Hey man thanks as always. But at min 4:10 you mention fov is higher quality. Everywhere else I’m seeing online says HQ is higher quality. Just mentioning. But like you said, they’re both amazing.
Just do any cropping you want in post off the FOV version, if you're shooting at 4k then just set up a 1080 sequence in Premiere and you have tons of latitude for cropping and stretching
the camera panning actually works but the back left remote button does not recenter the gymbal on mine...Do you have a special setting on your remote?....There are the C buttons but there is no setting that recenter ONLY the camera without aiming totally down first before recentering...YOU cannot use this while filming obviously unless you want to shoot your feet...how did you get this setting to directly recenter?
Hi my name is Roger , I have a DJI Mavric 2 Pro with a smart controller , which is missing Camera video coding and Video Size/Video Format menus found under the orange record button on the home screen. Do I need to change any settings for this to appear. Can someone please assist Regards Roger
you missed the biggest advantage of the 4K HQ - it's 10 bit instead of 8 bit. That's giving a lot more color information for advanced color grading. And also, it's the FOV that is downsampled to 4K. The HQ is 1:1 pixel mapping with no downsample, which is why it's cropped.
Here is a couple of suggestions I would like DJI to incorporate. 1. In the "P" mode have ALL collision sensors turn on or make it in the menu what collision sensors you can activate. This would keep you from flying sideways in a tree. 2. I would like to swap the settings in "LEFT" gimbal dial so I would rotate it to the "right" to point the camera down and rotate it "LEFT" to bring the camera back up.
I know you've realised already, but just to be precise... HQ is not a digital zoom, but real 4K taken from the center of the sensor, about 39mm (not 56). Full FOV is about 5.4K downsized to 4K, hopefully without line skipping. If image processing is properly done, both formats are pretty good, although only HQ takes advantage of 10bit h265 if I'm not wrong.
Thx, helped alot better than rotating the drone, however, you mention that the 'C1' button on the bottom will return the gimble to straight forward but I thought 'C1' was a customized button that has to be programmed thru settings. Clarify please.
Regarding the Pro’s version... DJI did release this information. They Full FOV setting is the downsampled 5.x video crushed into a UHD resolution. The HQ setting is utilizing full pixel readout. (No binning). It’s also not a Hasselblad camera. It’s a Sony sensor DJI glass leveraging Hasselblad’s 10bit color science. Aloha
DJI can call it Hasselblad... even though it is the same sensor as the Sony RX100 Mark 5 as all Hasselblad sensors are from Sony... AND... Sony bought Hasselblad outright about 2 years back. The lenses for my Inspire 2 are made by Fuji actually...
@@drewarmstrong4325 : Check the details, DJI Directly own a large stake in Hasselblad. Ventizz (Private Equity Co.) used to own 100% of it. (Hasselblad: Colab with Sony since 2012) (Not sure who made my I2 Kit Lens, I thought it was a Panasonic?? - my Zoom Lens is a Panasonic Pancake Lens.)

You don't know what you are talking about when it comes to 4K Fov and HQ. HQ is cropped to full pixel read-out and you get best true 1to1 pixel quality. While FOV is full matrix read-out and downsampling to 4k like a consumer 1000megapixel cameras do to get 4k.
Good to know - Thanks Brett. I have the original Mavic Pro and the Mavic Air but I think I may have to invest in the Mavic 2 Pro. Butt-in? Haha. Thanks!
Great tips Brett! Just got a Mavic 2 Pro myself and am glad I did after months of debating which one to get. Thanks for posting this. Looking forward to more. Subscribed!
The 4K HQ isn't downsampled. It's a 1:1 pixel readout. The 4K Full FOV is downsampled from 5.2k to 4k. The pro is the way to go! If you additionally crop the 4K HQ footage 115% you get an equal focal length to the Zoom and equal or better quality.
Awesome! I'm guessing the HQ will be SLIGHTLY sharper, but will have a little worse low light performance. Still even after cropping the sensor it's still a bigger size than the one of the zoom.
That ability to zoom with the Mavic 2 Pro is an important feature. I bought the Zoom the other day, because of that. Had I known about being able to do that with the Pro, it would have been worth the little extra $ for the Pro version. Great selling point that they should capitalize on.
Brilliant video..!!! I have subscribed and allowed all notifications.. :-) I have the Pro and last year did very little with it but this year, having bought the Smart Controller and some extra batteries, I intend to do a lot more... like learning to fly it properly and do my ACof2 and another course that I can`t remember... I know there is a lot negative comments about the SC but I, for one, wouldn`t be without, the freedom of not being chained to a mobile phone is brilliant..!!!
The difference will probably show up first in areas with nearly horizontal lines, as either moire or flickering. Agree that it is in many cases subtle.
I bought the Zoom, but I am returning it and have already ordered the Pro. The Zoom takes really good video, but without having the ability to manually adjust camera settings (ISO, f/stop/shutter speed), the photo quality can be compromised, especially in low light areas because the camera will automatically go to a higher IS to maintain a good exposure. This results in fairly grainy photos. For what I use the drone for (video, but primarily still photos), the Pro will be a better drone for me (I hope).
@@brettgaramella Thanks for the quick reply! I took it out for another test flight and found that you are right on. When I changed the mode to manual I had much better control of exposure settings and got much better results by changing the ISO to 100 (vs 800). In Lightroom, you can use the detail control to reduce noise. You lose a little sharpness, but you can add it back and get pretty nice results if you do it right. I do like the ability to zoom, but I am really looking forward to the Pro version and compare the differences. Who knows? I may end up sending back the Pro and keeping the Zoom. I'll also be comparing the results to my Phantom 4 Pro, which also has a 1" sensor. At this point I still think I'm more inclined to the Pro rather than the Zoom. The Pro arrives tomorrow, so I will be making some more evaluations as soon as I get it. Thanks!
From what I understand, the Pro in HQ mode only crops the captured image giving you a different framing. It is not a mechanical zoom and does not change the depth of field. On the other hand, the zoom ratio on the Zoom, in my opinion, does not justify it’s lower megapixel resolution. You can do creative zooming and “Ken Burns” effects in post processing of a high resolution Pro image.
Brett Garamella Good points. BTW ... in good light, where the subject is not too close to the lens, I couldn’t differentiate my Mavic Air footage from my P4P on small computer 27” screens. Here’s my video that is mostly done with an Air. vimeo.com/280662563
Hi, I just got my mavic 2 zoom delivered today and after all updates I cant workout how to activate that camera pan feature from your video. Helllpppp!!!!!
OK Brett, 2 questions, 1) I never thought about the zoom because it could zoom I guess. I'm thinking of the over all quality of the video because I'm going to take it to my editor to zoom and pan as needed. Am I missing something. You always loose something on a digital zoom so unless it is an optical zoom where you are filling the sensor without loosing pixels. 2) I asked you a question in another video that I had not received a response yet but I was thinking about waiting for the Mavic 3 or not. I'm also deciding my best controller. Phone, pad, glasses, goggles or their high end controller. I've had issues with my phone plug staying connected so that makes me nervous. Any suggestions? I also have a laptop with wifi.
thank's for heads up, still decided what drone buy. 4 of my top five, actualy my top 4 are dji, 5 is bebop2 but only cause of skycontroller black, dji should have put hdmi on mavic's and spark. but as old school film photographer i should tell you FOV is not FULL OV, It is Fiel Of View or you viewing angle, hence 28mm and 40mm 28mm being wide angle, and 35-50 being human eye frontal view depending on person.
Brett Garamella Yes Brett everything else works normal! When I press the iPad mini screen it focuses the camera no blue dot. Any thoughts? Thanks again bro 👍🏼
I think the reason why DJI did not mention that zoom feature on the mavic 2 pro is because they would not sale as many mavics 2 zoom as that is the strong key salling feature of the drone. Like you sayd, now that you know of then the pro version is in your thoughts... by the way!! I love your spanish accent 😀😀
Sweet😀😀👏 have you ever experience the black screen issue??? And do you know how to factory reset these mavic 2. Unlike the mavic pro. It doesn't offer you the factory reset option. Please if you can. Hope you would help. 👏👏👍👍👍
Hi Brett, this is increadle information. Congratulations and thanks for sharing. Do you know how much weight can 2 Pro lift? I want a drone for fishing. Regards, Paul
The zoom also records a "sharper" image because of the focal length. In most shooting scenarios, the zoom will give you a better image overall. The Pro is only beneficial for lower light scenes. The HDR ability is also a bit gimmicky. A lot of reviewers have been disappointed with the Pro's performance in relation to the pricing above the zoom.
Someone may have said this: Narrow FOV 4K should still be as high quality (pixels) as the Full FOV 4k Full Sensor = 5472x3648 = 19.9MP "4k" = 3840x2160 = 8.2k So in this mode the camera is either averaging or binning data. (Downsampling) at a 1/1.4 crop frame size = 3908 x 2605 = 10.2MP (still more data than is needed for a 4k video feed) (~68 pixels to crop in width and 445 in height to get the 4k frame size.) So downsampling or croping the Crop-frame data to 4k means that there doesn't need to be any "pixel" degradation, what it does mean is that at the full FOV the video can have a higher "bit" depth, meaning richer colours are (theoretically) possible. The image processor can use the data from all the pixels (>2x needed) for colour and image detail information. (Image degradation would only be visually apparent in cases if the video were upsampled, from say a 2k sensor to 4k output - that is hard to do well as the "missing" data can't actually be created (without an "AI" engine)) Narrowing the FOV on a short lens doesn't give the exact same perspective one would get from using a longer lens but with adequate information available the image (crop) still looks very good - not at all like the noise you get from "digital zoom" on a lot of low-end cameras/phones)...
With the 4k HQ vs full FOV. The HQ stands for High Quality, it is 1:1 pixel true 4k it is higher quality than full FOV because you don’t get the Moiré issues anywhere as much, along with the other issues to get with downsampling the full 5k to 4k that the drone has to do when in full FOV. 4k HQ is a ‘native’ resolution 4k full FOV is a processed 5k image. Note: I’m not 100% sure if it’s a processed image on if they are doing the cheap old trick of skipping pixels out when recording the image. Which is an even worse way to get 4k off a 5k sensor but takes little to no CPU power.
The panning worked as described but when hitting the C1 button to return to horizontal, the camera goes to 90 degrees down. Then I have to press the C1 again for the camera to go horizontal. Did I miss something?
Hey Brother, not looking to hack on your list of "secrets" but the features you are discussing weren't pointed out because they aren't new. And for anybody whom have used any of the DJI Osmo products know about the finger pan and tilt feature. Also, the C1 and C2 bu'ens are programmable, as is the five point joy stick. Resetting the gimbal to centre is a programmable option to whichever bu'en you choose. Both of these features as well as the resolution cropping were all available from the first Mavic on through.
thanks ! Any chance we can enjoy a test run by darkest light? Pushing both to their limits, so we can decide whether the 1" is really worth it by darkest conditions? Keep on!
You're a chief! thanks for your considerating of that. Here (France), regulation is incredibly "strict" (or ...mad?), i.e: no way you are allowed to fly whatever model at night -there is a precise delay after official sunset time, when you should be grounded. Amongst many other restrictions... So I'll be soo grateful for such a video (as all others). Enjoy you flights!
Good one for finding these features out. I don’t have a Mavic yet, but I would of thought that the ability to move the camera would be fundamentally a feature of the remote - or maybe I’m thinking of an Inspire with dual controllers?
Thanks Brett, (1) All the firmware of the drone, iPhone suppose 2b update, (2) yes, same cable, (3) I use the USB port on the controller....dun know y its dosent work for my iPhone.... Anyway, really thanks for your reply...
so you have 48 mm max focal length on the zoom and 39,2mm on the pro? what about the quality? could you show a 100% crop or 1000% crop on both drones with max "zoom"?
can you recommend a drone for those of us who dont own a smart phone or a "pad/tablet"?...I want to get into drones, but I dont want or need a smart phone or a pad/tablet....
Or you can get the DJI crystal sky monitor.. (It is a tablet with additional real buttons and 2 card slots - it uses batteries from the Cendence controller.) NB. Not cheap, but still less than a new iphone.
1st secret was part of the Go4 „get to know“ tutorial on my smart controller, but you helped it click into my mind about the second secret that it’s actually like a 2nd prime lense. Funny that on an other Video the HQ was considered the better quality cinematic choice. Personally I prefer the full wide tho
I´m a little bit sad about my last fligth with the zoom. Im not quick enough to get home before the rain comes. 40 sec rain flight. Can i be sure about the safety of my drone? I have dried the drone outside. After that it run 40 minutes without flying just to keep the ventilator running. It all works well. Are there any experiences? Do i have to check it by DJI? Don´t know. Thank you.
Wow, didn't konw that we can move the camera with the finger. Thanks for the video man ! Just received the Mavic zoom. Looking forward for your other videos about this amazing drone ^^
@@brettgaramella You failed to mention that the Zoom will go from 28 to 96 mm. It will zoom 2x optically and 2 more digitally for a total of 4x. And this is while you're flying!
Brett Garamella you don’t like to digitally zoom but you don’t mind digitally cropping. That makes sense. That’s the whole purpose of zooming... being able to get the shot without flying closer.

tsym for pointing out the range shooting in the hasselblad one ty for real :)
Someone may have said this: Narrow FOV 4K should still be as high quality (pixels) as the Full FOV 4k
Full Sensor = 5472x3648 = 19.9MP
"4k" = 3840x2160 = 8.2k So in this mode the camera is either averaging or binning data. (Downsampling)
at a 1/1.4 crop frame size = 3908 x 2605 = 10.2MP (still more data than is needed for a 4k video feed)
(~68 pixels to crop in width and 445 in height to get the 4k frame size.)
So downsampling or croping the Crop-frame data to 4k means that there doesn't need to be any "pixel" degradation, what it does mean is that at the full FOV the video can have a higher "bit" depth, meaning richer colours are (theoretically) possible. The image processor can use the data from all the pixels (>2x needed) for colour and image detail information. (Image degradation would only be visually apparent in cases if the video were upsampled, from say a 2k sensor to 4k output - that is hard to do well as the "missing" data can't actually be created (without an "AI" engine))
Narrowing the FOV on a short lens doesn't give the exact same perspective one would get from using a longer lens but with adequate information available the image (crop) still looks very good - not at all like the noise you get from "digital zoom" on a lot of low-end cameras/phones)...
Thanks for the video. Excellent input, keep 'em coming.
4k HQ is a ‘native’ resolution
4k full FOV is a processed 5k image.
Note: I’m not 100% sure if it’s a processed image on if they are doing the cheap old trick of skipping pixels out when recording the image. Which is an even worse way to get 4k off a 5k sensor but takes little to no CPU power.
Brett Garamella and most people watch videos on monitors that can’t tell the difference in 8 bit or 10 bit.
Cheers so much, I knew the 2 Pro could punch in though. I subscribed:)
The panning worked as described but when hitting the C1 button to return to horizontal, the camera goes to 90 degrees down.
Then I have to press the C1 again for the camera to go horizontal. Did I miss something?
In your menu you can program your c1 and C2 buttons to do what you want them to do.
Well done. Liked and subbed
Thank you amigo. Siempre para adelante nunca para atrás. I getting my DJI Mavic Pro 2 in 2 weeks.
So is the zoom on the pro optical? It seems like it which is awesome
Thanks for the finger panning tipp!
Great video, just subscribed!
Good info..thanks
can you use remote control or at least assign customize button to pan camera left or right?
Your videos are so fun and informative. Thanks, man!
You an increase the zoom on a mavic 2zoom from a48 mm to 96 mm only on video mode
Thanks for this vid. I asked the seller if it was possible to move the cam to the right and left. He said it was not possible :-)
It's not a Hasselblad camera. Dji used their natural color science to process images, thats it. Camera is made by dji not Hasselblad.
Good one for finding these features out. I don’t have a Mavic yet, but I would of thought that the ability to move the camera would be fundamentally a feature of the remote - or maybe I’m thinking of an Inspire with dual controllers?
Thanks for video. On the original mavic you can zoom by squeezing the screen out and back in. Can you do that with the 2 pro?
Hola gracias viví en Cali Colombia.... thanks
hi there! such a nice info, is any hints as I can't make it at iPhone 7Plus but iPad worked!
Thanks Brett, (1) All the firmware of the drone, iPhone suppose 2b update, (2) yes, same cable, (3) I use the USB port on the controller....dun know y its dosent work for my iPhone....
Anyway, really thanks for your reply...
Nice video cannot wait for my drone to come in
Thanks for the videos.
My question is will I have problems using a galaxy tab s4 with the drones or did I need an ipad?
Thanks
@@brettgaramella thank you very much
so you have 48 mm max focal length on the zoom and 39,2mm on the pro? what about the quality? could you show a 100% crop or 1000% crop on both drones with max "zoom"?
Nice tips! My first drone is coming in the mail today so I am excited to finally have some drone footage in the daily vlogs!
I got the Tello to start! It's up on my channel now! First flight footage coming tomorrow!
I do believe that the cropped in setting has the higher quality. Google it.
can you recommend a drone for those of us who dont own a smart phone or a "pad/tablet"?...I want to get into drones, but I dont want or need a smart phone or a pad/tablet....
Or you can get the DJI crystal sky monitor.. (It is a tablet with additional real buttons and 2 card slots - it uses batteries from the Cendence controller.) NB. Not cheap, but still less than a new iphone.
Nice! Looking forward to your comparison!
I didn't know that.. Great info. Thanks.
@@brettgaramella Thanks I will. I hope to get a mavic someday. I have a Spark now. I just subbed to your channel.. great stuff.
Brilliant !!! Thanks Brett , new subscriber now !! Love it when normal people blow the big guys out the water X got a zoom
Great info, Thanks!
Is this only for iPad or phone too
Thanks for the info didn’t know about the screen gimbal movement 👍
1st secret was part of the Go4 „get to know“ tutorial on my smart controller, but you helped it click into my mind about the second secret that it’s actually like a 2nd prime lense. Funny that on an other Video the HQ was considered the better quality cinematic choice. Personally I prefer the full wide tho
Yeah the HQ and Full FOV are nearly the same in image quality.
Don´t know. Thank you.
Yes i have the Care
Yes no Problem
Wow, didn't konw that we can move the camera with the finger. Thanks for the video man ! Just received the Mavic zoom.
Looking forward for your other videos about this amazing drone ^^
I was about to get the zoom but I just was thinking what am be using it more
Brett Garamella how can I see the videos wane I use a sd card do I connect to the computer
YEA THEY TOOK THAT FROM THE AUTEL EVO
@@brettgaramella You failed to mention that the Zoom will go from 28 to 96 mm. It will zoom 2x optically and 2 more digitally for a total of 4x. And this is while you're flying!
Brett Garamella you don’t like to digitally zoom but you don’t mind digitally cropping. That makes sense. That’s the whole purpose of zooming... being able to get the shot without flying closer.
Hi I can't the button on the back of controller c1 or c2 to make the sensor to go back to the middle/center after using the screen to move the sensor, any idea on how to make this work cheers
