Mexican Gothic and Hacienda. I’m curious which you would recommend to read first between the two? Thank you Kris!
I loved Thursday Murder Club! I work in an assisted living/retirement community and could see some of our retirees in these characters. Hopefully there won't be any murders to solve for them though. lol. All I have to say about Verity is UGH! DNF.
😂 Thats awesome.
i enjoyed the road.dark but good.
Yeah me too. Will certainly look to read more of his books.
Verity was an interesting read for sure. The ending was certainly unexpected! It was my first time reading Colleen Hoover and I wasn't quite sure what to think about her books. I have since read several others and have enjoyed them. She does cover some serious topics however.
enjoy u both so much!!!!!😊
Thank you! ❤️
Unrelated, but holla from a fellow disc golf wife ✌️
😂🥏
Love this
Thanks!
Favorite Stephen King- the dead zone
Perfect. 👍😁
Relationship goals! :). How do you two find / make time to read so much?
It's just that simple. Make the time. Also, we both decided to not scroll endlessly trying to find something to watch.
@@GoodBooksLately I going to start practicing reading while knitting! I know audio books are good for that but they just aren’t the same to me. Thanks for sharing your reads with us and I’m happy to see you started a second channel and got the hubby involved.
Tayler here! I think being able to read and knit really helps me a lot. I don’t always, but it’s nice knowing I can do both. Try that Bookseat I’ve mentioned on the podcast. 😘
@@daram5257 same! I find my mind always wandering while listening to audiobooks and afterwards I only know half the story. Audio dramas sometimes work for me but they are mostly heavily abridged, so yeah... Found knitting and reading works great for me with my e-reader or tablet as long as I'm only working in stockinette stitch. 😅
@@astudyinpanic Yes! I'm going to start practicing with my tablet and I love the Bookseat product Tayler mentioned.
I’m probably old enough to be your mom and I read Verity 😅
Verity - I did throw it across the room! I think it is the most implausible, ridiculous thing I have ever read. Yuck. Double get out of here!
I mean, I don’t disagree. I feel like, in retrospect, it was very much a shock value read. 😒
@@GoodBooksLately Agreed. It was so funny because I was on a flight from Grand Rapids to Newark and there were 2 women reading it on the flight and they started talking about how great it was. I had a stopover and then was flying to Tampa, so I bought the book and I was literally on the last chapter when I got to the hotel. Then there was the book toss. I will say it accomplished one thing. I was going to my friend’s funeral, and it did take my mind off things a bit. I travel a lot and knit a lot, but I always have one audible, one actual book ( fiction) and another on my phone to read. Just started Anna O by Matthew Blake. I’ll let you know how that goes.
Not a Colleen Hoover fan here.
All Colleen Hoover books will be 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️. To much for me as well. If you are getting into fantasy…Fourth Wing is very good but there is some graphic 🌶️. I typically skip those pages or fast forward the audio. Doing so does not take anything away from the story. Iron Flame is the sequel…also very good. ACOTAR is excellent. Especially the second book A Court of Mist and Fury. Fantasy at its finest. Don’t waist your time on How to End A Love Story. Horrible and I don’t say that often. Way way way to much ugly🌶️‼️
Tayler mentioned checking out her Goodreads review - what is your account name on Goodreads?
Ah yes! I need to get those links in our descriptions. Thank you Kersten. In the meantime, Tayler's Goodreads: www.goodreads.com/user/show/56137016-tayler-earl
Thank you!
