- Lance Egan's Corn Fed Caddis is a fabulous caddis imitation. A great dry-fly on its own and it shines in a dry-dropper. This is a variation of his pattern. Spin some up and enjoy!

thank you for this tie. I have been tying for years but I gotta tell you, I always learn a lot from your videos. thanks again.
Awesome of you to say, Dennis. Appreciate you watching!
I really like your tying. You keep everything nice and thin. Keep the videos, very informative.
Thank you, Charles. Tight lines to you!
Love me the corned caddis 🎉❤
From one Cory to another....me too!
Thanks for sharing. Very helpful
You got it!
Patrón extraordinario y muy efectivo. Sencillo y proporcionado. Un placer seguir sus montajes. Saludos.
Muy amable de tu parte decirlo! Gracias!
Thanks for your tip re: proportions....I usually run out of space towards the end of tying a dry fly with multiple materials 😄....love the CDC head and half hitch + super glue finishing tip...thank you
Haha! Such a bummer when everything is going perfectly fine, then....there is no space left!
Great job with the video
Thanks so much Fred!
Great video. This is the exact way I this pattern, the only thing I do different is I use trigger point fibers for the visual
Appreciate it, Patrick. Love this bug. Thanks for watching!
I really like these. Just tied a dozen in 14 and 16. Still had plenty of squirrel dubbing from when I made Dave Whitlock's RFSH nymphs.
It’s a good one, Jerry. Hope they fish well for you!
great description! Nice work not crowding the head.
Thanks so much Martin!
Great pattern,I will try it on all types of water but i believe the CDC is the answer on flat water for picky trout. Thanks
Thanks Trout Man! It is a good one picky trout, esp when you size down. Appreciate you watching!
I haven’t tied this particular Caddis pattern but I do fish it often.
I’m not sure what you meant by the naturals being messy from the underside. I often pick them up and look at them to see what color body they are and whether they have eggs coming out. Caddis flies have a pretty slick profile from underneath. Probably you’re referring to the legs because their bodies are not furry looking.
You mentioned a problem you have when whip finishing if the head is steep. To avoid having the thread slip forward, you start from the front and wrap backwards, up the hill. This way, your thread will never slip. 😉
Cachi, I like the Dave Whitlock style of finishing dries. Nice and clean. Good enough for Dave, good enough for me! Really showing people that there are more ways to skin a cat. Appreciate you watching.
Nice😉
Thanks for watching, JIm.
Great video might have to give this tie a try! Question for you what kind of material clip do you have for your vise? Also do you like it. Thanks
It’s a Renzetti Material Clip. And yes, I do like it. Super handy. Appreciate it, Mike!
Great teaching in this video. Thanks! Do you use floatant with this fly? What kind do you like?
Thanks Stephen! I use Dry Magic. It’s made for CDC. Put it on when it’s dry, then after that I brush on Frog’s Fanny to dry off.
Gday from down under. How jealous are we of how blessed you guys are with your rivers and streams. Love the channel. Thank you for all your vids and advice and of course the flys. When you were making the caddis, at the end, making the head of the fly, you used two cdc feathers. Do you use the whole feathers by folding them in half and removing the stem in the clip or do you clip just one half of the feathers and remove the stem leaving the other halfs for another caddis? Hope that makes sense. Love your work
Gday, H2O! We are blessed with some really diverse and beautiful streams here.
I use half of the feathers and remove the stems. So you will be able to make 2 flies out of each feather. Tight lines to you, mate! Thank you so much for watching the channel.
@@OldDominionTroutBumthanks for getting back to me. Really appreciate it. Tight lines 😎👍
Nice video. I used to tie this but got lazy and use a “cdc and elk” nowadays instead.
That’s a good one too. Thanks for watching, Greg.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Yeah it’s really nice when the fish are picky and it is a very fast tie, can’t support as much weight as the corn fed caddis though in a dry dropper set up.
@@gregh9675 always good to have a couple of different caddis patterns in the box for sure.
Great tie. Around how many casts do you get per fly? You don’t dress the flies with anything, do you?
Thanks, Larry. I treat all CDC flies with Loon Lochsa just after I tie them. Once on the stream, they are ready to go. After each fish, rinse it in the water or after a few dunkings, squeeze the water out and dry it, then brush it with Frog's Fanny and they are good to go. You'll know when to dry them because it will start to sit lower on the water. Hope this helps.
New sub, you had me when you stated you like to stay true to the OG pattern. You can’t tie a variant if you can’t tie the original. Proportions are extremely important (as you stated). Learn the craft right and there’s no pattern or style of tying you can’t learn to master. Great fly and tutorial!👍🏻
Appreciate it, Jeff! Nice of you to say. Thanks so much for watching and the sub. Tight lines to you!
What kind of vice are you using? Renzetti? Like ur videos a lot! I am gonna get into more serious fly tying soon lol
Appreciate you watching! My vice is a Renzetti Traveler 2000. It's a great vise.
Hi Cory, thanks for all your videos. I bought a euro rod over winter and have watched a lot of videos but yours have been some of the most helpful. Right up there with Devin Olsen. I tied some of these up. How do you like to treat these/ what kind of floatant do you use on the water? Thanks again for all the great content and the inspiration to keep smoking cigars on the water lol.
Appreciate it, Joshua. Nice of you to say. I like Loon Lochsa. I pre-treat all of my CDC flies with this BEFORE I put them in my box. This way they are ready to go. Then make sure you get Frog's Fanny or something similar. When your fly gets wet, squeeze the water out with, then dry it with the Frog's Fanny. It will be ready to go. Watch this video here by Devin. Super helpful:

I'll keep the cigars going!!
Thank you!
Hi. Well done video. It supplements Lance's video of his fly in many respects. I'm curious where you source Jack Mickievics' squirrel dubbing. I did find one outfit so far, but they don't have the color you used for this fly. Thanks.
Appreciate it. Competitive Angler sells it. Jack just recently passed, so it may be harder to come by. Hopefully he has passed his recipes on.
Good looking fly. Do you tie your dropper to the eye or hookbend
Thanks Stuart. I use a dropper tag formed from a triple surgeon’s and tie my dry to the tag and dropper to the bottom. Appreciate you watching!
Are you throwing those on your euro rod as well? you mentioned the thin, euro leader, just wanted to see what rod you were using. And if euro, do you use a full mono set up? The reason I'm asking is because I use full mono for my ESN set up and have thrown a few dry flies but I'll admit it wasn't that fun. The dry-dropper on ESN may be better with the added weight.
I am throwing it on a euro rod. A 10ft 2wt. I use a thin .18mm Sempe straight leader to a 5x sighter. It will only throw dry-dropper. If I throw single dries, I switch over to a traditional weight forward line.
@@OldDominionTroutBum as always, thank you for the insights
Just subscribed to channel.
Awesome Michael. Appreciate the support!
Just found your channel. Like your technique. Are you located in the Old Dominion? (Virginia?)
Thanks, Matthew! I am located in the Old Dominion. Richmond to be exact.
Micro leader is a new term to me. Can you clarify? In my fishing, 4X is heavy, 5x more common, 6x is comfortable and I will even go to .0025 on the rare occasions when needed. Thanks.
Jerry, in euronymphing a micro leader is a thin leader running run from the fly line to the tippet. The leader is 4x and my tippet is anywhere from 6-7x. The tippet length is typically around 4-5 ft. Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum I see. Just recently started following you from a tip from my buddy, Bill Gunn. While we have fly fished 50+ years, we're finally going to try this euro nymphing. I've learned a ton from your videos. We fish a lot of the same areas. Is your leader straight 4X or tapered? Thanks.
Appreciate it, Jerry! My leader is not tapered…just straight 4x. Approx 18ft to my tippet ring, then I run my tippet. Thanks for subbing to my channel!
Nice variant in the pattern. I tied a few up in size 12
And they float well. What’s the largest bead you can float in your experience with these?? Thanks!!
Hey Chris. They will easily hold a 2.5. That is pretty much the heaviest I'll go with this pattern. Appreciate you watching!
@@OldDominionTroutBum thanks! You got any recs on patterns for supporting a 4.0 nymph? Thanks again.
👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Im trying to figure out what the visual post is.... I want to buy some, what else is it called? Thanks Cory.
Jerry, it’s Widow’s Web by Montana Fly Company. Good luck with the fly.
I’m trying to find the jack mickievicz dubbing but can’t seem to find it. If you don’t mind sharing where you got it. Thanks
Competitive Angler has a big assortment of Jack M. Performance Flies carries it as well.
With this style of buggy tie, is the effectiveness hampered by dressing the fly with floatant? This looks to be perfect for the freestone waters in my western waters, but the waters are a bit rough and wonder as to whether this will float well enough without floatant. Thanks.
Kevin, you have to make sure you are using floatant designed for CDC. Lochsa or Dry Magic is great stuff. Also get a powder brush on floatant to dry it off after you squeeze the water out. CDC floats like a cork. I am out west right now and it floats high.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Many thanks!!!
Ok, now I'm confused. You said you only use a 1/2 strand of the antron for the shuck but appeared to tie it in folded double and then cut??
James, I folded the front of it over just on the hook shank to tie it in because it gives a nice, blunt end for tying in and control. The end extending from the end of the hook is a 1/2 a strand. I didn't mention that on the video. Hope this clears it up for you. Tight lines.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks.!!
What sizes do you tie them in
Russell, I tie them in 16-12. My go to size is 14.
Cory, how small will you tie these?
Jeff, I tie these down to a 16.
Why a olive tail,it seems more like a tan caddis ?
I like the contrast, Russell. But you can use a tan or brown. They certainly will work.
@@OldDominionTroutBum tying some 16 s as we speek 👍
Hope they work well for you!
