Airplane black boxes, explained

Immediately following an airplane crash anywhere in US territory, the National Transportation Safety Board dispatches a team of investigators to survey the wreckage, gather information from the airline and from air traffic control, and retrieve the plane's so-called "black boxes."
These flight recorders - one stores cockpit audio recordings, the other stores airplane instrument data - are sent to NTSB's lab in Washington, DC, for analysis. There, officials listen to what are sometimes the pilots' final, panicked moments of life. They interpret not only what the pilots were saying before the crash but also any snaps, bangs, and alarms captured by the cockpit area microphone.
By combining those audio clues with data from the plane's instruments and sensors, as well as evidence from the scene, investigators can usually determine the cause of the crash, even in cases with no surviving witnesses.

Black box: because when you have to use it, it probably involved death.
yup and when a crash happens NTSB and NCIS are dispatched to the scene. Their goal find out why the plane crashed and recover all flight data to close the case. 900 crashes have been solved thanks to the Black Box.

Just imagine having your whole house shake, looking outside, and seeing that you were feet from dying.
Theres interviews from people that went through this, including people who's houses were perfectly intact, the plane having skidded to a halt inches away.
Why not do both? Have the planes transmit data to a satellite and keep a flight recorder onboard in case the plane ceases transmitting data to the satellite. That way the onboard flight recorder continues recording data after data transmission has ceased.
**Italian music plays**
Small girl: Why can't we have both?
Keeping expenses low as usual.
GENIUS
idk if you realize how many flights there are per day, it's barely worth it to be partaking in this degree of transmission (that anyone technical could tap into and potentially mess with) because of the couple plan crashes that happen every year.. they can usually find the black boxes and it's likely better to invest in the technology to make them more easily locatable in the worst case scenario
@@matamorosa Alright armchair engineer, anyone on the planet can live stream VIDEO from their phone, you make it seem like this is some alien technology when we're talking about mb's of data. There's plenty of communications with guidance satellites as it is, and that's using a lot more data than streaming a few hours of audio and swiggly lines.
In engineering a black box is not something with a lot of inputs. It means a device where you know the inputs and outputs but don't know how the inside works.
Not ordinary death thou.
Either don't know or don't care so you don't need to consider the inner components.
Great insight! Btw why do they limit the signal strength so it only makes it through 14000 ft of water? Isn't it possible to make something which gives out a stronger signal which goes hundreds of km?
A powerful beacon would most certainly risk another aspect of the box’s survivability.
Radio waves have a harder time traveling through water than air. Yes it would but it would require an incredibly powerful transmitter. Oh and its a battery and you need to cram something incredibly powerful into the size of a brick.

Outside the aviation industry, a black box usually means "a unit in which an unknown process takes place". With black boxes, you only know what you put in and what came out, not what happened in there. It's often used in software and sometimes in engineering.
It's exactly this. Wikipedia: "A black box is a device, object, or system whose inner workings are unknown; only the "stimuli inputs" and "output reactions" are known characteristics." In this case, maybe becaus you can't look into it without destroying it.
So Schrodinger's cat was in a black litter box? lol
The term is used inside the aviation industry too. I wouldn't expect the suits at the top to necessarily know this though as it is a slang term.

4:45 "black box" in engineering and science refers to a subsystem whose internal components are either unknown or irrelevant to the current application. Only the subsystem's behavior (i.e. its input/output response) is considered.
That's why it's called a "black box", you don't have knowledge of the inside of the box, only the inputs and outputs.
Invented in my home town of Melbourne, Australia. In fact I worked at the same site where it was invented. One of those little ideas that has saved literally thousands of lives.

The cockpit voice recorder was invented in Australia!
Also if the data is streamed in realtime, AI servers can detect if the pilot has done something unusual (like setting one of the engines to idle in case of a possible engine failure) and report it back to someone below and communicate to the pilots when a pan / mayday or critical flights are detected. That can solve probably most of human caused crashes.

Blackbox, that I learned at a technology university in the Netherlands, means that it is dark black that you don't know what processes are happening inside the box to process inputs and to give outputs. You give inputs to the blackbox and you get outputs coming out from the box. Now since it is black or a box that contains a mystery or unknown processes you need to find out what's happening inside the box that can explain the relationships between the inputs and the outputs. In reality, the box colour is orange because it needs to be easy to find after an accident.
This incident is what made me scared of planes my whole life. Every time I hear a plane overhead I get scared that it's going to crash into me and that nowhere is safe
Pretty sure it's far far more likely to be run over by a car than hit by a plane... and even that is rather unlikely
@@tpgslmth4252 yeah its irrational ik
I was in high school in 2001 and that was a very scary time when it came to planes. Aaliyah the singer had just died in a plane crash Aug 2001, then 9/11, then this incident. I was terrified of planes. Only reason I ended up taking my first flight years later was I was forced to for work.
This reminds me of that line by Chris Rock in "Down To Earth"
"How come every time an airplane crash,
all they can ever find is the black box?
Why don't they just make the whole plane out of the black box?"

I still don't understand how they don't have GPS tracking, just to know where the place was last found... I mean, this way they're not off by 500km!
obviously you don't know what your talking about, let me explain. A GPS, by definition is used to position the plane by triangulate the position using satellites. This requires a transponder in the aircraft, which by the way exists. This means when the plane crashes the GPS stops working. Before you say it, no the tower can not always see the plane. There is a lot of airspace that is only towered by center or radar services.
They do. They go with ELT, sending fixed radio signals when submerged in water or under strong impact, signal toe be received by IMARSAT.

What's really cool is that for MH17, they were able to use the different locations of the 4 cockpit mics to triangulate the location of detonation of the missile relative to the cockpit. Essentially, the sound waves would hit each mic at a measurable different time.
3:31 that second sound with the impact of the wind at the nose was actually used in another Vox video when they made that Biomimicry video, the part where the air pressure was at its highest at the end of the tunnel and creates a loud bang when the train exits the tunnel and the air pressure is let out
What this reminds me of xD - Stan Walker - Black Box
Make the boxes float so they are easier to find.
YOU'RE A GENIUS!! (major sarcasm)
To do that, the material the black box is made out of would have to be very light as well as very durable, and steel and titanium aren't exactly buoyant. There are very few light and strong materials out there able to withstand extreme force and heat, and even if such a material exists, it probably wouldn't be cost-effective to put one on every plane everywhere. And there's still the matter of the computer components storing information. We don't yet have the technology to make those lightweight yet.
Boats are made out of steal and float. Make a heavy titanium outer layer and fill the inside with air. (or polystyrene so a leak doesn't sink it.)
You're still not considering the fact that these things are INSIDE the plane, not on the outer shell ready to be detached once they're in the water. When a plane crashes, there are usually large chunks of plane instead of a million tiny pieces. These planes are stable, not made of glass. The box couldn't just magically float out of rubble, it has to be attached well.
Donald Hobson If you make it that big it would lose structural intregrity.
In military aviation line replaceable units (encased separate items) that contain control electronics (usually computers) are collectively called "black boxes". I believe this is because it is frequently a mystery to those who - when something breaks - replace them as to how exactly they work. In sum they are boxes that contain mysteries, termed "black", think "blacksite" or "black budget". Until recently the boxes were almost always painted black too (except for the flight data and voice recorders).
this is my favourite video so far!
i'm no expert. but logically i think in the past the "black box" was originally colored black. But they had to change the color to a much more highlighted/vibrant color to ease the search for the so called black box in the rubble. Just a thought. :p
You're right, you aren't an expert.

Daamn just found this channel, freaking awesome, and the editing is so cool!
A minor correction in that when a plan turns, the pilot makes use of both the rudder which controls the yaw (side to side movement of the plan) and the ailerons which control the roll of the aircraft (bank left or right). A coordinated turn is one where the correct amount of both rudder (by the pedals) and aileron (by the control column) input is imputed whereas an uncoordinated turn would be one where an excessive amount of either rudder or stick input is applied. Your video implied that rudder is hardly used, it is definitely used in order to maintain coordinated flight. Otherwise, great video and awesome graphics!

But you can fly a plane w/o a vertical stabalizer, it's just facking hard
It's impossible once you depart from the envelope of controlled flight.. Practically speaking it isn't possible
Evan Johnson well JAL flight 123 managed to control the aircraft for over half an hour without the rear stabilizers
Watching videos like these always make me nervous for no appearant reason..
The term black box is used to describe a component or machine that you use where you don't know how it works, but knows what it's doing... you can call a transistor a black box because you don't know how it's made, but knows what it does and what it's used for...
Maybe they can start generating electricity from the saltwater, powering the FDR and the CVR's beacon indefinitely.
That's incredibly dumb. That adds weight and cost. Airplanes need to stay as light as possible and adding a way to make power isn't necessary except in very rare instances.
That_llama_in_a_tuxedo Well, when a very rare instance happens and 400 families are left waiting for years, don't you think you'd want to give yourself a better chance at locating the wreck?
You wouldn't be able to generate it indefinitely, as you would need two types of metal for the anode and the cathode. One of these would almost certainly corrode. But it would generate power for a certain amount of time, which may help in some cases.
Billy Leask Would it be enough though? And also how can we be sure that this would survive the crash and not expose vital parts?

Wake turbulence.
Well, pilot error due to improper training by American Airlines which took place due to wake turbulence.
PilotStudios Channel oh wasnt it something to do with the rudder design as well? There was meant to be a limiter for the rudder angle in flight or something?
here's the full NTSB report www.ntsb.gov/investigations/AccidentReports/Reports/AAR0404.pdf They address the design issue -- not a deficiency or flaw exactly, but a mismatch between the sensitivity of the rudder system and the training pilots received about that system.
SENPAI NOTICED ME! - Thanks for the link haha
ive flown remote control and real planes, and his use of the rudder was astonishingly bad, especially as the rudder is almost exclusively used for landing only on commercial planes.
When Black Boxes are installed in an airplane (the FDR and CVR) is there a physical exterior door in which they can be accessed? As if they slide out on a tray?
The modern Black Boxes were invented by David Warren. He came up with the idea shortly after investigating the Commet crash of 1953. Without this brilliant man’s ingenuity many aviation accidents would have gone unsolved. Because of his invention many tragedies involving commercial aviation have been solved and have drastically made air travel one of the safest forms of transportation in the world. We owe a great debt to this man for his work. ❤️

i read somewhere on quora last time that costs of transmitting the massive amount of data are really high. But given the costs required to search and recover the box, i dont know why this is still a thing.
You probably wouldn’t get a secure signal so high up in the air.
I know it as a MPFR [Multi Purpose Flight Recorder], I hate when there is water leak in its compartiment and the underwater beacon is triggered, always a problem.
Didn't get the last debate on the phase "Black box". It's a very common term in UK engineering - used since at least 1902, long before the Wright brothers flight.

To expand on the last remark by the Sarah McComb, in engineering, a black box is a term used to describe a device that has any number of inputs and any number of outputs, but whose function within need not be known or understood by the end user. In other words, for most people, a phone is just something you speak into, and that you listen out of. However, most don't know the specific technologies within the phone itself that allow this input and output communication to occur, and in most cases, they don't need to know either. All that matters to the end users is that the phone can take their voice, transmit it to their friend on the other side, and output their friend's voice on their end. This is the concept of the black box, where you know what goes in and comes out, but not what goes on inside the device.
