  • Gravel and Cyclocross bikes are extremely versatile machines, and tire choice helps with that. In this video I pull the 33c cyclocross race tires off my Giant TCX and put on a pair of 40c gravel tires. I'll tell you how the ride quality changes for both gravel roads and singletrack.

Totally agree with your comment about riding a gravel / CX bike on easy single track. It transforms the ride and makes an easy trail much more entertaining.

For a while my cyclocross bike was my only bike. I have 2 sets of wheels and 3 sets of tires (road slicks, cross tires and gravel tires). I am in New Hampshire, so our single track is different than yours and I went with a Maxxis Ravager in front, Rambler in back. The more aggressive Ravager helps in more rugged terrain and both tires are 40mm. I like how quick and responsive the cross bike is. Yes, at times I have to pick my way through roots and rocks, but it is fun. I do have a hardtail mtb now, but am thinking of going back to one, cyclocross, bike for everything. I am in a downsizing and simplifying mode and like the idea of one bike.

Great video, so glad you're sounding the horn on tire choice. I made a major geometry mistake in selecting a gravel bike instead of a cyclocross bike: the *toe overlap* on tight turns means I have to either "rarchet" through the corner or simply dismount. It's a wonderful bike, and I love it...hard lesson tho.

Can't wait to see more! CX bike taught me a lot that I've transferred to MTB. I settled for 35C Vittoria Mezcal CX version so I could have an advantage over XC hardtail on tarmac. Mainly because I could keep the same pressure for offroad and tarmac, because with 40C would be too draggy on road vs XC hardtail. It was so common to run into XC riders on my CX ride that is why I had that setup.

Hi Clint i ride a giant tcx advanced pro 2 from 2018, and my daily tires are Schwalbe smart sam plus 42,622 and they are fine on the rear and the front ! Keep on making good UA-cam videos

I have a Lynskey Pro-Cross that I use for gravel. Making the change to a 1X12 GRX setup. This bike allows up to 40c tires.

Great vid. I like one Geo for my all road riding-and use wheels/tires to fine-tune my bike handling. I have a bike about 80 trail and 425 chain-stay. I have 700c, 27.5, and a 26 wheels. I love to go 26 inch rear mullet gravel when I want more trail and a snappier real for climbing. I own lots of tires though. I’m 5”2’. I would recommend 700c/27.5 mullet if you are over 5”7’ and want an option with more trail.

I like fast gravel riding and racing. Recently, I tested 40 mm vs 45 tires, keeping all other parameters the same with Schwalbe G One RS tires (one of the best fast tires available). On my test loops, which are generally smooth maintained county roads (think "champagne"), and about 25% to 30% pavement, the 45 mm tires were faster than the 40s overall (at the same average power output), and they lost virtually no speed on the pavement sections (which surprised me, the difference was so small as to be hard to measure, using Strava segments). My takeaway is that I will never ride or race a 40 mm gravel tire again, even for the smoothest events, and for rough events, I will be making sure my next bike can take a 50 mm tire.

Thanks Clint! I love any sort of comparison content but specifically tire-related because it has such a profound effect on the feel/handling/speed of a bike! One thing I would be interested is if you made a video comparing speed of a XC tire vs a trail tire. Pinkbike has/had their efficiency test using the same control tires, but i often wonder if you took an all-mountain/enduro bike and slapped XC tires on it how much the "efficiency" and feel of speed would change. Or conversely what has the greatest effect on speed/efficiency of an XC/DC bike, weight, geo or tires?

That mud thing sounded a bit like riding in slushy snow. A narrow tire will cut throught the slush and work fine. A super wide tire will float above the slush and also work fine. A kind of wide tire like a 38 or a 40 mm wide will place you in hell, it will alternate between cutting through the stuff and floating above it and will be totally unpredictable.
Also, Gerhard Vroomen of 3T pointed out an interesting thing about cushioning: riding faster will give you a smoother ride, and let you get away with thinner, lower volume tires! If you're going fast you're going to fly straight over small potholes that you will fall into if you're going slower. So a road that will feel nice if you're fast can shake you to pieces if you're slow. Which means the slower you are, the wider the tires you need to be decently comfortable. Which of course means anyone riding gravel on 23mm tires is probably super fast. 😀

Love ramblers. Rolled a season on 38 and going next season for 40. They are so fast! Large surface of knobs, square shape and low profile makes it roll fast. Also a bigger distance between knobs leaves the tire clean unlike panaracers sk.. that become packed with dirt immediately and don't work on wet dirt/sand.
In between, while it's winter, riding Ravager. These are made for dirt only. On the gravel/hardpack and asphalt sections I literally feel resistance and need to push harder.

Would like to hear your thoughts sometime on mixed tire gravel setups. I’ve been considering this more and more about running a slicker tread in the back like the G One RS and a knobbier up front like the G One R.
It’d probably look a little funny but a cross bike with a 45 or so up front and a 38-40 in the back might be a really interesting setup for stability up front and speed in the back.

I switched the stock 33c tires on my 2020 tcx advanced to panaracer gravelking 43s.. changed the whole feel of the bike!

Have you ever thought, Clint, of trying a suspension seatpost and stem like the Redshift Shockstop ones? I bought the stem last year and found I could ride faster and more comfortably in rougher sections than with a standard one. At the end of the month I intend to buy the seatpost, to use on my CX bike.

Back in my early days of mountain biking where all I had was a hard tail, I always rode with a suspension seat post. After getting used to it I could not go back to a rigid post on a hard tail. Originally I used U.S.E., which I don’t think are made anymore, and then I started using a Cane Creek Thudbuster. Even though the Cane Creek added quite a bit of weight to the bike, I felt I could ride faster with it, for the reasons you mentioned. I have not tried one on a gravel bike.

Perfect timing for this video! Just got a set of 32c gravel tires, the max for my roubaix, and I'm anxious to try them out. I'm currently running 30c tires, and it's my favorite bike ever. It's looking like I'm going to have to add a gravel bike to my fleet!

Perhaps I missed it although how wide a rim are you running? I'm using 38C's on 19 width wheels, wondering if 40C's might be a stretch on these rims.

Cyclocross vs Gravel, waste of comparison. It should be "a bikes geometry" vs. "what do you ride most often".
If you cross race, get a cross bike. It works as a gravel bike just fine.
If you ride gravel, get a gravel bike, in a pinch, it can be raced cross.
I prefer the gravel bike, because of the more 'relaxed' geometry. Of course this is because my 'gravel rides' typically have a solid mix of pavement and gravel. Around 45% asphalt, 45% gravel, and 10% forest service roads. And I don't race cross. So a gravel bike allows me to ride in, relative, comfort all day long. (My bigger rides are 80+ miles with up to 10k climbing).
To be honest, a hardly ride my road bike anymore. It's just to fun to go on 'mixed' routes...
    -
    -
As for tire width, 38-40 is all you 'need' for this mix of riding. Plenty fast on pavement, just fine on gravel. If you ride off-road to the extend you find yourself wanting 50+ tires, get on your mtb hardtail...

Making my life more exciting by using more unfit technology is not a strategy I like. Less than 40 mm tires do not offer any advantage for me, but several disadvantages. No brainer. CX bikes suck on technical terrain because of toe overlap. I really hate that. In short: CX stuff maybe nice while doing CX. I don't do CX. Have fun!
