Is the supression due to the compounds the larger trees release?
Good question... I personally think it is mainly genetics/light levels. But would be interesting to see some scientific research which no doubt exists.
Nitens seems to be our biomass champ. We’re in a wetter area than you apparently. Also had good luck with Californian redwood.
What do you plan to use your redwood trees for ?
