  • Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) took three years to compose his penultimate mass and his first work regarded as a "late mass." Both of these titles belong to the masterpiece of Schubert's 5th mass. It is commonly known that Schubert died at the height of his powers at 31 years old. The compositions of his later years are noticeably more profound, more inventive, less restricted, and more harmonically advanced. If he had lived to be as old as Verdi, I have no doubt that Schubert's masses would be regularly performed today.
MASS NO. 5 in A-flat, D. 678 - Missa Solemnis in 6 parts for four soloists, choir, and orchestra (Kyrie 0:00, Gloria 6:45, Credo 21:03, Sanctus 32:40, Benedictus 35:54, Agnus Dei 40:21)

    Helen Donath (soprano)
    Brigitte Fassbaender (mezzo)
    Francisco Araiza (tenor)
    Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (baritone)
