Our chickens run around inside an electric fenced area so THAT is why the roost is open. The chickens are protected by the electric fence so nothing can get into their roost 👍🐔🐔🐔
It's never occurred to me to use an electric fence to keep animals 'out'... Would you mind sharing the spacings between each wire from the ground to keep foxes out.? 🙏🏽
I’ve used gumtree branches as chook perches for years, so much better for their feet. The only downside of using timber is that there are so many nooks and crannies for mites and bird lice to hide away and then attack the chooks. A couple of times a year I paint it all, perches included, with a mix of old olive oil and eucalyptus oil to keep them under control.
Interesting little trick, I'll take that thank you! my little trick is to spray 1 or 2 L of boiling water in those cracks and on those perches every time I clean up the coop. I did paint and gap fill the cracks in all the inside previously but it doesnt stop the mites coming back...
Gotta dust your chickens with diatomaceous earth and add it I to where they rolling. The dirt so they are Klinger anything that jumps on them, my dog had fleas that infested my house for almost a year, diatomaceous earth cured it all in 3 days no joke. And dust he bottom of your plants with it. Where they meet the soil
You can use sump oil too but fit chickens you should use flat surface or a really large branch i use old pallets that are perfect for them to rust on and cost nothing use dirt to clean them and scrape off have never had mites , burn if you do get mites but you should not with pallets and replace when necessary
@@pierrerestoux7360I like to use the ash from my fire or diatomaceous earth in the dustbaths and in the coops to keep the pests at bay. It works rather well
Just showed my husband. We are doing something similiar in Dandenong Ranges. Very enlightening, entertaining and love as always your photography and...music!
Thanks big bud, I liked the burnt wood for the no rot...ive adapted that to my fish cleaning table and sink plus all the hard wood, all of which i got from the local tip, including the screws. 🤣👏👏👏💥
We have had chickens and turkey in our upcycled coop and run! We love them! We have to have a run as we have so many foxes that if you have sandwiches and pop in to get a tea your sandwich is gone! We are now getting egg chickens I’m so excited! I love chickens they are epic, no only eggs or meat but they make fab composts
We were just discussing how we could change up the design of our chicken coop and were coming up with some ideas... really enjoyed this video thanks for the inspo as always 😊
I don´t know why but the music and font just takes me back to my childhood. It reminds me specifically of a tv-show I used to watch growing up here in Denmark, called Cirkeline. Thanks for sending me "Home"
Thanks for the tip on the stump burning!!! will come in handy for my new outdoor patio!! Love the open Chicken coop with no bottom..... Might have to build one of them too!!! Good to have you back making videos weedy!!!
Always Love your videos first thing in the morning Weedy, 3:55 am here in Komoka Ontario Canada. My wife is watching the Aussie Open upstairs, but.....I would rather watch your Artwork from your part of Australia. Thank You, and Take Care. 🙏
Hey Weedy, beautifull set up! One more thing you could add around this is straw inoculated with stropharia rugusoanulata (king stropharia). They do great in high nitrogen soils!
You need an impact driver. Look them up if you don’t know about them. They help you put screws in soo much better. Plus then if you need to pre drill something, you have that drill piece in, then you have your impact driver with the screw head. I’ve been planning a chicken coop for that long, I think I know what I want to do now 😊
Great timing David, I am in the process of planning a chook pen for my backyard. Being in suburbia I have to make it predator safe from mini foxie, Jack Russell/dachshund and a purebred dachshund that cohabit the backyard. All are very well fed none of the three have killed before but it is their breeds unfortunately. I am looking forward to having chickens in the garden a bit more self sufficient. Also in the near future also I am getting a flow hive as my garden has suffered from lack of pollination this summer. You and this channel are my inspiration to have a go after a lot of medical issues in the past and still ongoing. My good days I garden my bad days I plan and make a to do list also read and research.
I absolutely love your videos!! l The videography is so incredible. Keep up the awesome work, and I will continue to get inspiration and make positive changes on my land, hoping that someday I can provide the inspiration to others as you do now. Have a great day!!!
Rough tree branches great for chickens feet when roosting. Unfortunately also favoured by red legged earth mites. Non chemical control of mites, quickly zap with blow torch.
The carpet snakes are going to love it! The electric fence doesnt stop the carpet snakes they are at ground level (I have one on my chook pen at Terania Creek in the forest) stops the Goannas not the snakes. Maybe wire the bottom well with avery wire and put a door on the front you can close at night. 💜
@@TheWeedyGardenIs the electric poultry fencing being held up by star pickets or does it have its own pickets? Can you recommend any? I must say I love the whole concept!
Free except for screws, bolts, chainsaw, grinder, grinder disc, drill, several drill bits, jigsaw, circular saw, Stanley knife, spray paint 😋 The chooks will love it, wd
Hey weedy, nice work, shout out to all your viewers as well, I got two questions for you, 1. What your primary source of energy that you use out there all day in the heat, 2. How to make ginger beer?😊
I have a similar concept for mine. Bottomless coup so the poo falls straight down into deep woodchip litter. It’s a great system. No cleaning whatsoever!
It's good to coat the roost branches in sump oil to stop mites nibbling on their toes at night. Other type of oils probably work just as well. This is such a great chook shed, we'd have to close the bottom in though because rats like to get at our girls at night.
Beautiful work as always. Really enjoyed watching this with the offspring. Great tip on burning the ends of the poles, I didn't know about that yet. We have a ton of eucalyptus at our place too here in California too much really. It's great to figure out ways to use it other than firewood. Thanks for all of your efforts!
I was just busy building something for the girls too. Such a pleasure watching your videos! Definitely going to try and build a similar water system and that bridge with netting!
I like how you left the bottom of the coop open. That way, if a predator does enter the coop, the chickens can actually flee. Maybe one gets taken out, but the rest can follow their instincts and Get Out! Definitely copying that.
Hi first i love your videos very well edited. But more importantly i saw the clip of your bees all swarming on the outside of the hive and i wanted to let you know they do that when the hive is getting too hot try putting a shade over it so it doesn’t get sun afternoon
This is very entertaining video. Are you familiar with a show called MacGyver that aired years ago? lol I started to build a coop for my chickens but used a shipping container instead. Keep up the good work! Your videos are informative and entertaining.
Here in Northern California, the eucalyptus trees are a nuisance to the garden...the near by trees (20-30 feet away) sent shallow roots up into all of our beds completely compacting it and stealing our water/nutrients. When you cut the tree down it doesn’t die, it comes back even more vigorously 😵
hopefully this will help re felling... your gob/mouth should be less than 1/3 of the width the back cut being at least 2/3rds - and the hinge should be 10% again but both back from the join of the mouth and then also up 10% - so for a 10cm tree the hinge would be a 1cm x 1cm square...
Our chickens run around inside an electric fenced area so THAT is why the roost is open. The chickens are protected by the electric fence so nothing can get into their roost 👍🐔🐔🐔

Wow, I never knew about the charcoal thing for buried wood. I've got to try that.
Doesnt work in cold weather or if you need to avoid predators, but in you case its absolutely smart, out of the grid, what a nice idea! 😮👍
