- My top 5 principles to keep in mind when buying ANY gear, but in particular this video focuses on sleeping bags and quilts for hiking. If you learn and apply these tips and principles you won't waste your money on gear that doesn't cut the cheese.

Great principles. I can attest to not trying to buy your gear with only a month until your trip. You won't find what you want. I always buy gear at the end of a season too, so all my winter gear once the past season stuff is on sale so you can still keep an eye out for the stuff you want at a lower price--you just don't always get a great selection on colors.
Hi Tucker, forgetting about lightweight for a moment ( bye bye entire fan base) just for general knowledge loik at Wiggy’s bags. Most heavy duty bulky bags that I know ( and love ) get in cold & wet : warm in 5 mins. Get up in the morning ; you and your wet clothes are dry !!! Very interesting grouchy old guy really knows about insulation . Different audience but most interesting. Thanks for all your great vids , pods ? Whatever they’re called . Most informative and if I ever get off the couch , wonderfully helpful .

Sage advice. I have a light 3 season down bag that I cover with a hammock underquilt when it gets around freezing. I also have a 3 season synthetic bag when it's really wet. Can't beat experience and there's nothing like shivering all night to remind you maybe you've gone too light ha ha!
It's good to think about why and how. There's a lot of gear specific videos, and they really have their place too, especially around trusting other people's opinions on "known" gear. But I really like the idea of thinking things through, and systems that help the process. It's a good system. It's a great video.
I've always taken my time, and reviewed things to death, and look at each thing as integrated with as many of the other things in the system as possible too.

PIMPT by Chase. Great principles and the modulation point is really where you figure out how good or bad your gear really is. I doubled up a newer bag with my quilt when first testing it in winter and realized how much better it was when I woke up hot and sweating in the night. Previously I'd have to layer gear and still would have been cold, the right gear for a specific job is so much better.
THanks for the video! I bought all my gear two years ago and I am happy that I have all the essentials that I need, so every summer I just need little things for new adventures. I hate buying gear, doing all this comparisons and considering and spending the money. 🤕 But when it's carefully done you only do it once luckily (until something breaks).
Never take the temperature rating literally, you can use is as a guideline but it’s very individual at what temperature you feel cold in. I bought a -9C comfortable rating bag but I was warm in minus -17C but I wore a wool base layer and thick wool socks in it also. It’s also important to eat a fat rich meal before going to sleep in freezing temperatures so your body has a good amount of fuel to stay warm. Always bring chocolate bars when winter camping, if you’re really cold and shivering you need fast energy.
This has to apply to baselayers or lack thereof - merino in winter obviously, but in summer freeballing is healthier. Major Ozzie advantage there because it has to be easier for uncircumcised guys, and I think that explains why American channels lean on selling/endorsing brands of underwear for hiking.

Spent my first night sleeping on snow in a park in Helsinki. Was like 400m from home so i felt secure.. it was snowing and the temp was -15. Interesting night!

The cumulus sleeping bags are really good and there customer service is too
Normal sleeping bags are to short for me, so it always felt uncomfortable. The hood and collar never worked for me. A good fit is often underestimated.

I brought a winter bag and tested it a few times before using it. Its sooo warm its comfort rating is -18C. Have other gear that is good too
Good advice! Puts into words what experience can teach if one is open to new ideas. I always do a sort after-action review when I get home: what worked, what didn't, what was on me (skill level) what was the gear. Sell/donate what doesn't shine out and research the next. Plus: Shop the season-end sales to save money and have time to test. Also, your video is beautifully shot! New camera?
Agreed! Doing a quick written review immediately before you forget is very important.
Agree on these principles, but don't be hatin' on my One bag. 🙂 I was very skeptical, but have been using it in temps ranging from 15F-40F with great comfort and results. (ok, to be fair it's not the lightest or compact bag)
3:21 I had to really stretch on this but you don’t mean “modulate” here, you mean “modularize”. Modulate is the control a change or impel a modification. Modularize means to make modular (or to create an set of interchangeable complementary equipment).
yes i have 2 sleeping bags one which will take you down to - 0 degree,s and one which will take me down to - 5 degree.s so what i do is not to go in weather which is below 0 degre,s but what i do if i am feeling a bit cold is i allways take my yellowstone fleece sleeping bag liner which will add 5 to 7 degree,s on the bag. and i bought 2 one for each bag

Another good video, but I disagree with a principle of yours that appears in several videos of yours- you’re against products that serve multiple purposes. I can see what you mean in being skeptical of a manufacturer’s claim of a multi function piece of equipment, and viewers should be cautious that perhaps it does those many functions poorly. But there’s another factor to consider… weight. And when items perform many functions, even if only moderately well, the weight savings can add up and make them worthwhile. Ray Jardine is a big proponent of multifunctional gear. But what he has in mind are hikers creativity both in selection and modification of their equipment to fit their needs. And unorthodox use of items not obviously multifunctional. My ultralight rain jacket is also great as a windbreaker. But in a downpour, I use a heavy duty poncho (not a cheap one), and that poncho is also a layer of warmth if needed and can be used under my pad for more warmth and over my down quilt to help keep it dry (and added warmth if used that way), and can use as a pack cover. My expensive Bear canister is lighter than the normal ones, but fits more food for the weight and is a more convenient shape for my pack. And I can sit on the canister, which is a nice luxury (although I wouldn’t buy a chair) and it protects from rodents. Normal bear bags can still be torn into by mice. So in deciding to get the expensive, lighter bear canister, I take into account the multi functionality, as Jardine would, esp considering weight savings. My waterproof socks are lighter than taking gore Tex shoes and can serve as camp socks in non rainy conditions when I’m in my tent. They can also be used as mittens in really cold weather.
Also, buffs are great multi functional gear, and trekking poles used as tent stakes, weapon/defense, dig cat holes.
when using 2 bags, you add them together and substract 70 (F) best to use synthetic on the top layer.
You’re gonna compress your down though
@sdericmonty not really unless you try to put one inside the other, either a quilt or unzipped bag on top, I've been doing for a while now as I can't afford a manageable sub zero bag. when I had my 50° quilt made, I enlarged the footbox so my 20 can slide rite in for that reason. It also mitigates the condensation from the main bag from Inside and outside.

you're terribly complicating rather easy and uncomplicated thing :D ... (three-)seasoned hiker has exactly two sleeping bags (one for summer and one 3-season) and two sleeping pads (one UL and one 3-season R-value > 3) and that's it :) .. but making about that 8-minute video and still saying nothing is real state of art :) .. good work !!!
