I worked for NASA at Johnson Space Center and I was visiting friends in Toronto in 1983. While they were at work I explored. I ended up in a huge park next to Toronto. It was mid day and I was the only one there. It was a beautiful day, blue skies and just a bit warm. Then people slowly began to show up. Many of them had cameras and setting them up on tripods. Within 30 minutes thousands of people were there all looking at the sky. At that point I stood up and asked a woman what was happening. Just as she was answering the Space Shuttle Enterprise appeared in the sky flying piggyback on a Boeing 747. It was the first time the shuttle flew over a foreign country (except for a few hundred miles up in space). This flight was for Canada’s contribution for designing the shuttle’s robotic arm. One of my first assignments at NASA was to help build the robotic arm simulator in building 9 at Johnson Space Center. I worked with a computer guru, Luigi Schiavo, and an electronics expert, Jim Gimble. After the robotic arm simulator was built six different grappling fixtures were tested to determine the one that would operate best in zero gravity. We practiced lifting helium filled simulated payloads with the robotic arm and putting them into the shuttle payload bay. The Canadian robotic arm was mounted on a full scale mock-up of the Space Shuttle. Every once in awhile a ‘simulated payload’ broke free from a grappling fixture and floated to the top of the building. They didn’t move very fast because prior to any training session weights were placed in pockets all around the simulated payloads to try to keep them neutral so it more represented the conditions in space. I still have a lot of photographs I took that day in Toronto. I am a photographer so I always had my camera with me. It really came in handy on that incredible day. I laughingly thought, I came all this way and my work followed me.
The Orion and SpaceX vehicles are cool and all, but nothing can really compare to the Space Shuttle and the way it majestically glides back down to earth. An amazing feat of engineering
It was breathtakingly beautiful. Was there and thought they were landing and someone said:'he's coming back up', which I didn't believe, but she saw that the 747 didn't have the landing gear down. They fooled us all....we were lucky to see this twice. I saw it 2 times before and different locations as I was heading toward airport. It was amazing and I was very very lucky to have seen it four time. Thank you NASA, Pilots and everyone who was involved in planning this.Bless you all!
It makes me so proud how aviation and aerospace has progressed. This was a day America will never forget. And I agree with you; I AM proud to be an American :)
You were blessed to even see one! I still haven't even been able to go see one in a museum. I want to so bad. That must have really been awesome to behold a launch!
DrMontyProductions yep, that HAS to be an American pilot. Any other pilot would have flown it into a building or have gotten lost at sea, or crashed into a mountain side
Pilot: 196 Billion Dollar Payload, 196 Billion Dollar Payload, 196 Billion Dollar Payload, 196 Billion Dollar Payload.... and we have touch down, perfect landing, holy fuck i get to keep my job yesss!!
The funny thing is the 747-400 can actually carry more load (maximum takeoff weight- empty weight here) (228.175 kg) than the Shuttle Carrier (187.800kg... btw: empty weight of the orbiter is 78.000 kg) and the 747-400 has stronger engines (282kN per engine compared to 222kN)
At my aunt and uncles house in Mississippi the flight path of the 747 piggy backing the shuttle went right over their house. So if we knew when it would be flying over we would go outside and watch it. It was really cool to see that when I was a kid.
naturally (and rightly so) you had / deserved the front row seats!!!! couldn't feel prouder that you got such an excellent video of this!! 5 stars & two thumbs up! you never disappoint.
Aviation LBA but the 777 also runs on the Pratt & Whitney PW4000, or the Rolls Royce Trent 800, so the 777 doesn’t always *HAVE* the GE90s, hence why I commented.
this should be the first thing that pops up when you search endeavor. I saw that thing yesterday. its purdy bad ass. had a dehydrated ice cream sandwich. it was good.
My guess, mostly for observation: make sure the 747 and Shuttle's integrity isn't compromised (object strikes, loose parts) and worst case scenario... keeping guard so a lunatic doesn't attempt a terrorism act and slam into it...
I dont know about the structure of the plane... I am very courious... is it a heavy modified about the 747... Especially the Rudder... Afaik... The rudder is very important...

This must be from the days when baggage was not so strictly controlled so someone just brought a plane on board of a plane.
Lmao
This comment deserves way more up votes.

What I want to know is, why do airlines charge us for excess baggage when their planes can actually carry a space shuttle?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
1:11 if you think of all the engineering behind this, this is just incredible. Wow
this guy flew over my elementary school back then, good times
Same here
you are saying a 747 with a space shuttle on top or without flew over your school. with or without a space shuttle?
@Manuel Leyva At the time I was in Russel Elementary School
Same
Same here!
He really buttered that landing. Amazing video. Thank you
The Orion and SpaceX vehicles are cool and all, but nothing can really compare to the Space Shuttle and the way it majestically glides back down to earth. An amazing feat of engineering
That landing is absolutely perfect.
I love how the 747 can still get lift from the shuttle! So it doesn't just act as a passenger.
Still a better love story than twilight

My utmost respect to these pilots, and of course everyone involved!
I remember that thing in the United hanger ! Was very cool to walk around it
Mad respect for the pilots first of all for flying such a big plane and then having a shuttle on top
I remember the whole thing happening through the holes in the fence at school in 3rd grade... Magical...
and they make us to pay for extra luggage :/
Heavier the plane is = More fuel used = More expensive
Remember! Not every plane can carry a space shuttle! +This is not an airliner, its NASA, they have the money duh!
Loooool!
Because airlines are in the business of making money, so they tack on fees for everything a passenger carries on.

Flew over my elementary school, that was cool :)
This is one of the nicest videos with a Boeing 747 and a Space-Shuttle that I have seen.
Excellent, just excellent. Sad to see Endeavor airborne for the last time, especially since it's the only shuttle I ever saw liftoff. Semper Fi.
You were blessed to even see one! I still haven't even been able to go see one in a museum. I want to so bad. That must have really been awesome to behold a launch!
Very nice; had a little "gulp" when I read "United States" along the side... proud to be an American! Great job on the vid!
really really really professional pilot...look at his landing....little smoke from tyres....very smooth landing !
Well imagine how pissed everyone would be if he crashed....
They probably got the best pilot in america for this XD
DrMontyProductions yep, that HAS to be an American pilot. Any other pilot would have flown it into a building or have gotten lost at sea, or crashed into a mountain side
***** wait and see, pretty soon ISIS is going to have their own international airport
Yep, it must be an American or Turkish pilot, most of the other pilots couldn't even start up the engines y'know.
thats the coolest thing i've ever seen.
Pilot: 196 Billion Dollar Payload, 196 Billion Dollar Payload, 196 Billion Dollar Payload, 196 Billion Dollar Payload.... and we have touch down, perfect landing, holy fuck i get to keep my job yesss!!
The pilot in that 747: don't fuck up, don't fuck up, don't fuck up....
The funny thing is the 747-400 can actually carry more load (maximum takeoff weight- empty weight here) (228.175 kg) than the Shuttle Carrier (187.800kg... btw: empty weight of the orbiter is 78.000 kg) and the 747-400 has stronger engines (282kN per engine compared to 222kN)
very smooth landing
Ammazzing 👏
One of the best airplane videos I've ever seen.
What an amazing catch this was, an incredible rare opportunity and really well captured!
At my aunt and uncles house in Mississippi the flight path of the 747 piggy backing the shuttle went right over their house. So if we knew when it would be flying over we would go outside and watch it. It was really cool to see that when I was a kid.
Best pilot I've ever seen #TrueStory
#iwasthatpilot what do you guys think? did i get it or nah?
Great work of aeronautics ... Can't picture the thrill of being in such a flight
zzztubazzz you're fake. I don't believe you exist
Excellent :-) A "BIG" thumbs up :-) Stay SAFE!!!!!!! ROCK ON!!!!!!!
naturally (and rightly so) you had / deserved the front row seats!!!! couldn't feel prouder that you got such an excellent video of this!!
5 stars & two thumbs up! you never disappoint.
Ohhhh dat P&W sound ♥
I was expecting an awesome video from you and I wasn't disappointed!
Grats on the vid, I'll never forget when the Shuttle Enterprise did a flyby over Montreal in the early 80's, it was awesome.
I couldnt and cant believe it its true airplane top of airplane space shuttle flying just amazing
Imagine Boeing 777 or Airbus A380 carrying the space shuttles.
Brummiewellington Boeing doesn’t make the ge90s... GENERAL ELECTRIC does
The 747 is much more beautiful and much more iconic than the bloated A380. The 777 is a beauty, but would struggle to handle a spacecraft.
SpottingFromSilverlake He never said that Boeing makes the GE90s, he’s just saying that the 777 *HAS* GE90s... which is correct.
Aviation LBA but the 777 also runs on the Pratt & Whitney PW4000, or the Rolls Royce Trent 800, so the 777 doesn’t always *HAVE* the GE90s, hence why I commented.
Yeah I know. But he probably didn’t think that Boeing *MAKES* the GE90s.
Yess!! I was hoping you would catch this and brilliantly captured,. Thank you
Those are T-38's, they always have served as escorts, not only for transporting the Shuttle but upon re-entry from missions as well.
Something tells me that this looks very badass
That is amazing! 👍✈️
this should be the first thing that pops up when you search endeavor. I saw that thing yesterday. its purdy bad ass. had a dehydrated ice cream sandwich. it was good.
Absolutely wonderful. The shuttle's wings also help to keep afloat.
Fantastique, je n'avais jamais vu, un telle avion 💖🥀
damm it , it stop in Houston on tuesday and a miss it, but glad you post it tnks
I wish i could go back in time to see this again
what a great capture fantastic to see this happening live.
Wow!What a sight!Most impressive!
Breathtaking

Not really. Just a plane landing.
SO happy SpeedBird was there! Thanks!!!
OMG........HOW ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND SAD AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!
Thanks. I was hoping you would be here for it!
Welcome
i hope our america will always be delta!! (and united too)
thanks for the vid man!
Wow, what an awesome capture. Thank you for sharing.
I've seen a different combination with a overfly 1983 in Paris.
This is what I LOVE!! Thank you for this! It's really neat!!
Im crying hehe its awesome
1:11 Sounding Like Boeing 767 & Airbus A310 But In 1993 Version
Me llevas en tu espalda 🚀🛫
One of the greatest machines we as Americans have ever made! Sad to see them go
Amazing Video.
Back when America was so much better … I was a Flight Attendant then a s I remember seeing this first hand
majestic
what a solid landing.
I WAS JUST WAITINGI FOR YOUR VIDEO! NICE JOB!
Crazy things do happen in Florida
Greatest America🇺🇸🇺🇲
Fantastic video!!! Your lucky you got to capture this. It's Absolutley amazing!
N905NA heavy - obviously!!
Wow ! Great .
wow super ye nahi dekha toh kuch nahi dekha.
as always, excellent video ... congratulations!
I guess that even the pilots of the Airforce One would be jealous on that pilot
wow space shuttle
2:18 Sounded Like Is Flying Boeing 727
Absolutely awesome video mate!
Perfect Airplane Land!!!!👍👍👍👍😍😍😍😍
Why do I have to pay extra when my baggage is over 5 IBs if this plane is allowed to carry a 260 thousand pound space shuttle?
so awesome!
I was flying it..thanks guyz
Beautiful!!! Awesome video!!! Best video I've seen of this event!
that was smooth
My guess, mostly for observation: make sure the 747 and Shuttle's integrity isn't compromised (object strikes, loose parts) and worst case scenario... keeping guard so a lunatic doesn't attempt a terrorism act and slam into it...
AWESOME!! great spot friend!!!
i remember this :)
Nice
Great view, I would be thrilled to see this one day!
The ones shown here are F-18's though. You're right about T-38's being used in general, but these ones are F-18's (or NASA's version of it).
I dont know about the structure of the plane... I am very courious... is it a heavy modified about the 747... Especially the Rudder...
Afaik... The rudder is very important...
For a spotter, this is the fishing equivalent of hooking Moby Dick.
past right over my house in bell everyone stopped from my school to see even those that dnt like airplanes
Spectacular video, congratulations. Saludos
I wonder what protocols they had in place if the shuttle fell off. Were the fighter jets authorized to shoot it before it hit the ground?
Demasiado bueno los vídeos.
The “it will fit in the stow away guy”
What sort of fighter jets were escorting them? F-16?
nice video!!
Great!
I wonder who the person was who thought of this. Crazy.
*When you tell the President that you cannot fly his Airforce One today, because you got offered to carry a space shuttle....*
