Former WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, sits down with The Pivot Podcast ahead of his fight on Oct 15th at the Barclays Center vs. Robert Helenius, which is his long-awaited return after suffering two straight knockouts from Tyson Fury.
Traveling to Tuscaloosa, Deontay's hometown and place where he's been training- Ryan, Channing and Fred are blown away by the journey and growth Deontay expresses and how he's dedicated the past few years to finding himself. From his environment shaping the man he is today to the impact becoming a father has had on his career to his experience with ayahuasca to his plans left in boxing. Considered one of the most prolific boxers of this era, the guys respect his journey from being a small town guy to global stardom and how his upbringing and need to protect himself and loved ones as a means of survival mode shaped him to one of the most successful athletes in the sport.
After struggling with suicidal thoughts and suffering from mental health fears, Deontay took the initiative to start rebuilding and healing from the personal and professional trauma experienced. With highs, come lows, and Deontay opens up to the guys and talks about his suicide attempt.
A decision lots of athletes face, Wilder explains how he overcame his lowest point, and why he embraces everyday...thankful for being alive. eContinuously on a journey of self-discovery, Deontay talks about ayahuasca and credits his experience with changing his views on life and refocusing his mind on boxing. The birth of his daughter, Naieya Wilder, served as his inflection point and greatest source of motivation. Naeiya was diagnosed with spina bifida in March of 2005 and Wilder turned to boxing as a way to release his family from the shackles of poverty. He quickly learned that his childhood fights served as a master class for his natural-born gift when he sparred with a professional and won.
Ryan asks if Deontay has respect for Tyson Fury which he immediately says no while sticking to his story that Fury didn't win that fight naturally and created an unfair matchup. When asked why he didn't speak up more vocally on his thoughts, Deontay honestly responds he didn't want to mess up his opportunity financially and entertaining fans around the world. In recognition of his impact and growth, his home town of Tuscaloosa recently honored Deontay with a statue in the heart of his hometown, which he cites as his biggest accomplishment.

The fact this guy started boxing one year and made the Olympic team and won a medal is incredible
Crazy!
Absolutely. The man has the right hand from God.
Remarkable story. Folks hate this man for no reason
@@a.k.infinity1502if he could only take his losses better
@@devoid2783 People hated him when he was winning
I love the way you allow the guest to speak and share their story without interruption. I just can't stop appreciating this, thank you.
I swear watchin IAA literally pisses me off bc they all just talk over each other it’s like a debate show not a podcast
@@steph4032 That's why I stopped
Sometimes the guest is so prominent you lose the host! Like you might go 20 mins without seeing FT.. that’s so tough 💎💎
Thank god
What Deontay said about his dad expressing that they didn’t have friends was the same way my parents raised me. I’m glad they did too. I was able to dodge so many bullets from fake people
Facts
I felt that and remembered when I was told!
same it made me a LONER naturally which kept distraction far waaay from me ..sometimes your parents give you advice but you understand it when you get older
Alabama Finest‼️🔥🥊🫶🏾
Bro, I grew up without a father, almost became a soyboy and there has been things that I’ve felt but haven’t been able to properly describe in the past, but Deontay here pretty much sums set up. That no friend philosophy is gold, let me tell you
That was an amazing interview… Wilder is way more mature and centered than the media painted him out to be… glad he’s in a good space mentally and that people will see what he stands for… wish him luck in his fight and looking forward to these 3 years he will give the boxing world! He’s a monster heavyweight no doubt !!! The Bronze Bomber !!!
That's what this podcast is for. The media companies have goals and bosses. Corporate sponsors, owners and commissioners don't have time to tell everyone's story and make money. Some don't even care.
Fury Humbled him, that's the truth.
Mature centered people arent sore losers that have to lie about "proof" they have 🤦♂️🤣
The “PIVOT” has influenced many of our own personal pivots. We greatly appreciate these men! It’s like we can’t stop watching!💯🤝
All I can say is...the guests and interviews a getting better and better! I so appreciate you guys for coming up with "The Pivot"!
Getting better?! Lol they've already had Shaq, Kevin Hart, and Floyd Mayweather... they wayy past better now, Lol.
They top tier now 😏
The Pivot needs to have their own TV show with these amazing guests!!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Factz they need to be on cable
They have it. THIS
Gonna have to be on HBO or something so they're not censored.
This is their own show and they actually own it
Cable TV is dead
Deontay Wilder started boxing at the age of 20 to help pay for his sick daughter's medical bills, and look what he has accomplished. Imagine if he started boxing at the age of 10 or younger like most world champions, how can you not respect this man! Peace and blessings to him and his family 🙏🏽💪🏾
Facts 💯🧠👁️🤟🏿🤟🏿
Helps being matched correctly I mean how can you have 40 odd fights and only fought 3 top 10 opponents🤣
@@Craigox001 🧠
,a true God 🙏.Our Children are everything
@@Craigox001 But they all seen the canvas stop being a hater he got more den 3 top 10 contenders on his resume
Wilder’s Life Story & Journey is simply amazing! 🥊
Yeah, to idiots
My therapy session every time they drop another vid with a guest! Absolutely engaging. These interviews take on a life of its own and it’s so organic and honest pure!🙏🏾🔥
Shed a tear on this one. So wise so motivated much needed !!! 🤲🏿💪🏾💪🏾
A real man/father/husband and a champion. Infinite respect.
A true man wouldnt be a sore loser that lies about "proof" and seeing as hes not a champion 🤷♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m 2 min in and this is already a legendary interview. This Wilder is rare form!🔥🔥🔥
In terms of impact and learning about a person, this might have been one of the best episode ive seen y'all do! Big ups to The Pivot podcast, Huge fan!
And there’s still more to come.
This interview wouldnt have happened if they were with Brandon. He thought he could beat Wilder and he would have interrupted him so much. Thank you Pivot for always having well facilitated meaningful conversations, humor, and guest that we always want to see/hear from.
👏 , such great hosts
Brandon who?
I like Deontay! I love how he talks about his family. He has a lot of depth. This was great. His statute cool how he broke that down so beautiful of what that meant to him and his fans/followers.
Wilder is one of a kind. I’m a big fan, much more after this interview 🙏 thanks Pivot for hosting this interview
Top 3 wildest starts to an interview I've ever seen😭
Wilder went a lil crazy
@@lornegreen6755 my man openly admitted to conspiring to murder someone within 2 minutes😂
Man y’all do the best at putting the audience in the guests’ shoes. No misses detected🤟🏾
Wow !!!!
The way y’all allowed Deonte to be so open and vulnerable was priceless! I geared up a few times ❤❤❤
ThankYou ThankYou!!
I’ll be routing for you Deonte ! You’re Already The Winner in my eyes 🙏🏾
I appreciate how aware, articulate, transparent, authentic & strong this brother is...he's so reserved, self assured, focused & built in a firm foundation.
If deontay had an eddie futch, ray arcel, jack blackburn, emmanuel steward or george benton? Imagine how unstoppable he would be. People don't realize he's fairly new to boxing & dominated with purely raw skills...
This was probably the best guest they’ve had yet I love everything DW stands for
I love how he said I’m gonna show you when you’re up not when you’re down. Wish more people followed that
When he talking about his daughter that’s TOO FUCKING DEEP . You can. Hear his voice . True CHAMP
The grind is real with these kings ❤️
RC ain’t playin. That man is omnipresent 😂
This the show where a black man can come and be seen and a man . Whatever there doing or have done the Pivot gives then a real platform to be seen in a truly humanizing way . I appreciate that so much . That’s Guys for real ! ❤
Greatness is only determined by service- Deontay Wilder
Cameraman will forever give Wilder that side eye 👀 after that alley fight story 😳
He’s strictly his camera 📸 man after that lol
Who was he talking about? Charlie zelenoff? Lmao
Incredible interview, not much more to say for me. I knew Wilder, been a fan of his ability and career but truthfully .. I didn't know him and now my respect and understanding of his life has increased a lot. This pod is a great example of the value of the new media surge. There is no way we would get anything close to this from Wilder during an ESPN interview even if he wanted to be open.
This is why Deontay is my champion. Pure heart with brains. Values wisdom.
Wilder killed this interview 🔥. This was incredible
"It's okay to cry your cleansing your body" i like that.
Deontay is wise beyond his years. Thanks for giving him the platform to let the world know.
Big respect to Wilder - saw a side of him that I haven’t seen before
One of the biggest punchers in history. It's about time they brought a fighter back on the pod! It's always dope when they do but its been awhile.
Not gonna lie I got emotional when I heard his story about his daughter because I can relate. Great interview!
I didn’t know anything about Wilder other than as a talented fighter. Knowing all this backstory and the way he sees life, that makes me interested in seeing him succeed.
Lets say it people, "This is not a podcast...this is a show"!
You can hear that Deep Southern Alabama in his accent and incorrect speech pronunciation..... But you can absolutely 💯% feel all the wisdom, passion, and life experiences in his speech.
May GOD Bless this King and his family for the rest of their life. And may GOD Bless the PIVOT for introducing him to me. Never knew him until now. This man has been through every aspect of life. show was a mindset opener for sure. ❤️
Wilder showing how Human even Champions of his caliber are. Obviously we all human, but it’s easy to forget some of these public figures are people just like you and I and especially fighters. They seem super human or above mistakes at time. But wilder talking about his past and his outlook on his life is truly inspirational. A true man of honor. Even in loss he went out on his shield and I’ve always admired that. The last fight he went the last 5-6 rounds tired and hurt and he never stopped coming forward and trying his best. He can hold his head high. True champion , G bless brother 🤝
That last 10 mins of the interview had me in stitches 😂😂
Watching this interview makes me respect Deontay even more. The focus and mental toughness is amazing.
Let run their numbers up. 1 million subscribers by December 31st.
Dope interview! I love the positively and energy. Much and continued success to wilder and this podcast
Boooomb squaaaaad🔥🔥🔥 I know his boxing acumen isn't 100 but damn I love watching this man's highlight reels🙌🏾
And another one!!! I learn so much about people in other arenas of life. This man is definitely one who is blessed and his storytelling is meant for life skill-building. The fact he sought his family’s support to return to the ring!! ❤️💎🙌🏾
Wow this is crazy, I was born with Spina Bifida and I respect Deontay for raising his child because I know it was tough for my parents raising me. Him seeing the Moon smiling though 👀
How can you not love this man a HW American Champion from a none traditional boxing place of America
USA 🇺🇸 USA 🇺🇸 USA 🇺🇸 let's get behind our Champion
Love these guys, Respect 4 the Champ! Keep it pushing fellas 💪🏿
Thank you Wilder !!!!!!
Definitely an amazing episode, and learned so much about Wilder even myself through some of his experiences that he opened up about.
Thank you for this interview and all the others, I have gotten to know your guest on another level. Keep killing it.
Thank you for praising your father and preaching about the importance of having a father in your life
Ryan Clark is very good with what he does. He navigates very well and the mix of all three is just right.
Haven’t watched every single Pivot episode but that intro was crazy 😂
Deontay giving speeches every time he answers a question lol i love it
What I love about The Pivot is the insights you give us all. Changes perspectives of those that come with an open mind. I’ve learned so much about people and processes. I’m a BUSY man but when I sit down to watch something this is the first thing that comes to mind. Thank you!
“Judged by the color you are & not the characteristics you possess” 🎯
These guys have done it again. In the words of my favorite DJ "another one". Yet another great guest and episode of my favorite podcast.
Wow wow wow wow, I cried, I laughed, oh my, respect to you guys, and D Wilder, you are the man! Luv from Ghana 🇬🇭
When you apply knowledge to life you become wise!
Lord protect this Black Man! So inspirational…
Who in their right mind gonna run up on Wilder!?
Do your thing this weekend Wilder!!! Much love!!
Wow this what i am talking about my favorite boxer with my favorite pod with how deep wilder gets this gonna be a good one
I look up to this man, I took notice of Wilder when he did that till this day interview, when I heard him talk that, reminded me of Muhammed Ali. For me it's how you behave in and out the ring. Long live his reign wishing this young lion the best.
Absolutely dope and inspiring convo. Been a Wilder boxing fan but he’s an even better man/Dad. Real one to the core 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Couldn’t agree more about him being a great dad. Dude started this journey to better his daughters journey. What a dude

D*** he said a mouth full regarding peace & happiness when faced with difficult times! Wow! I’ve always felt the very same way no matter what happens in this life time I feel good about it ALL! I don’t waste energy on events i cant change. And age does not bring forth wisdom but life teaches you to embrace change
I love that adage about the heart controlling the body and not the mind! That really got me motivated to attack the rest of the troubles that come my way!!
Deontay is wild as hell. He's smart but I can tell that man will snap quick as hell on somebody.
Now this was a dope ass interview. Learned alot about Wilder. St8 🔥🔥🔥
“I’m soaking in my happiness and my peace.” Deontay Wilder Yeah I’m using that.
DW sounding like he wanna punch Chan for a min there!!! My dude gets fired up lol, but I'll forever be a fan!! BOOOMMMMBBBBB SQUAD!!!! 👊
Edit: until a few mins later when Chan hit him with the "bro u so technical...... why dont u pull out!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 D about fell out of his chair
Wilder is mad he lost his undefeated titled. However what he must realize is that loss gave him the ultimate respect from boxing fans .
How in the hell are they getting all these great people!!!!!????? When y’all left there, I pivoted also!!!!
BROO!!!! Y’all clutch for this !!!!
This one of my favorite pivots interview I love Deontay Wilder as a man ,father & husband. I hope he gets all the desire oh his heart ❤
Wow…. When the guest does 97% of the talkin, that’s an interviewer’s dream. There is this feeling that guests can’t wait to get on this show just to unwind and be themselves….. that says a lot about the hosts! Deontay “ain’t from Houston, but he Rap-A-Lot”! Amazing interview fellas!
This show is GOATED keep going OG's , much from a young cat soakin all this game up🙏🏾
"Master Charmin's..." 😂😂😂
This is the best sports podcast hands down !!!!
Channing face lit up when D was talking bout that medicine and journey. 🤣🤣🤣
The moon smiled at me. I charged a car with my bare hands. Boy Kevin Gates and Wilder have the wildest stories known to man. Folk legends. lol.
