He is a great poet and songwriter-2016 Nobel Prize for poetry and literature.
The song seemed like a prophecy as bob was becoming Mr tambourine man embarking on a journey he knew not where it would lead ,as we came following him, enthralled by the stream of musical creativity and often wisdom coming from his mouth
Don’t know about you but Bob Dylan is the greatest of all time.
Seen him perform 4 Times or so seen Joan Baez perform 3 times.................. today there is NOTHING ............... No thing to compare .......................... after U2 everthing went silent ...........maybe FAK and Brandi ................ but most nowadays artist sell themselves out before they are even born.................

He was one of the most truly individual and unique musicians there's ever been. Absolutely prolific, and focussed on his own path, able to ignore the expectations of others, and really do what was true to himself.

NOBODY was writing lyrics like this in 1964…almost a year later when this was officially released in 1965, the Beatles and everyone else started writing *real* & more thoughtful words, likewise, it opened the doors for people in rock to write words with more freedom about pretty much any subject they wanted, it no longer had to be a love song with “moon, June” swoony lyrics about puppy love ….this is the birth of a new kind of music deguised as “folk music”, played here at the nations biggest, annual folk festival …. The more I hear it, even 30 years later (I got into bob as a 19 year old in the mid-90’s), the more I’m sure this was the birth of the “psychadelic” lyrics/music of the era, which wouldn’t die until bob killed it with the more rootsy, country style music he started making in 1968, and once again, everyone pretty much followed him, the byrds made “sweetheart if the rodeo”, the Beatles did the white album and the “get back” sessions….Eric Clapton quit cream & did blind faith, but, the freedom these kind of lyrics ushered in never died, that freedom to write about any subject, in however vague , specific, surreal, or poetic way an artist wanted & it continues to this day, on that fact alone bob Dylan changed music…..bob was just special…..he’s so, so goat’ed & iconic for a reason. I’m really glad u chose this song, *and* this performance…..it wasn’t even a known song here, this might have been the first time it was public all played, im not 100% sure on that. Great reaction:)
I’m going to have to disagree. Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash were writing music like this as well as rambling Jack Elliott. I think what you mean is that nobody who was in the mainstream was writing thought broke in poetic lyrics like this, although Neil Young was starting to make a name from himself as well as Gordon Lightfoot a couple of years later, however, the young men who were between 15 and 20 were writing lyrics like this Dylan at 22 was only a couple of years older than these people. Indeed, he was about 10 years younger than rambling Jack Elliott and about 15 years younger than Woody got three, but there was a crop of poetic artist that were coming through at this time.
@@MustafaAshah-el9nc , I was really just parroting what Bobby Nuworth said in Scorsese’s “no direction home “ documentary….idk about any “15 year olds”, …um, yeah, cash had that crazy album about Native Americans, ive never heard it, I was born in 1976….im very highly familiar with hank Williams Sr and that he did talking blues type songs….i dont know, it was something Bob nuworth said and I guess I was taking his word for it….Neil young i think is kind of a moot point being that I don’t think he was there yet artistically in 1965, I have t delved Neil too, too hard to be honest…but, this tune was written in 1964 also, bob played it at Newport folk festival that July….& Ive been meaning for years to delve rambling Jack but never got around to it, so, I have no clue, if he really rambled, I’m sure he wrote some lengthy stuff….I think Nuworth (I know I’m spelling his name wrong) was referring to “it’s alright ma, I’m only bleeding”, & with that song it was bobs delivery and phrasing of the words and not just the words themselves that were revolutionary, the hip hop reactors who watch that song are just blown away by it….i dont know for sure because I don’t know what artists ur talking about , but I don’t know if anyone was on *that* it’s alright ma-level, that song is a dark masterpiece, & very unique….in the end I haven’t a clue, i wasnt around. I tend to think u have some interesting examples in mind tho….if u have any UA-cam links to these younger ppl, id check it out, for sure….I also know about the Fugs, who put William Blake poems to music, or “music”, in a song in their first album, they were very unique & on the cutting edge, swearing and stuff too (in 1965)…& I’ve heard the velvet underground actually recorded their first album with nico in 1965 but it wasn’t released until 1967…so, I mean, yeah, i dont know, lots of stuff going on in 1964 & 1965 New York .
@@MustafaAshah-el9nc , I always think of kerouac’s three poetry album too, the ones set to jazz….even tho the third had no music , but it was somehow the most rhythmic of the three….I used to own that box set and listed to it countless times.
@@vincentvancraig the point, I was trying to convey is whilst Dylan was 22 and he was writing this musical masterpiece. There were people a few years younger than him not influenced directly by him whose early unreleased work between the ages of 15 and 20 had a similar poetic, leaning and a rejection of modern or modern at the time rock ‘n’ roll music Chuck Berry was writing some interesting music that did link thematically to deal with poverty and relationship struggle but Johnny Cash was writing music like this in 1964 Leonard Cohen was doing poetry but experimenting with music, although he would not delve into music seriously for a few more years yet but rambling Jack Elliott had been writing music like this since 1952 rambling Jack Elliott is 93 years old and still alive still singing. He was called rambling Jack Elliott because he was always travelling and because he would between songs tell stories like a troubadour and Woody, three had been writing music like this since the 40s he wrote this land is your land. For example, Neil Young had been writing music and poetry since about 1960 and he didn’t find commercial success until later in the decade, but his poetic style was very independent from Bob Dylan, as you can see some of his unreleased work that went to auction, followed a similar vein just before this song was released, Dylan was just the person along with Joan Baez, who found commercial success in the very early 20s and helped catalyse a process that was already taking place
I think the first concert performance of this masterpiece was at ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL London 17/5/64 .which is also a wonderful performance. a full year before it came out on record
Dylan is the most amazing lyricist that has ever graced this earth, a few have come a little close on a couple of songs, but his amazing genre is just fantastic. It is true back in the 1960's you could hear a pin drop when Dylan performed, it was and still is, about the lyrics, no one comes close, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for

He wrote so many great songs. He was almost worshipped as a folk God in this time. So much so that when he picked up an electric guitar and sang with other instrumentalists, some of his fans and concert crowds were horrified and turned on him. But his writing was influential, and caused many to step up their song writing. The Beatles changed completely after listening to him, and we all know how influential they were. His style fed American folk and folk rock for years. Quite the Iconic troubadour. Anyway. Good to see you looking well. Hoping you remain so. In all that has been said about the lyricism of Bob, the melodic can not take a back seat. He has written some of the most enduring and beautiful melodies... Of all time.
Yeah - it's called a harmonica...he is the preeminent folk singer and lyricist in American history, a real poet. His songs are all amazing.

Happy New Year Rebeka! This is probably the version of this song I love the most, I watched it on a TV documentary of Bob Dylan. I remember that hearing and watching this particular performance was the first time I was so hypnotized by the lyrics.
People have different interpretations of what the lyrics mean, but most people think that Mr. Tambourine Man is a symbol for a source of inspiration, it can be a musical inspiration or an inspiration to follow a dream. Bob Dylan wrote lyrics like a poet writing poetry, this song in particular has surreal images and poetic fairy tale words that swim in your head while you listen to the song.
If you like storytelling songs, you absolutely should react to his "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts".
People thought Bob Dylan's song was about a drug experience, as the Tambourine Man puts the singer in a spell and takes him on a trip through an exotic, poetic landscape. In 1985, Bob insisted it was inspired by Bruce Langhorne, the folk musician who accompanied him on guitar during the recording of the song. "He had this gigantic tambourine," Dylan remembered. "It was as big as a wagon wheel. He was playing, and this vision of him playing this tambourine just stuck in my mind."

I had front row seats about 16 or 17 years ago. I heard he almost didn't come out I think he had stage fright or something. He is amazing live.

It’s funny u say that….it was quite a thing…when the Beatles played, the crowds were so loud they couldn’t hear themselves playing their loud electric instruments and the sound meters literally once measured the cheering and screaming to be as loud as a jet engine….,with Dylan, people sat as quiet as a mouse, in rapt attention like they were in church or something, it was insane, the unique phenomenon that he was…his charisma onstage was crazy, he didn’t act crazy like Jim Morrison, he didn’t scream , he didn’t have wild stage antics, he didn’t have wild dynamic guitar fretboard prowess and fireworks like Jimi Hendrix, bob Dylan just played & people payed attention….it’s one of bob’s many gifts….I totally get your observation tho, no doubt. I really loved this reaction & ur reaction style.

At this concert, Bob Dylan was introduced by another amazing folk artist and social activist, Pete Seeger. Please consider listening to some of his great recordings sometime. Btw, the folk fans at Newport felt Dylan betrayed them when, a year after this performance (1965), he changed from playing acoustic guitar to electric, and then in 1966 toured with the Hawks (later to be known as The Band) to fill out his distinctive folk-rock-bluegrass-country sound. (The Band were also influential, and wrote and recorded some great music - summed up in their last concert, turned into the movie The Last Waltz, that includes appearances by brilliant songwriters including Dylan, Neil Young (who also performs sometimes with acoustic guitar and harmonica), and Joni Mitchell.) Also, The Byrds had a major pop success with a cover of "Mister Tambourine Man" in 1965, the same year that The Beatles released the LP, Rubber Soul. Here is a link to their performance on the Ed Sullivan Show, a year or so after The Beatles made a breakthrough into the USA on the same TV show.

Somebody else mentioned Leonard Cohen in the comments, an incredible lyricist who also emerged into the folk rock scene in 1967 after first becoming known as a fine young poet from Montreal. Both Neil Young and Joni Mitchell moved to California from Canada in the 1960s, and while The Band included American musicians, it was mostly a group from Canada, too, before joining as Dylan's group of backing musicians in 1966.

At the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Bob intentionally pissed off the crowd by performing electric. He didn’t want to be confined by their boxes. It is worth watching to hear the crowd boo him when the year before he was their hero.

I think Bob uses the harmonica playing between verses to stay on track and keep the rythem and focus of the song going. It actually helps his singing. You can see him leaning towards the harmonica instinctively between verses, not always playing..

Sorry, I forgot two things here. The Beatles song that Dylan heard in 1964 on the radio that he was over came by was "I Want To Hold Your Hand"
Also, after The Beatles met Dylan in September, 1964, their next Lp, "Beatles For Sale" was released in December, 1964 not "Help" released in August,1965.
Even on "Beatles For Sale" though, you can hear Dylan's influence on Lennon on his track "I'm A Loser". That's Lennon doing Dylan right down to the lyrical style and delivery and even the harmonica. Give that a listen, really cool song. Lennon joked years later saying, " That's me doing Dylan better than Dylan". Such a typical funny John quote.

Ok. So Mr. Tambourine Man is a metaphor symbolizing the drug dealer and the narrator is Mr. Dylan himself, asking for a another fix. It is commonly referred as one of the first songs to incorporate euphemisms to mask the name of the actual drug(s) in question. Censorship was huge in the 60s and record companies wouldn't dare promote songs or albums that had blatantly subversive lyrics, nor would any radio station play recordings of that nature. The song is also related to transcending to a higher plateau, which, at times, can be achieved through the use of psychedelics and/or opiates. Have you ever heard of the song, Puff the Magic Dragon? Purple Haze? White Rabbit? What about the Popeye cartoon series where he would stuff spinach into his pipe?? The hippie movement juxtaposed with the beat poets of the day became the perfect recipe for the awesome music we still listen to today. Bob Dylan virtually championed the cause without knowing it. And if you don't believe me you can go ask Alice, when she's 10 feet tall.

Nope. A common interpretation but the song is much deeper than that interpretation
Dylan insisted it was not about drugs.
Words only have the meaning the mind receiving them reflects in them. Dylan is a master of words, but always leaves us free to reflect ourselves in them. I have never heard him explains his lyrics, presumably because of his awareness that others will inevitably interpret what he is saying based on their preconceptions. There is therefore no point in him doing so. That's just my perception though.
Ram Dass put it this way “The problem about words is that you might listen to them, and that would be a mistake. For all I'm doing is painting with words and the message that is being sent is non-verbal.......... Words exist because of meaning, once you've got the meaning you can forget the words."
As has been said a common interpretation of this song is that Mr Tambourine Man is a drug dealer. So that will be seen in the lyrics, by someone reflecting from that viewpoint. They was an awful lot of drug use going on at the time, so this was to be expected. Of course this can also be achieved by a Tambourine player.
However these words are interpreted, they seem to invoke a deep inner response in all who focus on them.

Wonderful reaction and Happy New Year. Bob Dylan is one of the greatest songwriters. His guitar and harmonica playing while singing is so impressive. Neil Young comes to mind as another artist that does this and is also a great songwriter. A young singer songwriter from Canada named Madison Galloway also plays guitar and harmonica and while she is obviously not the songwriter that Bob Dylan and Neil Young are, she is very talented.

As usual with great lyrics, have them ready to look at if you need, but don’t read them until you hear them first. The tune and lyrics are beautiful and powerful as always from Bob Dylan.
