    I grew up reading Agatha Christie. My dad and I would get her books from the library, sit on the couch drinking tea, and reading. Great memories!
    My dad was so excited when he hit 80 last year. It's been long enough that he's forgotten most of the endings and can reread all her books. 😅😊

    If you like Stephen King, I would recommend The Shining. The movie not only barely scratches the surface of the story, it omits important story elements (like just about the entire backstory that gets them to the Overlook) and it completely changes the ending. The book is outstanding IMO.

    The book I recommend to everyone is From The Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz. Most Dean Koontz books I would describe as “Stephen King lite”. This book I describe as literature that will open your mind to new ideas and realities. Every time I run across a copy at a book sale I buy it because I keep giving copies away.

    How am I just seeing you have a book vlog too. Knitting and reading are my favorites! (I recommended Storygraph to you on your knitting channel). I love learning about new books. I finished How to Solve Your Own Murder. It was a fun little book, along the Thursday Murder Club lines from my understanding. I’m currently reading Tress of the Emerald Sea and it may be my favorite ready of the year (20 books so far). A fun cozy-ish fantasy. Now I have to go catch up on the previous episodes. Loved it, keep it up!

    If youre liking T Kingfisher, A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking is hilarious, cozy fantasy with a great magical system. The main character's magical power is to control dough. Like she has a familiar that is a sentient sour dough starter. It's great.

    Really enjoying you two chatting about books! Here’s another recommendation for a completely different read. Jean Shepherd wrote some hilarious stories about him growing up during the depression in Indiana. Yup, the movie A Christmas Story is his stories. In Fact, he does the voice over in the movie! While I love the movie, his written stories are even better!
    In God We Trust, AllOthers Pay Cash and Wanda Hickeys Night of Golden Memories And Other Disasters are my two favorites. Bet you can find them in a thrift store!

    I have enjoyed everything I have read by T. Kingfisher. You'd probably like "Nettle and Bone", which has a dark, gothic fantasy feel. Its a novella and could be read in one sitting. If you want something hilarious and more light hearted by her, then I would suggest "A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking". In the vein of dark, spooky fantasy, then Erin A. Craig also has some books for you. I'm particularly thinking of "A House of Salt and Sorrow" and "House of Roots and Ruin". Happy reading!

    The Talisman is a wonderful stand alone Stephen king book that crosses into fantasy. Absolute best is the Gunslinger series. First book is really only an intro but has the best first line ever…”The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” That series you cry, laugh, and the characters become your good friends. Combo of futuristic and old west. Absolute must! My husband doesn’t like horror books but I convinced him to read it and he loved it and was just as emotionally invested.

    Stephen King is so underated by the literary world. "The Stand" is a masterpiece. "The Long Walk" is so good and a lesser known work. When I read it.. I thought it was new and was shocked it was kinda similar to "The Hunger Games" and then I realized it was written way before "The Hunger Games"! So good. 11/22/63 also a great read. I read everything but a lot books in the literature category than popular fiction... but Stephen King just writes people so well.

    Hey guys, what a fun concept of reading together. Do you alternate chapters? Do you read with voices of the characters? I want to try this out with my husband and wondering how to start. He reads a lot of nonfiction, science, and political stuff. Clearly, we have to come up with a murder mystery I think... I used to read aloud novels to my daughter when she was small, and I think that really cultivated her love of reading. I actually follow Taylor on her knitting/ fibre podcast… I find is the perfect one to knit to in the morning. Thanks guys have a great rest of the week!

    • @GoodBooksLately
      @GoodBooksLately  Місяць тому

      Hi Samantha! Thank you so much for watching and for coming over from WNH. That means a lot.
      So when we first started reading together, we’d take turns with chapters. And I think in a lot of ways, this is a good idea. Especially if you’ll be bingeing a big part of the book and you don’t want to have one of you losing your voice at the end (😅). However we’ve started alternating nights. I’ll read one night and then Branden will read the next. This way the reader can sort of settle into it. We haven’t done a whole lot to differentiate the voices other than inflection and I think that’s because the last two books didn’t really need it. But if we had a story with far more characters sharing “screen time” than I’m sure we would. When we read to the boys, we’re both very animated so all bets are off. 😂

      Ooo interesting about Colleen Hoover. I keep hearing very used reviews about her. I feel like the writing and overall concept of Verity doesn’t have me wanting to read much else by her and 3 stars for that ending is spot on. That final ending with the ✉️ was…dare I say…juvenile.

      @@GoodBooksLately Agreed. It was so funny because I was on a flight from Grand Rapids to Newark and there were 2 women reading it on the flight and they started talking about how great it was. I had a stopover and then was flying to Tampa, so I bought the book and I was literally on the last chapter when I got to the hotel. Then there was the book toss. I will say it accomplished one thing. I was going to my friend’s funeral, and it did take my mind off things a bit. I travel a lot and knit a lot, but I always have one audible, one actual book ( fiction) and another on my phone to read. Just started Anna O by Matthew Blake. I’ll let you know how that goes.

I typically skip those pages or fast forward the audio. Doing so does not take anything away from the story. Iron Flame is the sequel…also very good. ACOTAR is excellent. Especially the second book A Court of Mist and Fury. Fantasy at its finest. Don’t waist your time on How to End A Love Story. Horrible and I don’t say that often. Way way way to much ugly🌶️‼️
