City Center killed Mazza Gallerie and CC Pavilion when it opened I. 2015. You did not discuss the 4th mall, the Collection, on the northeast corner of the Wisconsin - Western Ave intersection. I used to live across the street and it was the first mall to show high vacancy. I moved to the residential neighborhood south of Mazza and it was holding on until COVID hit. CC Pavilion was the second mall in the neighborhood affected by declining foot traffic in the FH neighborhood. Wisconsin Place has also experienced low occupancy rates as well.
Another great video Sal. My family and I stayed at the Embassy Suites there in 2015 and had a fantastic time, we really enjoyed being able to take the Metro into DC and the attractions there. It’s sad to see it empty like it is now, thanks for all the great videos, I really enjoy them.
That Woodies was lovely. Behind Mazza Gallerie there was a fantastic Lord & Taylor as well, which had a little restaurant in it for many years. It, too, was a victim of COVID, shuttering within the past year (Lord & Taylor-the Birdcage restaurant within it closed some years earlier.)
@@allysonalt5291 Loyd and Taylor of course closed many, many stores around the country. The local mall had one which closed in the early spring. Now with Sears also gone, just JC Penny and Macy's are left. This was where two mall combined into one, with lots of excess retail space. @@iworkout6912 the Giant grocery store here is being replaced by an Amazon grocery....and the other grocery store in the same neighborhood is a Whole Foods, also owned by Amazon. So basically we have the same store, two blocks apart. Seems like an odd choice to me.
I remember when that shopping area was at its prime: Mazda Gallerie had a lovely Neiman Marcus, and some local luxury boutiques and a shoe store “Stephanie Kelian” which had the most exotic designer shoes. Lord & Taylor was in the back, and there was a Woodward & Lothrop where the Bloomingdale’s is… then there was an Issey Miyake boutique across from Neimans, and then down the street was a Gianni Versace boutique and Gucci and YSL was further down before closing out the area with a Saks. That 80s and early 90s era had some of the best shopping in DC area history!!!
I wandered into a Neiman Marcus once (not that location) because I was killing time waiting for a friend. I thought maybe I could buy a lipstick at the makeup counter. When I reached for my credit card, they said they didn’t accept credit cards, but I could open a NM account. I wasn’t looking for another card, I just wanted to buy one lipstick! I didn’t buy the lipstick and walked out.
Just rewatching this and teary eyed when you exited to Wisconsin Ave., with Mazza Galerie across the street. It is now, sadly, just an open lot. Such great memories of shopping in both spaces, but especially Mazza.
My family stayed at that Embassy Suites in like '96, I think. I remember everything feeling VERY FANCY, and hearing that the mall next door was even fancier (so fancy that we didn't even go). Cool to finally see a place I've been!
I used to go to these malls on the metro all the time. I just liked walking around them. There is also a similar on near pentagon city off the mall to. It was dead too, not been there in years.
I can go on and on about this place and how much I loved it. I had swimming lessons here. I spent every Thursday ages 5 - 10 here. I pray it gets better.
Within Sydney, Australia at Town Hall Station, a major station in Sydney where it provides underground connections to three shopping malls were at the northern end there are two "A" Class malls managed and owned by Vicinity Centers named "The Galeries" a modern mall and "QVB" a heritage mall within the heratige listed Queen Victoria Building while at the southern end there is one "B" Class mall managed by Colliers named "Town Hall Square" a modern mall as well. All three malls are thriving, both pre-and-post COVID-19 pandemic. This goes to show how Australian retail spaces are planned, designed, built, managed and operated differently without ever being over saturated with malls of the same class and caliber but diverse yet suitable for the area, demography and target audience.
Oh man, did an art festival in 2019 that took place at the shops at Wisconsin Place. Such a weird contrast, but it worked. Didn’t realize until about minute 11 that it was the same place…
Oh, and talking about small children... My kid got her head stuck in a bridge railing over a water feature at Embassy Suites..! I pulled the bars apart just enough to get her "un-stuck". Got a free stay out if it too.!
Amazing! I lived at the embassy suites for almost 6 months in 1995 when I was 6 years old. Can still remember buying a VHS copy of Hocus Pocus at a book store on the ground level and watching it over and over in the hotel room. Cheers for the nostalgia!! xD
Another work of art as usual. Definitely among my favorite episodes. As an added bonus, I'm now a rice master chef with my trusted microwave at my side. :)
Nordstrom rack closed last month. I was at the fixture sale. I wonder if TJ Maxx will move in to either that space or the former World Market space once Mazza Gallerie is closed down. I think this mall has a lot of potential but not with traditional chain retail. More food options, independent shops, and entertainment businesses (like escape rooms) might be in order. By the way, Ballston Quarter might make an good expedition. It shows how to reposition a mall like this (and how not to, as they already have a high vacancy rate) and there is a lot of interesting history there.
Sal, I’m so glad I watched your vid. Now, when I’m really, really stoned and get the munchies, I’ll know exactly how to make the “rice stuff in that thing” Thank You.
That kid was lucky he didn't die going through the rails. Another kid in 2011 was not so lucky when he ran from his mother, grabbed the down escalator railing on the wrong side, fit through the 6 inch gap between it, and the railing surrounding the escalators. Unfortunately, he lost his grip high up, and fell over 15 feet into a glass display case. Unfortunately, the kid died soon after the fall (Sears, Auburn Mall, Auburn, MA). PS: Don't feel bad about losing your car in a sprawling parking garage. I had that happen at Providence Place (Providence, RI). I knew where it was, but the sprawling maze of bridges, and ramps, made it hard to get to, and I also resorted to the "Lock" button to sound the horn to home onto it. Unlike you, I didn't make it in time, and had to pay more.

Indianapolis has a very similar structure involving the Embassy Suites hotel in the city. Claypool Court is a tiny mall with maybe 50,000 of retail space, but is attached to Circle Centre mall which is a massive mall in the city. Anyway, the first floors of the Embassy Suites house this small mall, which used to have an Old Navy and other shops. Now it is mostly restaurants. I used to drive down with the family from PA on Friday nite, stay at the Embassy Suites and then hit the mall for sales on Saturday morning. So sad to see the decline...
I *loved* Georgetown Park as a kid. I thought it was incredibly classy. I was so bummed when I went back to DC as an adult and it was gone. Also, would you ever consider doing a video on Crystal City Underground? It’s the weirdest mini mall in Arlington.
Check out Sal’s ExLog 75 from October 31, 2020 to see his video on Crystal City Underground in Arlington, VA. As always, he does an excellent job of documenting this dead mall.
Chevy Chase (MD) had a bank named Chevy Chase Bank. After I moved to the area, somebody said they banked with Chevy Chase. I said, “Huh? They named a bank after Chevy Chase?” I was thinking the actor/comedian.
Always a great job! Love your work and love how you tesearch and really get into detail about sellers and buyers and if it will be saved or demolished. Always great info! ❤️❤️

at 19:33, that used to be a fancy restaurant, Range, run by one of the Voltaggio brothers. There was a lunch spot on the bottom floor connected to it, called...uh, Lunchbox? There also used to be a Bubbles hair salon as you 1st came up the escalators on the left.
yes, it was lunchbox! i only went once when i was working at geico and was, uh, unimpressed. the only stores worth going to on that stretch were nordstrom rack, marshalls, and tj maxx lmao
They really need to make these mall spaces with residential real-estate apartments and condos., they need permanent foot traffic and places like this will thrive
It doesn't make a lot of sense converting these old malls to apartments. Most of these dead malls are in buildings already so old that it's actually cheaper and way less of a headache to demolish them and build new than refurbishing and converting them
And they wonder why we called it barf-aroni as kids! The product Chevy Chase was hawking lasted about as long as the commercial did. Or that mall. I only wish Rice A Roni had lasted about as long.

holy shit sal, i worked at the geico office catty corner to mazza gallerie for two years and was JUST talking with my partner last week about how i hoped you'd cover the chevy chase pavilion soon. this is amazing. thank you.
@@marciasmithanderson4325 awesome, thank you!
So glad I found this!!!! Love your content!!!
Thanks so much, Cheyann!
Your videos are such a treat.
This is so shocking for me to see. I went to the Pavilion once and I remember that place being packed to the point I was ready to leave within 5 minutes. Now it is so empty....and clearly dying....
Oh sweet, the old payphones are still there (8:17 or so)! I thought they were gone.
"lest they be moistened by its grotesqueries..." BEST. LINE. EVER. Sal. I spit Mt. Dew on my computer screen. I always watch to the end of every video, because a) I'm an 80's mall rat and b) who wants to change missing out on phrases like that!
This guy does not know how to make rice in the microwave!!! That was hilarious!!! He put a plastic knife in there with it!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
At that part I was thinking WTF?
Asian here. Insta-rice is even HARDER to make than normal rice!
I’m Canadian married to an Asian. (filipina). I wouldn’t dare suggest instant rice here!
Excellent idea to do this recap.
Your mall pa lady brightens my day
Good vid mate
I love your videos Sal! Thank you for all that you do!
I appreciate the kind words!!
OMFG - PA Lady has been hitting the hooch, again!
Great video. Definitely worth the wait
at 19:33, that used to be a fancy restaurant, Range, run by one of the Voltaggio brothers. There was a lunch spot on the bottom floor connected to it, called...uh, Lunchbox? There also used to be a Bubbles hair salon as you 1st came up the escalators on the left.
Ah, there was a Steinmart here for a short while, too.
yes, it was lunchbox! i only went once when i was working at geico and was, uh, unimpressed. the only stores worth going to on that stretch were nordstrom rack, marshalls, and tj maxx lmao
They really need to make these mall spaces with residential real-estate apartments and condos., they need permanent foot traffic and places like this will thrive
It doesn't make a lot of sense converting these old malls to apartments. Most of these dead malls are in buildings already so old that it's actually cheaper and way less of a headache to demolish them and build new than refurbishing and converting them
Agreed.
@@sal It would have to be done in a brand new mall that just failed immediately. There's not a lot of those, if any as far as I know.
And they wonder why we called it barf-aroni as kids! The product Chevy Chase was hawking lasted about as long as the commercial did. Or that mall. I only wish Rice A Roni had lasted about as long.
I really hope they give new life to this mall because it's would be sad to see if they don't do anything to give back life and update
Great video -- sound is much improved (I can hear you!). Thanx much!!
THIS COUNTRY IS CURSED. I Shopped at All these Beautiful , Gorgeous ,Great and Fabulous Places,. And they All Decline and Die. I Don't Understand why. Harbor Place, White Flint Mall, Landmark, Gaithersburg Mall, Mazza Galleria, Chevy Chase Pavillion, Georgetown Park , Springfield Mall, Laurel Mall, Burtonsville Shopping Center, Buchanan Mall, and the Crystal City Underground. Thriving, VERY BIZZY then BUST. 💙💖🇺🇸 GOD BLESS YOU! Thank You for your Hard Work and Videos. Much Appreciated. 😻✈️
I worked a CCP from construction top out. Opening was rushed to catch Christmas shopping. I left when the developer gave up stock in a cash call. Seems it was always on the margin.
Cheesecake Factory did gangbusters in those days.
I'm late to the party, but once again, a great production. Plus, anything with a Cheesecake Factory is cool in my books.
This stretch of Wisconsin Avenue was always happening and busy both with shoppers on foot and cars. So much bastard traffic. It's actually picking up a bit now (aka, getting busy on that stretch). Haven't visited Mazza or Chevy Chase Pavilion in a long while so thanks for taking the journey. I look forward to your tour of Ellsworth Place, which is not far from where I live. That place is... interesting...
I know a lady (wifes friend) named her dog after nieman markus. she LOVES that store so much. "its the ONLY place i shop". NO. she cant afford it.
They have talked about our mall in Onalaska, Wi being turned into apartments.. I thought that was a oddball idea.. but to have you mention that others on here may have also mentioned it.. Very interesting.
Now Embassy Suits is owned by Hilton Hotels
Yep.
I've stayed at the Embassy Suites in the CC Pavilion. It was a nice hotel!! Too bad to see this area go down like that. Hopefully it will come back around.
I spent far too long waiting for him to explain how an actor got involved in a mall to the extent of having it named after him...... then I realised.
Lol hey is that rice clip from that show Dr. Steve Brule??
Even in its "heyday", this mall was just hohum.
I'm telling my kids Marna is the 5th Golden Girl
Also Steven Reed: The Next Iron Chef
Most likely Chef Mic, I mean Steven, is a contender for America's Worst Cook... (wonder how long he can stand Chef Anne Burrell)
Hahaha!!!
Steven is dead
@@MBCMurrayPlaysRL - never realized Steven "didn't realize his dream" of facing "the wrath of Chef Anne Burrell"...
The way America is going you're going to look back on 2020 like it was the good old days.
Not really.
Gonna be by DC next week, hoping to make it to the triple throng.
I don't get how investors would but a failing Mall for £97 million ,unless the Land is worth more
Congrats on being fully vaxed. I'm 12 days away from dose 2 here myself, knock on wood. Hope to have my next gig and be back as a Patreon supporter soon because your approach to content is quite unique. I spent a couple years in DC in the late 1990s, so have enjoyed the DC-area coverage.
Loved your brief appearance, Sal! It was very Hitchcock-esque! And the tongue-yodelers? One of the creepiest things EVER in any vid...maybe it's my Jewishness coming out of me, but it made me think of Nazi-Germany...go figure. Love you, bro!
Did Chevy Chase ever shop at Chevy Chase pavilion?
He did during his summer vacation. But they wouldn’t let him in with the dead woman strapped to the roof.
Well there's your problem... the parking garage isn't tall enough for all the lifted trucks! When I go to my local mall here in Florida that's all that's in the parking lot, lifted club cabs on 24 inch rims.
That would be “Hillbilly Acres Mall” , wouldn’t it?
It died when they removed the food court IMO. I lived there then and stopped going there when they did that.
