I love Donald O'Connor because he embodies positive energy, talent and beauty. Debbie Reynolds is wonderful too. The music is nice, it makes me happy and i want to dance when i hear this song. However i'm french and i never succeed in finding the original movie with french subtitles :( because even if it is not the better movie ever it seems very nice!
please do what I did a long time ago at a very young age because of my love for cinema : learn english ! you won t regret it, you 'll find out there s much more to hollywood (and to disney') than you can imagine I was once a translator and interpreter because I wanted to help people like you (and like my old self), I have a whole house full of big books I brought back from hollywood and all america and wanted to translate them into english but they won t let me do it, they won t publish them, because there are not enough people like you guys, even in A merica those books don t sell that well thanks to internet we now can see videos like this one, and even entire movies, not just still pictures in books but I see you do speak english and I admit that song lyrics are not always easy to understand without subtitles even in your own language , so if you want to find dvds with subtitles, I know from experience that the best place is flea markets and garage sales and collector sales and you must have a dvd player with the ameriican system, many rare american dvds have french subtitles for canada, and spanish for south america, that s how I learned I that language too, I wish you the best of luck and happiness, thank you for your post
Sometimes you can find transcripts of the film! I hunted one down for The Wizard of Oz for my Dutch friend. I’ve also heard a lot of people who learned English from Mr Rogers Neighborhood!

And, apparently, that's why this movie came out just a year later - there was even a reference to Singing in the Rain in one of the scenes :) I think the age difference between Gene and Debbie was a bit too much for any believable chemistry between their characters on the screen, and Kelly being the director (quite an imposing and harsh one sometimes) didn't help either. And I Love Melvin is, despite not being a masterpiece, is very funny and down-to-earth and just so cute! It's a shame it's no where near as well-known as some other movies from that era.
The 20 year age difference didn’t seem to help. Gene Kelly was hard on her and found her to be too immature. She would bust up laughing during serious romantic scenes and chew gum and take it out of her mouth and stick it on props. When it came to the big kiss scene, she got grossed out and ran to gargle and spit out some Coca Cola.
Not many people can act, sing, dance and be a deft comedian with equal skill. I think Danny Kaye and Donald O’Connor were the only two that could do it ALL convincingly.
Debbie was a terrific dancer. Well into her forties she was excellent in What's the matter with Helen dancing the tango and as a dance instructor. A woman of many talents. She is well missed.

Calvin Crews - I didn't realize she passed away, or forgot. I knew someone who used to be her double back on those days. My friend said that Debbie was the sweetest thing. She said she and Debbie were pregnant at the same time. My friend's apartment burned up and Debbie stepped in and gave her furniture and clothes. She told me about how Debbie lost her husband to Elizabeth Taylor. My friend still looked like her when they were in their 50's.
Ok tell me why musicals are not as popular today as back then? I know we got Disney, and a few new musicals. Like the greatest showman. But nothing like the old classics.
I would guess that it's because these old movies are hold overs from live performances, with all the singing and dancing and what not. The talents that people look for in actors and in movies nowadays have taken a much darker role since theyre able to do much more with the medium. Movies back then were more a form of escapism from the war and recovering from the depression, so they were made with a much happier and romantic feeling to them, Id say.
Oh trust me, musicals are booming. There's a huge community of theatre kids (usually teens) who literally worship the ground Broadway stars walk on, buy cast albums, make covers, discuss deeper meanings, and basically freak out about musical theater together. It's so widespread that there's even become a problem with "fake musical fans". The industry is booming if you know where to look.
I loved these two in this movie, and wish they had done more. Definitely a chemistry there and they paired very well. They remained very close until he passed. I just wish fate brought them together, since there first marriages both ended due to infidelity. So adorable together. I wish the ending on the trailer was the one they actually used. So sweet.
Stars in 50s were so great. They can sing. They can dance. They can act. And they were so beautiful and gorgeous.
