We can only say that now because we have experienced the alternative of Eden, a fallen world with the capacity for evil. I wonder how each of us would respond to Eve's temptation. On the contrary! God is almighty and in control of all His creation. It was His intent, His very will, to subject mankind to a physical existence with a carnal mind that is at enmity (opposed) to God(Rom 8:7-9), by its very nature. He subjected us to this existence(Rom 8:20-23) with free will and the hope that once called and impregnated with His Holy Spirit we would choose to reject our carnal mind in favor of His mind, the mind that was fully in His Son, the Messiah, the Christ. He never sinned, but we do sin, requiring us to repent of our sin on an ongoing basis. We were made precisely to experience and live sin so that we can come to understand and value the mind of God and desire that mind to be in us, to transform us. If God did not desire us to know evil, He would certainly be an impotent God, because He utterly failed in that objective. Thus, since God most definitely is not impotent, but all powerful and the source of all knowledge and understanding, this was never His intent. Satan is the adversary of God, and we have been created subject to his mind, not God's, as temporary, physical beings that can choose to do good or to do evil. With a calling from God, human beings are given a choice, as God reveals Himself and His plan to an individual. We all have freedom to accept or reject that calling. A successful calling that leads to life requires ongoing repentance throughout one's life once called, faithfully living God's will in obedience to Him in all things. Choosing disobedience leads only to death from which there is no resurrection. God sets before us the freedom to choose, between everlasting life and everlasting death. His desire is that we choose life, but He will not force His will on anyone. Each one of us will receive the reward that we choose. (Deut 30:19)
This is my own personal interpretation of the fruit. I believe that yes God didn't want us to know about evil but it's also deeper than that. If it was simply God trying to protect us from evil why would he even create the tree or even better why create evil at all? To me, God set this up for more than one reason. The first is obviously God showing us that we have free will. He gave them the choice to obey him or to ignore him. Most of creation didn't get that choice. Another reason is that he created a world, universe, dimension or whatever you want to call it, where their are certain "rules/laws" that govern this place. One of which is Newton's 3rd law of motion. Which simply states "that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.". The interesting thing here is that the law exists both physically and spiritually. Hell is not a punishment, it's simply a consequence of our own actions.

Irenaeus (A leader of the Early Church shortly after the time of Jesus) had a great response to this question: He described that Adam and Eve were in training so they could grow into perfection and Christ-likeness, from naive children into fully understanding and mature, immortal beings. Gods command to not eat of the Tree of the knowledge of good an evil was a command that allowed them free will, the option to either choose God or walk away (a necessity for love). What Irenaeus points out to great effect was that God was not withholding knowledge, He very well intended to gradually grow Adam and Eve into a perfect knowledge that would encompass the knowledge or good and evil and SO MUCH MORE. Adam and Eve’s primary sin wasn’t trying to grasp at a knowledge that God was withholding but it was rather trying to take this knowledge by self-will according to their timing rather than trusting God and His timing of when knowledge would be revealed. This is reflected in the Bible and in many of the Early Church Fathers, the original, and still the greatest, sin is the sin of self-will as opposed to trusting God and His timing. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians that in Christ “ALL things are ours” and in Romans he writes that if the Father did not spare His own son Jesus but gave Him up to cover our sins how much more will He not FREELY give to us all things.” Still one of the most profound and believed lies in the world today is that God is a withholding God, but we must KNOW that what Paul says is true, He FREELY gives to us ALL THINGS, but it’s according to His will and timeline NOT ours
Show me in the Bible where your statement is true or implied to be true? There is NO such statement by God implying a "training" period for Adam and Eve. God's intent was for Adam and Eve to not eat of the tree of knowledge of good an evil, period. God also added a punishment which supports God's intent. Free will implies no punishment for taking an action. Yes, there is a consequence for taking one action over another, but punishment uses fear where consequence seek to help one understand the impact of a decision absent fear. The only entity that does not provide fear is Satan; therefore, does Satan love mankind more than God?

Take a look at any demon manifestation in a person, and tell me what you see. Torment and desperate fear. Sleep paralysis is only the medical, physical realm means of labeling a demonic assault. Pure fear is how you'll hear best described by anyone who has experienced it. Compare near-death experiences - the ones describing Heaven are euphoric and blissful. The ones describing hell are in extraordinary fear and horror. I could go on literally forever with examples of how anything satanic, demonic, has a fear ingredient to it. How could you have possibly gotten so deceived as to think otherwise? I urge you please, try talking to God, receive him in repentance of your sin, and ask him to set you free from every bondage of demons. Plead the blood of Jesus to do so. In Daniel 7, Daniel twice mentions how our eternal destiny in heaven is to rule the Kingdoms of God under Him in Heaven (v. 18 and 22) and this idea is repeated in Revelation 22:5, and Paul mentions it again in 2 Timothy 2:11-12. This is the fullness of the restoration of creation to God's original plan (Colossians 1:19, Acts 3:21) This was also the destiny of Adam and Eve, starting with ruling over Earth creation and "subduing it" until they derailed that training. God always intended to give us the knowledge of good and evil. Even the angels have this knowledge, and a third of them chose evil and fell with Lucifer. Our eternal destiny, when we are made like Christ in the resurrection, is to be so much higher than the angels, so much so that Paul says we will judge the angles (1 Cor. 6:3) That would be impossible if they had that knowledge of good and evil but we didn't. The "punishment" was set there for a time so that they wouldn't take the fruit of good and evil before they were ready. Also, it is not a punishment, God simply says what will inevitably happen if they eat it. Like telling a child if they put their hand in the fire they will get burned. You are not punishing your child if they then decide to run to the flame and stick their hand in it. God is the source of all spiritual life as the preeminent spiritual being. God simply pointed out "If you choose seperation from me (a.k.a choosing to eat the fruit) you are choosing spiritual death" and that is exactly what happened

He subjected us to this existence(Rom 8:20-23) with free will and the hope that once called and impregnated with His Holy Spirit we would choose to reject our carnal mind in favor of His mind, the mind that was fully in His Son, the Messiah, the Christ. He never sinned, but we do sin, requiring us to repent of our sin on an ongoing basis. We were made precisely to experience and live sin so that we can come to understand and value the mind of God and desire that mind to be in us, to transform us.
If God did not desire us to know evil, He would certainly be an impotent God, because He utterly failed in that objective. Thus, since God most definitely is not impotent, but all powerful and the source of all knowledge and understanding, this was never His intent. Satan is the adversary of God, and we have been created subject to his mind, not God's, as temporary, physical beings that can choose to do good or to do evil. With a calling from God, human beings are given a choice, as God reveals Himself and His plan to an individual. We all have freedom to accept or reject that calling. A successful calling that leads to life requires ongoing repentance throughout one's life once called, faithfully living God's will in obedience to Him in all things. Choosing disobedience leads only to death from which there is no resurrection.
God sets before us the freedom to choose, between everlasting life and everlasting death. His desire is that we choose life, but He will not force His will on anyone. Each one of us will receive the reward that we choose. (Deut 30:19)
This is my own personal interpretation of the fruit.
I believe that yes God didn't want us to know about evil but it's also deeper than that. If it was simply God trying to protect us from evil why would he even create the tree or even better why create evil at all? To me, God set this up for more than one reason.
The first is obviously God showing us that we have free will. He gave them the choice to obey him or to ignore him. Most of creation didn't get that choice.
Another reason is that he created a world, universe, dimension or whatever you want to call it, where their are certain "rules/laws" that govern this place. One of which is Newton's 3rd law of motion. Which simply states "that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.". The interesting thing here is that the law exists both physically and spiritually. Hell is not a punishment, it's simply a consequence of our own actions.

Irenaeus (A leader of the Early Church shortly after the time of Jesus) had a great response to this question:
He described that Adam and Eve were in training so they could grow into perfection and Christ-likeness, from naive children into fully understanding and mature, immortal beings. Gods command to not eat of the Tree of the knowledge of good an evil was a command that allowed them free will, the option to either choose God or walk away (a necessity for love). What Irenaeus points out to great effect was that God was not withholding knowledge, He very well intended to gradually grow Adam and Eve into a perfect knowledge that would encompass the knowledge or good and evil and SO MUCH MORE. Adam and Eve’s primary sin wasn’t trying to grasp at a knowledge that God was withholding but it was rather trying to take this knowledge by self-will according to their timing rather than trusting God and His timing of when knowledge would be revealed.
This is reflected in the Bible and in many of the Early Church Fathers, the original, and still the greatest, sin is the sin of self-will as opposed to trusting God and His timing. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians that in Christ “ALL things are ours” and in Romans he writes that if the Father did not spare His own son Jesus but gave Him up to cover our sins how much more will He not FREELY give to us all things.” Still one of the most profound and believed lies in the world today is that God is a withholding God, but we must KNOW that what Paul says is true, He FREELY gives to us ALL THINGS, but it’s according to His will and timeline NOT ours
Show me in the Bible where your statement is true or implied to be true? There is NO such statement by God implying a "training" period for Adam and Eve. God's intent was for Adam and Eve to not eat of the tree of knowledge of good an evil, period. God also added a punishment which supports God's intent. Free will implies no punishment for taking an action. Yes, there is a consequence for taking one action over another, but punishment uses fear where consequence seek to help one understand the impact of a decision absent fear. The only entity that does not provide fear is Satan; therefore, does Satan love mankind more than God?

You start off by criticizing the "training" theory, in saying that nowhere in the Bible does it state this. The very next sentence, you make a statement that is nowhere to be found in the Bible, and even presumes to read God's mind! Not a good start...
What makes you think that adding punishment or fear to the consequence of a decision negates free will? Just because a choice is incentivized, does not mean one cannot still choose the other option. Consequence of course can have fearfullness all on it's own. If a fear factor is added into a choice being given by a person, it only reflects which way the person wants you to choose.
"Satan comes like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." There are of course 100 ways to destroy your outrageous claim about satan, but the scripture does the job by itself.
God demonstrates grace, blessing, and mercy countless times in his word, and in the lives of every single person who ever lived. Satan is the father of all lies. God offers us Paradise, satan tries to prevent us. God came to bind up the brokenhearted, renews his mercies for us daily, and promises those who love him that all things work to our good, Satan comes but to kill steal and destroy. God DIED FOR US, satan wants us dead. Pretty sure God loves us more.
Not a believer in the Bible? You're still without a case. Take a look at any demon manifestation in a person, and tell me what you see. Torment and desperate fear. Sleep paralysis is only the medical, physical realm means of labeling a demonic assault. Pure fear is how you'll hear best described by anyone who has experienced it. Compare near-death experiences - the ones describing Heaven are euphoric and blissful. The ones describing hell are in extraordinary fear and horror.
I could go on literally forever with examples of how anything satanic, demonic, has a fear ingredient to it. How could you have possibly gotten so deceived as to think otherwise? I urge you please, try talking to God, receive him in repentance of your sin, and ask him to set you free from every bondage of demons. Plead the blood of Jesus to do so. If done sincerely, you'll be so glad you did, i promise!

In Daniel 7, Daniel twice mentions how our eternal destiny in heaven is to rule the Kingdoms of God under Him in Heaven (v. 18 and 22) and this idea is repeated in Revelation 22:5, and Paul mentions it again in 2 Timothy 2:11-12. This is the fullness of the restoration of creation to God's original plan (Colossians 1:19, Acts 3:21) This was also the destiny of Adam and Eve, starting with ruling over Earth creation and "subduing it" until they derailed that training.
God always intended to give us the knowledge of good and evil. Even the angels have this knowledge, and a third of them chose evil and fell with Lucifer. Our eternal destiny, when we are made like Christ in the resurrection, is to be so much higher than the angels, so much so that Paul says we will judge the angles (1 Cor. 6:3) That would be impossible if they had that knowledge of good and evil but we didn't.
The "punishment" was set there for a time so that they wouldn't take the fruit of good and evil before they were ready. Also, it is not a punishment, God simply says what will inevitably happen if they eat it. Like telling a child if they put their hand in the fire they will get burned. You are not punishing your child if they then decide to run to the flame and stick their hand in it.
God is the source of all spiritual life as the preeminent spiritual being. God simply pointed out "If you choose seperation from me (a.k.a choosing to eat the fruit) you are choosing spiritual death" and that is exactly what happened
