There's a group called 'The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem' that contributed heavily to the popularity of Irish folk music in the US, Canada and Australia in the 50's through the 80's. At one of their last concerts, they told a story about a young fan that would sort of follow them around. The young man liked to write new words to the tunes to their songs (which is actually a pretty common thing to do with Celtic music) and pitch it to them. One day he pitched a song to the tune of an old Irish song called 'Brennen On The Moore'. The song he pitched was about a gambler. The young man's name was Robert Zimmerman...better known as Bob Dylan! The song was Rambl'n Gambl'n Willie.
Bob Dylan's voice is raw and real ... that is part of the reason he so connects with his brilliant music. Love his voice.

The song was recorded in one take...with all its difects, for example you can hear the button of his jacket hitting the guitar strings... Talking about the harmonica...I love it, always!

You are the first reactor that I know of that has covered this. The harmonica is part of Dylan and is an essential of most of his music
If you throw his harmonica out the window, you are throwing Dylan out with it.
This LP was a throwaway from a quick deal with Asylum Records in order to coerce Columbia to meet his contract terms.
It was a three-LP deal with Asylum, and the other was a two-LP live LP. So while making money touring he recorded the shows and that was the LP.
Afterward he said that he'd forgot how to sing -- his singing was criticized on the live LP.
And this LP was panned -- he went into the studio, sloppily slapped some songs down -- not enough for a full LP, so it has two versions of one song.

If you're really interested becoming familiar with Bob Dylan, it's difficult to know WHERE to start; as he's been around so song and has employed SO many styles. For me, the 1965-1966 period is the most interesting: he recorded and released three albums in the span of about 15 months, the last of the three ("Blonde on Blonde") being a double album During this period, he transitioned from being a "folk" artist to a rock and roll artist, heavily influencing The Beatles.
I repeat a prior comment. Some people grew up thinking singing involves angelic voices and have trouble climbing out of that box. Folk music never really embraced such a foolish notion.
I've heard this song so many times and I have never been bothered by the harmonica. It's part of Dylan and it's normal.
Try 'It's alright ma' (I'm only bleeding)'. Rap fans are astounded by it.
That's a pretty good comment you made on his "voice." I think the harmonic may have been distorted a little by the recording. But it's a part of Dylan's song list as others have said.
This is an interesting one. Planet Waves was in '74 and he was playing with The Band, and The Basement Tapes would follow in '75. I wonder if the sort of 'loose' playing that he did with The Band on The Basement Tapes was kind of showing through here, and that's what she was picking up with his harmonica playing. They always sounded very raw to me, when they played together. There's definitely some more melodic harmonica playing in other songs.
The Basement Tapes were recorded in 1967, though, so I think it's mostly just how they tended to play together.

With respect to the harmonica playing, it must be noted that this song was a complete live take (in the studio): you can hear the buttons of his shirt scraping against the body of the guitar). Also, insofar as the track is completely solo, he's playing the harmonica with a neck brace, which would likely account for the less than controlled (and, perhaps, less than compelling) harmonica playing. He was looking for a raw, emotional take (as his marriage was, sadly) falling apart), and he got it.
I really appreciate your reactions. I’ve seen a few other trained singer’s feel the need to apply their knowledge to songs where it just isn’t as relevant. You found the value, and simply looked past where that particular skill set is unnecessary. Well done.
For a great example of how a voice with feeling can be more appropriate than a well trained voice, consider Tom Waits melancholic masterpiece Tom Traubert’s Blues, made profoundly more bland by the highly skilled Rod Stewart.

Saw Bob play in Ames Iowa one time, first song he comes out and sits on a stool witk just guitar and harmonica. Starts to play guitar, adds harmonica, and trys to back away from the harmonica on the holder that gie6s arond his neck. Hes leaning back staring at it, takes it out and flips it over, and keeps going. Oops.
Not my favorite Dylan song and maybe I'm weird but I have always enjoyed his off the wall stuff.
That was one of Dylan's better harmonica breaks to my ears. Somehow his harp playing works, but I don't know how, it's not in any way traditionally musical.

Most of the time I like his harmonica, but he was definitely having an off day. I suspect he hadn't decided what he was going to do with it yet, that this was an early take, but he liked everything else in the take and used it on the album.
I think the harmonica got a bit better as this song went along.

i love Dylan, but I agree the harmonica can be like scraping across the blackboard. John Wesley Harding album in particular. Strangely live seems to work better.
A very deep track indeed. He hastily recorded this and threw it on as the last song to his first album of original songs in 4 years. Dylan has always recorded in a very raw and authentic way. This track has his shirt buttons rubbing against the guitar. He feels too many takes ruins the spirit of the recording. He leaves in music mistakes, bad tuning, verbal mistakes all in the name of authenticity. His recordings are just that, a record of a live performance in the studio warts and all.
Very obscure song to begin with. Try "Like A Rolling Stone".
If you his harmonica playing on this song, you may have a hard time enjoying most of his songs, as the harmonica is prevalent of most of them.
Bob Dylan has so many great songs that have unique vocals, rhythm, and some of the greatest lyrics ever written. This song is okay for expressing feelings for a partner, but otherwise mediocre in every way. I understand that people have different tastes, and that you react to what people sponsor. I just hope that you have a chance to hear or react to his other songs.
It's not mediocre, it's brilliantly passionate, rough-and-ready but fantastic
