I think the notion “not to photograph government buildings” pertains to China where you are prohibited to take pictures of the military and some government buildings.
I lived in Russia through all my life and traveled through out the country and never encountered any problems with taking pictures of buildings or whatever.
Yes there are some forbidden zones but ordinary tourist would never be there.
Besides Uber there are other options like the Apps Yandex Taxi or Get Taxi which are even cheaper. The trip from the Airport to the downtown would cost about 1000 rubles ($16).
And thank you for vindicating our country’s safety. Moscow and Saint Petersburg statistically are much safer than NY and to tenfold safer than Chicago.

Антон Деч in April 2018 Uber was bought by Yandex, so it really doesn’t matter which app they used. Now you can’t use the international Uber app. You have to download Uber Russian. The problem is you can only download this app through the Russian iTunes Store (idk for google play and Samsung). In Moscow it’s so much cheaper to buy a transportation card called Troyka. The fair costs 38 rub. In SPb you can buy Podorozhnik and you can use it on 3 types of transportation (metro, gov on ground, and commercial on ground transportation). Surprisingly, Saint Petersburg’s fair is more expensive, but the distance between stops is shorter than Moscow. As for Gett taxi it really depends on the time and location. Sometimes it’s cheaper than Yandex.Taxi, but mostly it’s not. Honestly SPb and Moscow have so many options of transportation that will get you to any part of the city, that it’s not a problem compared to other countries.

hey! I'm visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg this September, could you tell me how to travel from the airport to the city? Is there a convenient connectivity from the airport to the city and how? what would you recommend?

    • @MsRita1994

Ranjit Godbole hey! Personally i use taxi most of the time(cost around 15 euros but make sure you call for it though an app called yandex taxi and not just go with the cars outfront they will charge you more for sure) another way is a speed train called aero express you can find signs how to get to it in all of the airports(in English so it’s quite simple) it goes to the train station in the city center and costs around 7 euros. The ride takes about half in hour(with taxi sometimes it’s around 2 hours so be aware of that if you need to get somewhere faster) and i know that there are some buses too but i never used them so have no idea how they work😀 have a good trip and if you need any advice you can contact me!

I was in St Petersburg for 5 weeks and I felt safer there than I do here in Winnipeg 😂. Peterhof and Catherine's Palace are a must. I spent days wandering around in the Hermitage, if you have an ISIC card entrance to a lot of places is either free or at least they give you 50% off. Georgian cuisine was absolutely my favourite out of everything I tried there.

Russia was one of my favourite places to go.
Didn't get questioned anywhere, locals were happy to help guide me (learn a bit of Russian first, a little goes a long way), the police were polite and courteous.
In the Ukraine I was threatened by a Neo-Nazi gang, in Estonia I was asked for my papers multiple times, and I was sidelined for questioning in Switzerland (until I produced my British Passport).
My biggest gripe about Russia is the language barrier though. Between my shitty Russian and the locals' shitty English, I ended up on the wrong train... So I didn't get to Kubinka.
I'd happily go back to Russia, but the visa process holds me back.

    • @Rye_Toast

We had a rather scary border crossing into Estonia from Russia, our tour bus was our tour group from the US along with another tour group from Canada that they decided to pair with us for the whole trip. During my entire stay in Russia I felt welcomed and had lots of curious people talk to me, I was actually a little worried at that border crossing though. They had the scariest looking woman dealing with us directly, she would walk through the bus several times asking each of us questions, then they made all of us get off but we had to leave all of our personal items on board while they searched the bus (meaning our purses, etc... no anxiety there, no), then they let us back on. Our group leaders and our tour guide was inside the checkpoint office through all of this, we didn't see them for almost an hour and the whole process took almost 2 hours. Then they made us all get off the bus again WITH our luggage, have it scanned and go sit in a holding room. No one would tell us what was going on and we never found out why we were held there (even later into the trip when we asked, we just let it go) but the looks on our group leaders and tour guide's face didn't lead me to think this was normal. Something had to be out of place, maybe some paperwork or something, other buses came and went through the checkpoint just fine.
Maybe it tarnished my feelings of the country but I felt watched when I was there, I did manage to enjoy Tallinn and the locals (especially the younger people) were very friendly, but that border crossing was scary. I'd love to explore more of Tallinn but I don't know....

You can't get mad over something like that happening because it's kind of your fault.
No, Moscow is definitely more racist that StPetersburg. StPetersburg is pretty much like Sweden in terms of popular opinion. It's a aristocratic rich city far from the Populated area of Russia (Which is Moscow and South of Moscow, you know - where all us regular people live). StPetersburg is basically where all Russian rich kids come to hang out so you can imagine it's pretty liberal.

St Petersburg does have an unpredictable weather, for which it is know in Russia. It is a seaside city. Most residents carry an umbrella even if there was a clear sky in the morning which is rare. Basically, summer weather there is quite like in London. Moscow is a continental city so it doesn't really have such problems.
Regarding visiting churches, I would add to the scarf that men should cover their legs with pants, so no shorts are allowed even if it's hot outside.

@@globalpower6967 Yes, I visited many times from 1976 on and people dressed more formally, always leather polished shoe, women in high heels, in the winter the women and teen girls often had mink coats. Going to a play or ballet even the little kids dressed up, like they did on September 1, School Day. Russians were not poor during the USSR, they were middle class but almost everyone got a similar income and everything was very subsidized. A family could fly to Sochi or Crimea on the world's largest airline then, Aeroflot and stay in a health resort for 6 rubles each. The average salary was 400 rubles which was pegged to the dollar. The main thing lacking that frustrated people was limited choices in consumer items which were relatively expensive, like TVs and stereos might be in only a few models, Cars were bought then it was made so 18 months might lapse before delivery. There were 13 car manufacturers back then.
The people were really hurt by the rapid privatization that the US advisors pushed on the new government, and that made a whole class of crooks who stole state assets that could have been kept by the government and used to generate income to pay for services. Trillions of dollars in state assets were stolen and many of those crooks, called Oligarchs shifted the money to NYC and London banks and welcoming the crooks with instant passports and residency or citizenship as long as they brought the stolen money. The people lost everything, one day they had very secure lives and jobs all their lives and the next day broke, no job, no services, nothing worked. Russia was not poor, it had been raped by outside forces and inside crooks. It took the very rare administrative functionary appointed out of the blue to be interim president when Yeltsin suddenly resigned as president. Only a year later he was able to right the sinking ship and it has been one of the most impressive economic and social recoveries in history. Even with the US economy and propaganda war against Russia, the country keeps growing and improving.

Great video!! Do you think that for the future ones you could recomend vegan dishes or what you ate? That would be sooo helpful

    • @annach109
      @annach109 5 років тому +1

For vegan dishes you can try dumplings with potatoes (varenniki), there are some varieties of vegan pirozhki; for a lot of foods you can find vegan versions: ask for postnoie “постное”. There are vegan soups and vegan blini (kind of like crepes), and lots of interesting vegan salads (try the purple beetroot salad called vinigreat, a classic). You probably won’t have problems finding vegan options in most restaurants or cafeterias, because a significant part of the population observes religious fasts which prohibits meat and other animal derived products on Wednesdays and Fridays and several fasts during the year. the menus will probably have some markings indicating vegan and vegetarian options.
Russian foods to be careful with:
borscht can have a meat stock, or it can be vegan when made 100% from vegetables. It’s a good and tasty option but easy to mess up.
Avoid olivier salad since it always has meat and the mayo has eggs.
Although you won’t have a problem eating vegan in Russia, you will miss out on the majority of famous Russian cuisine items since the recipes often include meat or fish or dairy. Unfortunately there is no way to cook the majority of these foods without their non-vegan ingredients. But do enjoy the vegan foods!

Thank you for the interesting video! I live in Moscow and love it with all my heart .. And I even envy everyone who comes here for the first time) Moscow is so great and multifaceted - everything in it can be found and rediscovered again and again! My husband and I recently really wanted to change the situation, but we didn't want to go far, so we chose the Royal Zenith Hotel and paid off. The hotel is located in the protected area of Serebryany Bor, surrounded by pine trees and a beautiful view of the river. I was very pleased with the Spa complex on the territory of the hotel - after a working week, what you need. Friendly staff, delicious cuisine - we recommend!

When you say Russia is expensive its not correct at all. Maybe in Moscow and St.Petersburg and their city centers and tourist traps. But when you go to the countryside, small towns or Siberian cities they are cheaper than China. In Khabarovks and Kaliningrad there is like €3 hostels and in Irkutsk Ive met people from China who said that Irkutsk and Khabarovsk are cheaper than China. Its also old stereotype that "China is cheap".

    • @sarasays9883

I would say that st Petersburg isn’t that expensive at all. In comparison to England it’s sooo much cheaper. I paid for my flight and my hotel on nevksy for a week and it was £230 per person. If you go to canteens you get traditional food for about £1 per plate. You can go to popular restaurants that tourists go such as Tokyo City where you can get great deals on a lot of different dishes, you can also get three cocktails for 333 rubles which is about £4.

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 4 роки тому

Even in St Petersburg it is far lower cost for lodging and dining than Europe or US. Stop by any restaurant and see in their window if they have a business lunch. A 3-course Italian meal with drink and dessert at one chain Marchelli's, for example, is $5. Dinners can range from $5 to $100, but if you spend $15-20 it will be a $50-60 dinner in San Francisco. Fast food is around but it is not recommended, McD is only popular with tourists and children and for the same price going to real cafe or restaurant well get a much better meal. IF you must seek fast food, Try Stole' a chain of savory pies stuffed with chicken, salmon or stewed cabbage for less than a BigMac. Subway is the only western brand fast food that is decent price. There are 13,000 nice restaurants in St Petersburg with high-quality food, there is no excuse for junk food. Most of the pubs also have good food. The most popular pubs are Englis style, 300 or more in the city center. Then comes Irish, Spanish, Belgium and German. They are good places to meet locals who know English. They are populated by a younger audience than in the UK and also the majority are girls. Girls get together, 3-4 friends and go to pubs because they are social and fun places, even sports bars have more girls visiting than men. Typically last Friday night I want dancing in a crazy Russian style club,, very few of that type around, and the ratio between women and men was 3:1. The quality food in any of these places is really pretty good with creative menus and interesting dishes, but few are traditional Russian dishes, more international cuisine because St Petersburg was always a European style city, and the very first public restaurants to open right after the city was founded in 1703 were Italian. French and German soon after.

Hey Nadine! Thanks for the kind words about Russia, although I would worn all those going to the World Cup to watch out for the pick-pocketer, please keep an eye on your belongings and try not to go to the outskirts of the city (especially in Moscow) in the late hours. Otherwise, people are very nice and kind, younger generation tend to speak english, since in most high schools it's a compulsory class, although give them some time to get their thoughts together. Do not hesitate to ask people for help. Also, if you are travelling in a group of 2 or more people, Uber is an amazing way to get from the airport to your accommodation, since the fare is fixed. Please do not use those private drivers that try to lure you at the airport.

Thanks for this video. I live in St. Petersburg, and I really like it when people from other countries are convinced personally that the Russians are not so scary, and in Russia it is even safer than in many European countries. And of course, in Russia there is something to see.

Be sure to take care and always have your passport with you. While the stories of russian police harassing tourists are mostly false, the story of their notorious racist paranoia, sadly, is not. Be you turk, arabic or even a caucasian with a darker skin tone, the police might get in your face to double-check your id and bully you just because (and yeah, some of them are dumb/ignorant enough to mistake asian for darker-skinned caucasian), but as long as you have all the necessary documents on you, they will let you be.
Other than that, I hope you enjoy your trip and wish you safe travels!

Eugenia Bezrukova In a perfect world? Absolutely. Unfortunately, we do not live in one( Oftentimes, Moscow police officers (not all of them, granted, but still) do not see your nationality - just your skin color. My former classmate once almost got arrested simply for being out late at night "you're probably up to something". Hell, I was bornj and raised in Moscow city and even I got stopped randomly a couple of times, due to my distant hispanic heritage and very mildly tanned skin. It is wrong, sad and stupid, but it keeps happening.
