Emma Stone Interview: There Was Zero Embarrassment on the Poor Things Set

  • You want an example of an actor who’s taking the reins of her career with great authority, racking up audacious roles, working with some of the strongest voices in the industry and supporting them as a producer as well? Look no further than Emma Stone.
Stone swings big frequently, but Poor Things’ Bella Baxter might be one of her most ambitious roles yet. Based on the Alasdair Gray novel, the Yorgos Lanthimos films follows Stone’s Bella as she’s resurrected by Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), given the brain of a child, and exposed to all of life’s wonders - and prejudices. Stone is challenged to create a character and take her on a super-speed coming-of-age journey, one during which Bella explores the world with limitless curiosity and enthusiasm as she's free of societal expectations and pressures.
With Poor Things now playing in theaters, I got the opportunity to have a brief chat with Stone during which she revisited the film’s very silly and freeing rehearsal process, discussed why she found much of Bella on the day on set, and also spoke about a particular acting pressure that she refuses to abide by. Hear it all straight from Stone in this Poor Things interview!

Just saw it. One of the boldest, strangest performances by an A-lister I've ever seen. Can't believe that quirky redhead from Easy A is now an Oscar-caliber performer.
Edit: checked IMDB and saw multiple existing nominations + one win. Now I feel dumb.

Sorry, but it's basically an x-rated adult movie under the label of "high art." The actress, director and producer should be ashamed, but today's culture is "post-shame." Skip this trash.

While I agree the love making scenes were a bit much (as in they could have shorten that phase of her realization a bit), it was also part of her character learning about life, feelings, and that includes pleasure. The movie was pretty well made in all aspects, and I found the dialogues and growth of the characters very interesting. If you try to put aside the shock from the graphic scenes, you might be enjoying it a bit more.

I agree with you. I used to see Emma Stone as cute and wholesome as well as a very talented actress. I cannot believe she took this role. Her next performance was Kinds of Kindness in which she participates in an interracial orgy. She is married and has a child. Why is she doing this now???

@@Josh-fp2qnyou do realize that it’s not real sex right?? It’s fascinating to me how Violence can be so freely depicted in media but as soon as someone has fake sex on camera now all of a sudden they’re “ruined”. Why don’t people have this same energy towards Mark Ruffalo who also participated in those sex scenes or male actors on general?

Emma Stone, not her best work ! Willem Dafoe, not his best work ! I give the movie a 3 out of ten just because they are both in the movie but did not care for it. I consider it a waste of 2.4 hours ! IMHO

I know he's not in it for very long but I wonder if Christopher Abbott was part of this rehearsal process they talk about all the time. I honestly hope he wasn't as it would aid the on set chemistry like how Matt Damon didn't have to go to the mandatory boot camp in Saving Private Ryan.

I hope that someday when there are clips of just that part of the movie being passed around and possibly by kids tormenting our kids about Mommy showing that women's sexual agency is about raunchy, horny and shameless as opposed to caring and love. I was a teenager and young adult during the sexual revolution and it seems sex was just something you did with anybody and everybody and meant nothing. My favorite bedroom scene of all time, I have recently found and to me it is sweet, caring and funny and Jacob and Hannah are obviously in love and it is romantic falling asleep without insisting on sex. I have difficulty watching it now with thinking of cucumbers or apples.

I'm also a Boomer. Not everyone slept around. For some of us it meant being true to our real selves and that just meant not waiting until marriage; also, having male friends without all the bs of ownership.

People in their 20s have always been banging each other, whether openly or in secret, regardless of what made-up “generation” they are in based on what year/decade they were born. Young people are gonna smash…that’s just how things go.

Easy A was a cheesy, obnoxious teen movie that peddled the typical teen girl fantasy.
“Oh yeah that was definitely me in high school, I was also super hot but boys didn’t like me because they were intimidated by my intelligence and wit!”
Okay, Am I seriously supposed to believe that EMMA STONE was unpopular in high school???
She’s by far the best looking female character in the film and even her hair was perfect in every scene. Literally any boy that age would be all over that, regardless of how “quirky” or nerdy she was.
In the House Bunny(which wasn’t a very good movie) they actually did an exceptional job of making her look nerdy and having her dress bland and conservatively.
That film has zero value beyond nostalgia which is the lowest form of value a piece of media can possess when even Caillou is capable of arousing it.
