The electrical current from the collector rings interferes with the drivers. That's why a lot of the EOWS sirens have problems, but the hard-wired Whelens are still going strong.

There’s actually a Whelen model that has collector rings: the 2000r/400r. It’s an old model and is VERY hard to find

Come on down and camp over the weekend" T-128: I have an idea. *few hours later* T-128: okay let's get packing! :T-128 packs a tent and some logs in his bag: T-128: Oh, and don't forget this tempest cola, just in case. *at this camp site*Scene: The woods with a running river. T-128: wow, this place is cool. T-128: oh, it looks like there were already spots taken, I guess I have to find a new spot. *15 minutes later*Scene: somewhere in the woods with a big bush. T-128: anything here. Oh, I think there's a spot in that bush. *goes into the bus* *finds Whelen doing his business in Allertor. T-128: Oh my god! Whelen: HEY! IM IN HERE! Allertor: f*** you again Whelen! *T-128 runs out of the bush* T-128: that was so nasty. *later in the day* T-128: man in thirsty. T-128: Good thing I packed this tempest cola. *T-128 drinks the tempest cola* *burps really loud* *five seconds later* *2810 appears with leaves sticking out of him and a broken antenna* 2810: HEY! WHAT DO YOU SAY?!T-128: nothing but 2810, what happened to you? 2810: thunderbolt was running me way while 1003 was chasing him so I ran away and fell down here. T-128: oh. *later that evening* *T-128 looks tired* Hey, what's that over there? a tent? *goes into tent* *2001-srn, 2001-130, & 2001-DC are in there by a table.* T-128: oh hey guys. 2001-130: oh, it's just T-128. 200--srn: hey dude. T-128: sup? 2001-Dc: T-128 you should be very careful out there! T-128: what, why? 2001-DC: because the penatrator bear is out there. T-128: what's the penatrator bear? 2001-Dc: the penatrator bear, is a bear siren, that lives deep in this woods, it looks a lot like a p-10. One night, it lures a siren into the deep woods and strangles is to death. 2001-130: dude! 2001-dc: what? 2001-130: you know that stuff is fake, the penatrator bear isn't real! 2001-dc: yes it is, it happened last season. T-128: wait what? So I gonna watch out or something? 2001-srn: just hide in a bin or something. 2001s: HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA. *T-128 gets irritated and leaves* Scene: T-128's camping spot. T-128, ugh, I'm tired, it's time to go to sleep. *in the middle of the night* *a p-10 in the distance is sounding off while T-128 sleeps* T-128 wakes up all tired T-128: Ugh, who the heck at 12 am is sounding off. *p-10 shuts down* T-128: ugh, whatever, I'll just go to sleep again. *later* Penatrator bear shows up right next to T-128. P-bear: *sniff* *sniff* *grrrrrrrrr* *P-bear slaps T-128 and disappears* T-128: wakes up T-128: AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. T-128: oh, I thought I heard something. *in the morning* Scene: T-128's place T-128: its good to be home *2t22 shows up* 2t22: dude, have you heard what happened last night. T-128: what? 2t22: someone was kidnapped in a camping site T-128: oh my god! T-128: well, at least I'm safe.

In all truthfullness, the lack of collector rings is a good thing. Collector rings on electronic sirens is actually very bad on the drivers. Aside from that, I've never heard of the wires breaking because of a lack of collector rings.
what if the oscillation switch fails and it keeps rotating the same direction. then you got problems. and my megablaster junior has always had collector rings and never had any problems with the speakers other than the amp chip overheating sometimes (probably due to the lack of a heat sink.). which is on the control board. here is a video i found on youtube that promotes the reason why rotational sirens need collector rings. also read its description. ua-cam.com/video/Bsn3k4Ek3RM/v-deo.html

i'm not saying the oscillator switch did or didn't break. just that it's possible. anything can break.

Well, whelen was really a jerk in a few instances so a broken wire was pretty much proper karma.
