Can We Make It Run? Seized Rivarossi Blue Goose W/Bad Motor

  • Can we make this seized Rivarossi Blue Goose steam locomotive run again? I got this locomotive as a gift a while back and after testing it discovered that it didn't run. I had no idea why it wasn't getting power until noticing it was missing a brush, this however turned out to be the least of the problem since the motor was seized and corroded. I ended up replacing it with a $4 Ebay and am impressed with the results.

    Very smart move to refit this with a more modern can motor! The 1st generation motors can be troublesome, as you have already discovered. You can use small diameter plastic or rubber tubing to join the motor shaft to the gearbox, something a lot of the older steam and diesel models did from the factory! A more flexible coupling there will make the slow speed running smoother, too. Nice work getting this vintage model back up and running! Cheers!

    SMT - Since the motor was found to be rusty, I can't help but wonder if a previous owner had it on a basement layout that got flooded? It may not be a bad idea to inspect all the metal parts for signs of corrosion, when you disassemble the loco for lubrication. Then apply some WD40 and/or oil to those parts to arrest further corrosion.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  4 роки тому +5

    It’s the day I’ve been waiting for. Great job SMT! I look forward to seeing more work like this in the future. Instead of using a rail joiner for the replacement drive shaft you should try using fuel line tubing from RC cars. I'm always impressed with your ability to take apart these engines and put them back together and make them work. I have a Mantua- Tyco 1776 engine. I put it on my test track and ran it back and forth, it hasn't ran in quite a while. But I started to smell something in the engine. It's probably a quick fix for you, but does it just need oil or is it an engine problem. I figured that I would ask the expert in this matter. I always enjoy your recorded videos. But I'm sorry that I'm not able to catch any of your live streaming because of the random times that you make them. She's screaming for a good oil and wheel clean, besides that she looks good.
    I believe the front is loose because the shell and chassis were used for other hudsons, specifically the New York Central's streamlined dreyfuss hudsons (note how the firebox isn't flush to the streamline casing and instead sticks out a bit). They most likely kept the front end separate from the rest of the shell to be resourceful... Quite a clever choice. Chances are that the clips/glue on your model are loose or broken.
    I wonder what a Rivarossi NH I5 would have looked like... I know there's a Mehano one (I've got one in need of attention), but that's just a repaint of a Canadian Pacific royal hudson. The NH I5s and the ATSF Blue Goose (Geese?) are nearly the same locomotive under the hood... I have no idea why they didn't attempt them besides not receiving the go-ahead from whoever owned the rights to the design at the time.

    I actually found this engine on eBay but it’s missing a tender 😂 so idk if I could even get it to run, also it’s 89$ so I don’t know if it’s a good idea to try and buy it over all. But at least I know if needed I could repair it by seeing what you did here.

    Have you tried submerging the motor in white vinegar and let it soak a couple of days or so to dissolve the rust?? It might work.

    I bet when you do a live stream the first request for a locomotive is the blue goose.
