I can't say whether this is the best thing they've ever written (as 'Slug' and 'Your Blue Room' from their Passengers album are amazing creations), but I can say it's my favourite song of theirs, and had a profound impact on me, when I first heard it as an 11 year old boy. Just magic, so ethereal and utterly beguiling.
I've just been singing this to a same key instrumental on UA-cam. It's quite difficult to hit the high notes. Respect to bono considering his voice will have changed considerably since the eighties when it was released.

Check out Psalm 45 verse 3; "Therefore we will not fear, when the earth shall be troubled; and the mountains shall be removed into the heart of the sea." That would be Psalm 46 according to the newer numbering system.

Out of any song of theirs that has unfortunately had to be scrapped(or perhaps transposed down) due to Bono’s unfortunate vocal issues, this is the one that breaks my heart the most. This song is such a masterpiece in so many ways. So it’s a shame they can’t play it very much anymore.
Bono's "unfortunate vocal issues" is in layman terms called getting older. He was in his early to mid 20s when he first performed that song. Probably at least late 40s here? Father time catches up to us eventually.

Because of all that, he ruptured polyps on his vocal cords. It was completely avoidable. It was around the time they begin to transpose their songs and he had to change his singing style to preserve his voice.. So it wasn’t just about getting older.
Love the song, I don't think I've really ever heard him sing this song well live though. I'm no vocalist, but I imagine it's a hard one to hit those high notes at any age.
