You should watch insidious 2010 it’s a good horror movie for scary cherry 🍒
I have to ask. Are you messaging people on Facebook.
This is set in New England, which was a colony of English settlers in the northeast of America.
❤❤
This movie proved that even a simple shot of a tree line can be terrifying just with the right soundtrack, shot length, context, it's kinda brilliant.
people don't know that America was extremely densely forested east of the Mississippi. the colonials would have felt exactly what we felt in the movie regarding the dark and foreboding forests that surrounded them.
'She really thinks a baby is in hell because its not baptized'
Yeah that was the general view of it at the time, same as the medieval era. They took that very seriously. Thats also why the witch took him in the first place. She was making a flying ointment, which according to the beliefs of the time, required the fat of an unbaptized baby, among other things
The irony being that the actual clergy did not believe that baptism of infants was required to avoid hell, but they let that belief ferment in the masses to drive more people to the church at the time.
Calvinism is a hell of a drug.

One of the best horror and witch movies of all time its spooky and dark and makes you feel the terror its incredible how good a movie can be with few people starring
And it was Eggers first movie, gawdayum
31:00 if you turn your movie brightness up you can see black Philip as a human whisper to her
😮😮
Didn't scroll through all the comments to see whether someone said this already, but the family are all totems of sin: Caleb is lust (his symptoms are pretty spot-on for syphilis, although advanced unnaturally quickly), William is pride, the twins are worshipping a false idol in Black Phillip, and Katherine is wrath (blaming William and Thomasin for their predicaments).
ROBERT EGGERS is just about to release a remake of NOSFERATU featuring BILL SKARSGARD as the vampire
I can't wait. I loved The Witch and The Lighthouse.
Did some genealogy recently and found out that I have a super distant ancestor who was a ‘town hog slayer’ in Salem Massachusetts during that time
That's so metal... 😆
"Why would she want to join them?!"
Her character arc is about being set free from religious tyranny and patriarchy. She was ousted by her own family. The last shot of the film is her ascension, both literally and figuratively.
The Witch is my favourite horror movie of the 2010s. Also the director, Robert Eggers, is the same director as The Lighthouse and The Northman. I cannot wait to see his upcoming version of Nosferatu!
The way Black Philip took care of her more than her own family 🤷♀️ Happy for Thomasin
This movie is set in New England, USA in the 1600s
Sorry but there was no USA in the 1600's
@@jhschmidMD4 Don't be pedantic.
@@jhschmidMD4 okay American colonies lol
This movie is set in early 1600s New England. The family are English colonists (likely Puritans), at a time when the colonies were pretty much brand new, and barely established.
That's why being banished from the support of the colony was pretty much a death sentence, even if there wasn't a coven of woods-witches cursing the family.
they are Puritans and practice extreme modesty, that's why Caleb is curious of Thomasin who is becoming a woman. Thats how the witch lures him in the woods.
31:30 - Why would she join the coven? Because Puritan life was awful. You saw it.
I love this movie so much. The authentic old english dialect is so immersive. Everything just feels so real. I’d sign that book for sure.
The witch was making “flying ointment” with the baby. Something that witches really made back in the day, though without babies. I think historians believe that the witches who made flying ointment were using hallucinogens in their concoctions without knowing it, and thus tripping balls and actually thinking they are flying.
As a practicing witch, the belief was that the ointment separated the mind from the body, so your spirit would fly about the countryside, while your body stayed in place. But yeah, they were totally tripping balls. 😅
@@robertgronewold3326 yeah I think it was akin to astral projection, and historically I believe there is records of witches administering the ointment with the handle of a broomstick, using it in a sexual manner, which is where the witch flying on a broom imagery comes from. Witchcraft and general magic vary wildly from culture to culture though, and I am specifically speaking of the historical examples around New England during the Salem Witch Trials era.
The concoction was administered vaginally, and to do so with the stiff hoop dresses at the time required an implement, hence, 'flying on broomsticks.' Also, this is early modern English; if they were speaking old or middle English, you wouldn't be able to understand them at all.
The wife, Kate Dickie, was indeed in GoT, but she was not Stanni's wife! She was Lady Lysa Arryn, the sister of Caitlyn Stark, the crazy mum that breastfed her 12 y/o or something son up the Eyrie, untill she was yeeted by little finger
She plays an extremely crazy person VERY WELL
She was also "Ford" in PROMETHEUS.
And Ralph Ineson plays Dagmer Cleftjaw.
Both the wife and husband are in GoT.
When I was a kid back in the 60's I remember hearing my grandmother gossiping with the other relatives about some woman still breastfeeding her kids after they were no longer babies...
As someone who grew up on a farm, and has made homemade ice cream and butter. That "fapping sound" was the witch churning the remains of the baby into a bucket of blood that she rubbed over herself to be able to fly
No wonder why I keep coming back to Marys videos! She's a witch!
Hehehehe
Ambiguity. Was a witch in the woods responsible for these things or was that merely the perception of the family, given their beliefs at the time, and in fact it was the family doing these things to each other? My take: everyone that had something horrible happen to them was alone with Thomasin when it happened. Samuel disappeared when in Thomasin's care. Caleb was alone in the woods with Thomasin (I think some kind of incestuous sexual encounter happened between them). Mercy and Jonas were alone with Thomasin in the barn (I think she killed them). Her father was alone with Thomasin (and Black Philip) when he died (I think she killed him and Black Philip's role in the affair was invented in her mind). And of course she killed her mother. She went insane from the separation from the community, the starvation, the onset of teenage hormones (and a belief system which repressed such things through strong fears), and possibly from the blight on the crops (look it up, a certain fungal blight at that time caused people to go crazy and hallucinate; it is believed to be responsible for the Salem witch trials). All the stuff about witchcraft was merely her, and her family's, filtering what they couldn't understand through the lens of their belief system.
Ralph Ineson has such a cool voice. I'd listen to him read the instructions on a shampoo bottle.
The mother is played by Kate Dickie. She plays Lysa Tully in Game of Thrones. The father is played by Ralph Ineson who plays Dagmer Cleftjaw in Game of Thrones.
Lysa Arryn, nee Tully in GoT.
The dad was the captain from the Iron Isle that betrayed Theon at Winterfell (and he was a Russian officer in Chernobyl)....good actor.
Was also in “Ready Player One”.
This movie is so well made.
Has she seen "Split" with Anya and McCavoy?? 😮..
Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?
All it takes is butter and a pretty dress 😅
Thomasin is the illigitimate child of her father. Katherine isnt her biological mother.
Caleb and Thomasin share the same father, but their mothers are different. Still awkward, but that might better explain the dynamic.
Ohhh that makes sense !!!
Witch is truly a fantastic film. It's extremely historically accurate in terms of clothing, items and the like, and the plot brilliantly explores themes of isolation, religious fanaticism, coming of age, and patriarchy (Thomasin gets accused by her family simply because she's a girl, after all). As someone interested in both history, religion and horror, I absolutely love it.
Black Phillip has his own fan base, lol.
Lmfaooo
The dialog and acting from the parents and the son is amazing. Absolutely favorite movie. - new subscriber! ♡
This movie was so well done. It was so unsettling to watch without having to directly see a whole lot of things happen.
This is a masterful movie and it made me a fan of Robert Eggers! I wouldn’t change the final minutes one bit. Even though many circumstances guided Thomasin to this fate seeing her embrace it with such rapture is the cherry on top
The terrifying thing about this is the liberation aspect at the end. The idea of the coven and the feeling of unison with the power that is supposedly evil is the usual concept the better films play with, this one shows the way the belief spreads. The only thing it avoided was the 'power of belief' which makes it ultimately terrifying.
“…that’s a crow literally eating her titties. How’s your nipples sis? Ohh, bad… very bad” 27:10 Lol despite how horrible that had me cracking up.
Nice choice and great reaction! Can’t wait for Eggers next movie Nosferstu coming out on Xmas 2024.
Should check out some Aussie movies. Would love some insight from the southern hemisphere. How about Rabbit-Proof Fence, Wolf Creek or The Nightingale?
Happy VVitching!!
It's already considered one of the greatest 'horror' films ever.
I love this movie. One of my favourite horror movies of recent years. Weirdly it’s become a comfort movie for me. I love the historical accuracy. I love the overall eerie vibe.
I'm so glad you're reacting to this it is one of my favorite horror movies & it had a very interesting story about the old days 😄
IMO This is by far the best presentation of the devil, it's not scary or huge or meant to be threathening, it's meant to seduce you, to creep on to you, your wishes, your desires and make you fall. Just the sound of the voice is so engulfing and overwhelming, gets you trapped. Somerhing like Robert California.
Hi Mary, hey if you want to watch a horror movie with a lot of blood but at the same time funny and cartoonish, I recommend Braindead by Peter Jackson (yes, the same director of Lord of the Rings and King Kong). It's a very crazy and funny zombie horror comedy, and it was one of the director's first films before he left for Hollywood. Excellent for this month 👍👍👍
PD: Good reaction 🖤
In the days of 'witchcraft' portrayed here, it was believed the blood and 'fluids' of the young and virginal would gift youth to the witch, and also was the preferred sacrifice to the devil. i think the twins that start acting funny as caleb dies have hysteria, like what happened at Salem and the witch trials. Another accurate portrayal of witches in folklore is the classic Susperia...though i prefer the remake to the original.
I completely agree with you about the music. It got to me too lol. Everything about this film is so well done. I hope Robert Eggers continues to make films for a long time. He's great.
OMG I hope Mary reacts to Nosferatu! --the 1922 silent film, AND the remake that is being made by the Director of The Witch!
Eggers said this was New England 1630. It almost has to begin in Plymouth Massachusetts because most other New England colonies had failed and Boston was just under construction that year. The beginning was filmed at the Plymouth recreation site.
Lesson of the movie… don’t sleep on Black Phillip lol
🤣🤣
I love this movie. It just sucks you in without you even being aware of it, and it's so beautifully shot. So many frames would make good wall art for an apartment or something. Thanks for reacting to it.
Mary is the real GOAT 👑
😂😂
loved your reaction to finding out she was in fact in GOT but not the character you originally thought
And i have to say, the scene of the Dad begging and pleading for God to save his family messed me up. To be in that situation and literally grovel in the dirt and beg while the Devil tears your family apart. Horrifying This movie got overlooked at the Oscar's. It really did. Brilliantly made and acted.
if you can vvithstand Anya's gaze and not be immediately vvitched, you might be cursed.
Down, down, down, down, down the witches road.....
One of the best horror movies to come out in the past decade
You are indeed right, Anya was in the Northman, that movie was such a trip and she was as always giving an oscar-worthy performance.
Everyone I know slept on this movie...glad you didnt
Easy mistake but it's Bill's oldest brother that is in The Northman, Alexander.
Insidious would be a good horror for the month of October
They're basically speaking in a Yorkshire accent from just a couple of generations ago. My grandad talked pretty much exactly like Ralph Ineson (the main guy) in this movie, although Ineson is enunciating more. Lots of thee, thy and thou. I just checked and Ineson was born in York so it makes sense that his accent was the most authentic. Funny, he's about 3 weeks older than me and was born no more than 15 miles away!
You have to remember that at the end of the movie Thomesin had nothing to live for when Satan offered her everything. It was at her weakest and most desperate moment that the devil offered her comfort and power.
Nah......that was Lysa Aryn, Catlyns crazy sis in GOT. And the dad with the fantastic voice played Dagmer. Theon's first mate that speared Maester Luwin before the Ironborn rolled out of Winterfell.
Bleeding was a common practice back in the day to get rid of any illnesses plaguing an individual.
I was like okay that goat went to nice to a killer
The creepy musical instrument used that sounds like a Violin is called a Tagelharpa
Awesome reaction, Mary. I love this movie for it's originality, it's distance from cliché and from horror movie tropes.
Creepy, but a good movie. Keep in mind, modern medicine did not exist until about the mid 19th century. Up until that point, most medicine followed the ancient Greek beliefs in what was called the "Four Humours". Witchcraft was often blamed for medical ailments that could not be explained or cured via the Four Humours ideology. It wasn't until medical science and knowledge advanced and things like germs and bacteria were discovered that the Four Humours ideology was finally abandoned. It isn't much of a stretch for the movie to use witchcraft to spice up the drama since witchcraft was the default "we don't know what's wrong but if Christ can't fix it, it must be the devil" rationale. It's weird to think that a couple hundred years ago, medicine was a whole lot of voodoo per se.
Should've stayed with your first instinct - JUST SAY "NO".
Witches aren't exclusively born. It's a spiritual path. In simple terms. A witch is on the right-hand path or the left-hand path.
This movie is awesome and it ends on a down note. Everyone in the family is dead, thomasin seeked answers and instead got tempted by the devil. She basically gave in. And the music is perfect!! Awesome reaction.
a. "Wouldst thou like to live deliciously? " --Black Phillip
b. Anya Taylor Joy's amazing in this.
c. The scenes were lit/filmed by natural light as well as candles.
When i went to go see it i thought it would be more psychological than supernatural......im like Oh witch riding a broom
cursed, you're good for halloween now
Another fantastic reaction Mary ❤❤😁😁.
You’re not born a witch in all lore. In some things like this you have to make a pact with the devil and sign your name in a book.
I mean you take the deal or be a young girl alone in those times? Ill sign twice.
14:20 I've seen this movie 5 times, and I'd still go in...
“Wouldst thou like to live, deliciously?”
Loved your sincere reaction!
There are some movies out there that can give me a good scare but this movie for some reason really escalated what a movie can do to create a horror environment.
Just take in consideration the time in which this takes place 1600s. We are talking puritans coming from england escaping in some cases religion persecution by their own goverment and at the same time we are talking of cristians fanatics willing in some cases to apply death penalties for religion transgresions.
Then you have this family which is basically remove from their own community and have to face the wilderness of the new world.
Superb film. Exactly what a good horror story should do - have you on edge throughout.
While the dialogue is certainly old by our standards, it's not "Old English". It's early Modern English. Middle English would be difficult for modern speakers to interpret and Old English would be completely unintelligible. It would look and sound like a strange foreign language.
Cult? You mean coven? And yeah, I’d become a witch too after all that. Her family was horrible.
I haven't even watched the video yet but this my favorite Horror film EVER! Some scenes use biblical references (that you can actually find on the Bible) to make the whole experience legitimately disturbing. 10/10 for me!
nope! not in England. These are Puritan settlers in America. That is why they were banished from the plantation. My guess would be the Massachusetts colony
This movie made me an Anya Taylor Joy fan. This is just a great horror movie. It leaves in just enough ambiguity to be unsettling as hell.
The mom was acting suspicious because she was under a spell technically. Her Silver Cup was on the shelf. She looked at it then looked at “Caleb and the baby”
Deep Cut for SpookySeason, Mary ; nice
SHE A WITCH EVERYONE RUN 😂😂😂😂
I went to see this in theatres. So good.
I thought this movie was really interesting, though i wasn't a huge fan of the very last minute of the end. I wish it had stopped just before that witches dance in the forest scene. I felt it detracted from the more philosophical and intruiging moments in the film and the big question of if she/isn't she. Great movie though, and great reaction!
You know "Cruel Intentions"? Might be something you like!
Fav halloween movie right here
The goat looks like the Iowa slipknot album cover
If you want to hunt the Black Phillip goat, feel free to play Witch Hunt. It's exciting!😸👍
Mary The Witch
14:52 Surely a witch wouldn't...
man i was expecting blaid witch
This is the first time I’ve ever heard the phrase, “fapping noise.” 😅 Now I’m curious what noises Mary’s heard. 🤣
Such a funny reaction! 😁
This movie reminds of those ugly witches in the woods in the witcher 3 game.
I seen this when it came out, super freaky movie that doesn't get enough attention.
Hey Mary! I really liked THE VVITCH & watched it a 2nd time the day after my 1st viewing of it. The 1st time I watched it, it was around 10pm & I had all the lights off which helped me really get into the vibe of the movie. I didn't think it scary. I thought it more creepy & tragic.
When I was younger I was really into reading about the Salem Witch Trails. I also read the Crucible amongst other tales about witches. Anything to do w/what I consider the horror trilogy: vampires, werewolves & witches, I'm pretty much into.
A couple of years ago I watched THE VVITCH for a 3rd time all the way thru w/a friend of mine. She mentioned something I hadn't thought about. I mean, maybe it was because of her Catholic school upbringing, but she asked me if "the witch of the wood" was able to take family members because they were committing 1 of the 7 Deadly Sins, & that besides the baby, Thomasin was the only innocent one. Caleb was Lust because he kept checking out his sister & he was easily seduced by a random woman in the woods. The twins were Sloth because they played around all day not doing their chores which Thomasin had to do to pick up the slack. They get the added bonus of talking to Black Philip. The father was Pride which he even admits to. The mother is mostly Wrath & maybe some Envy most of it directed at Thomasin. Black Philip/the "Devil" did what he enjoys doing corrupting the innocent. When Thomasin had nothing & no one, that's exactly what he did.
Ok, time period of the movie is probably a bit after 1630. The reason I say this is because the Puritans following John Winthrop didn't leave England for America until then.
The acting in this movie was phenomenal. Twice so far the actress Kate Dickie has had someone/something suckling at her breast. SHEESH! Mary, everytime u said "Stannis' wife", I would call out to my TV screen "Wrong person! She's Lysa Arryn, Caitlyn's sister." It drove me nuts.😄 The actor that played the father was also from GoT. He was 1 of the Iron Islanders & a part of Theon's crew when they took over Winterfell. He's the guy that knocked Theon out after his speech. I saw that people gave u his name & even his character name, but not who/where he was in GoT.
Alright, I need to bring things to an end. Great reaction, I really enjoyed it.😊👍
Caleb been tempted by lust the whole movie that the witch put that thang on Caleb, and he lost his mind 😂😂
That is messed up tho
Caleb was raised in extreme puritanism and told his natural urges were sinful. So he loses his mind when introduced to the pleasure of the flesh because he can't reconcile that something that feels that good is sinful and warps it into religious rapture. Also he may have caught syphilis 😅
