The trials and tribulations of unrequited love .. Brilliant songwriting by Morrissey & Marr Still to this day The Queen is Dead Album is my favorite 1/14/2023
I listened to this song on repeat, when I was break up heartbroken in 1990. I am just now listening to it again for the first time since. That person who broke my heart? I still know him, and he’s a friend now, and I might have to send him this, and tell him why, because of course, he absolutely doesn’t know that. Now we’ll be able to laugh about it. Absolute proof that the old adage “this too shall pass” is virtually always true. 😊
Really? That’s the only reason I took an interest in the Smiths, was their amazing lyrics. You should listen to all the lyrics of The Queen is Dead, the album this song is off. They are amazing. He was a poet. “It’s so easy to laugh, it’s so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind”, unfortunately I don’t think with the way he hates, he’d be capable of writing these lyrics now. Still I can’t give up these old tunes. I listened to this one on repeat when I got my young heart broken once. 😊
I don't think this song is about unrequited love, I think it's just about a very extreme and very powerful kind of loneliness. The Smiths are intentionally overdramatic and so are so many of these lyrics, because they want to convey an emotion, not an actual story or situation. "It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind", as a line that makes me feel a profound kind of sadness.
this is truly a awesome song.when i hear this it brings such strong emotions for me and a reminder of the begining of summer in San Diego, wink you know who you are
"It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes guts to be gentle and kind." Gee someone really needs to remind 2019 Morrissey of this fuckin song...
@@mountaindew7190 Being a racist islamophobic anti-immigrant old cunt who supports For Britain is absolutely the antithesis of "gentle and kind". Morrissey has become the antithesis of everything he seemingly stood for in The Smiths. So *fuck 'im.*
Jeff Buckley took this song to an entire 'nother level. Made it his own. Occasionally the remakes are better. Like Manfred Mann doing Springsteen's Blinded by the Light. Or Springsteen doing the Animals It's My Life and We Gotta Get Out Of This Place.
Has an emotional honesty most songwriters would kill for
exactly!
“if you’re so funny, then why are you on your own tonight.” what if you just killed me morrisey
fr wtf why did he just say that does he hate me
You really can't get more powerful than this.
Extraordinary.
“Love is natural and real,
But not for you my love”
Morrissey has such a way with words 😂
I just love how emotional, deep and real it is!
I always come back to this song.
We'll always have this gateway
"love is natural and real"
"...but not for such as you and i..."
"My love"...
It takes strength to be gentle and kind!
Plain and simply one of the best songs ever written.

I've never paid attention to the lyrics and I'm blown away. Wow! Just Wow.

@@gaynorgregory2528 i like to see the smiths era of morrissey as different to the one we have right now.
@@ELSGaming Both are great.
I have never felt something more then this song in this moment
Funny 2 years later I feel the same. Cycles, we’re all just overlapping the same few cycles, aren’t we?

Don't conflate "gentle and kind" with "being nice". The niceness cult is a plague upon our culture.

Wrapping myself up in this song, like a blanket, as I climb into an empty bed. Oh well. Enough said.
Their most well crafted, dark night of the soul song..
Bawling my eyes out
*sips boiling hot tea, inhales puff of cigarette* 🚬
This song is so real, and honest, it makes me cry
Come on ?!? Unbelievably beautiful song.

Buckley did NOT improve this song, or make it his own. Only a complete idiot would have that thought.
@@MR.B00_ agreed. I love Buckley in general but he makes this song sound too boring and funereal
He appreciated the brilliance of this song and paid homage to it!
