James Toney is possibly the greatest technical boxer from the past 40 years, i think it helped a lot he moved up in weight as his discipline was awful, i remember Eddie Futch once saying he always said he wanted to fight at Heavyweight, and this was when he was a middleweight. Just an expert boxer who could have beaten most fighters when he was on his game.

John Ruiz was just near the last of a 25 year long list of guys who Don King somehow got one of boxing's sanctioning bodies to recognize as a "World Heavyweight Champion." Had he been fighting pre-1980, Ruiz is a "gatekeeper" at best. Never deserved a title shot let alone holding even the "We Belt Anybody" strap two, three, or however many times they handed it over to him.

James Toney was technically a thing of beauty, he could stay in the pocket and work all day, both elusive using the philly shell and counter punching until the cows come home. Peds of any sort do not teach those skills, those skills are hard earnt in the ring where James was at home for sure.
Remember British champ Richie Woodall says he visited a gym in the USA and James was there working the bag whilst glugging on a 2ltr bottle of Cola!

Have to play the d-vil's advocate here with James Toney and John Ruiz.
James Toney was a tallent in boxing that was unique. Toney was skilled, tough, gifted, ring inteligent and in the weight divisions MW to LH a KO artist...but to much lazines and hard to maintain his dicipline took away so much potential greatness he could have achieved other-wise.
    - He never went in any weight division to unify for the undisputed crown. IBF was his only world title belt in 3x classes.
His very best open-window moment was in the cruiserweights where there had not been a dominant, unified champion since 1988, and Toney after the Jirov fight could have gotten any unification fight due to his market value.
    - Toney balloned up- and down in weight so much it took a tool in his speed and reflexes, and being a small guy fighting bigger men, that speed and movement flow would have made him taking less big punches.
    - Toney was never a real HW material and only had his moment in a record weak HW era, never had to fight the true elites,;
Lennox Lewis, Vitali or Wladimir Klitschko, and Toney even twice declined a title fight with Wladimir in 2006 & 2007.
    - Toney has in his career been caught with illegal substances 3x times (!), so that makes a question of how many possible fights he could have used that as well? 3 TIMES is hard to ignore.

My favorite all-time boxer. I drove to an indian casino in the middle of bf nowhere to watch him fight Jirov, it was a masterclass. Some electric guy nicknamed the Ghost fought on the undercard too that night, kinda interesting.

If anyone here ever met James Toney, you'd know he was far more arrogant person than John Ruiz. I Remember he was gifted a decision over Dave Tiberi. Dave wasn't as good as James but he won that night

The hugger saying he is the best is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. You were not even good

  • @JohnTorres-vd3tz

John Ruiz was a humble, soft spoken man.
James Toney was a hugging cheater.
    Toney used illegal strategic hugs.
Incidental hugs happen but strategic hugs are intentional rules breaking.

True story, John Ruiz was my next door neighbor. He also coached Pop Warner for the Peewee guys just below my squad. When he beat holyfield, the whole city blew up

James Tony may have actually been the most technically gifted boxer to have ever fought in the heavyweight division if not all of boxing.

Don't know if I'd generally describe Ruiz as arrogant, but his style's so annoying that it's enjoyable watching him get beat.
