  • This interview question went in a slightly different direction: What does a job of a VFX Producer entail?
Co-Founders of Barnstorm VFX Cory Jamieson and Lawson Deming tackle the question. And one of the best answers they give is that a VFX Producer functions as a gatekeeper to the budget and the schedule. Which - and here’s the best part! - often turns out to be the same thing!
More about the studio: Barnstorm VFX is an Emmy-nominated studio behind the visual effects on Amazon Studios’ THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, HBO’S SILICON VALLEY and CBS’ STRANGE ANGEL. Barnstorm’s team embodies the pioneering ingenuity, daring creativity and freewheeling spirit of the first aviators.
Founded in 2011 with the original location in Los Angeles, Barnstorm VFX now has a second office in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Enjoy this insider info from two successful studio owners and effective leaders. We hope it answers your questions and / or inspires you to expand your leadership skills.

Here's one of the best answers to the question of "What does the job of a VFX Producer entail?" from Barnstorm VFX Co-Founders: A VFX Producer functions as a gatekeeper to the budget and the schedule. Which - and here’s the best part! - often turns out to be the same thing! I love that answer! What do you think though? Let me know, please. Leave a comment below!

Seems like it's its own profession in a lot of ways, yet from my experience it's the next level in terms of production from being an artist. Senior roles generally appear to have a producer element. Some producers become directors because the ability to manage very complex systems when coupled with artistic vision and capability are highly valued. That seems like the traditional way people advanced into those higher strata roles, where you're now more widely responsible for both the artistic vision of the piece and also it's successful delivery. Compared to an artist it's a more challenging role because the pressure now comes from above and below, as being the middleman you are responsible to both groups. Cheers for another great interview!

But that's what makes you more in demand! So many artists want to "just be artists". If you want longevity in this line of business, embracing your leadership skills is the way to go!
