I can only describe my experience but eating more protein does not equal losing weight and it affected my biking performance doing hills and centuries when I reduced carbs.
I found cutting fat and increasing my carb intake with continuing some protein AND watching caloric intake over several weeks led to a 10% reduction in weight without sacrificing power on the bike.
This is just my own personal experience.

You are confusing fat with protein. Just eat organic chicken and turkey breast, and the leanest parts of beef and lamb. Cook them on steam or grill, add olive oil salt and pepper and that’s it.

@@kpsig I am not confusing fat and protein. I know the difference. Losing weight for me without sacrificing power was reducing my intake of fat, increasing carbs and keeping protein levels the same.

I'm over 50. Read Friel's book. Yeah definitely you can lose weight on a low carb diet... Can it fuel your aerobic and anaerobic efforts more efficiently? Methinks not. I run across so much evidence to the contrary. Layne Norton's a good one to run afoul of these ideas.

What you say is true. If your keeping carbs low to lose weight, you can forget doing big smash fests on group rides you’ll get dropped. While dieting ride by yourself like a hermit in zone 2 - long and easy I’ve done it. Carbs are needed when you want to ride hard - race etc….

Joe Friel is INCORRECT that “exercise like riding your bike” will prevent bone loss and therefore protect one from the consequences of breaking their hip. WEIGHT LIFTING, RESISTANCE TRAINING IOW is the type of exercise that preserves bone integrity and wards off the consequences of falling and breaking bones.

As far as im conserned 100 grams of protein is 400 kcal and it leaves quite a lot of space for other macronutrients during the day for you 😅

Calories in v calories out. If you are in an overall calorie deficit you will lose weight. The only other thing is to make sure that the calories you do consume hit your daily macros for protein etc. That’s it.
Also re the more injuries as you get older - no mention by JF of hormones. For males both HGH and testosterone decrease steadily and significantly once you hit 40. Both these hormones have a huge effect on recovery & repair and maintaining muscle mass etc.

Why not just reduce fat… cutting carbs as a cyclist isn’t a good idea unless maybe it’s your off season why doesn’t he even talk about the option of cutting down on the fats or at least doing a little less carbs and fat and increase protein so that you still have sufficient carb stores

If you eat 3000cals a day from KFC, meat, etc VS fruit, sugar and white rice you will FEEL, LOOK, PERFORM, SMELL etc VASTLY different despite 'same calorie balance' lol.
JF forgets 4 BILLION slim people eat high gi carbs 4x a day and are crushing life.
JF caught up in dietary dogman lol. Imagine trying to push more watts and get life done by cutting down on dates and watermelon lol.
The last 30 years my diet has been highly processed carbs. Im 46 and RIPPED year round.

He talks about losing weight, not maintaining it. Of course if you've never got fat, I mean real fat, over 30 or 35 BMI index then it's easy to say eat what you want and exercise a lot, while they're unable to do HIIT trainings. So it's really important for who does he advice this. For sure those athletes who do high intensity need a lots of carbs not just for fueling themselves but for even stay healthy not overtrained. But for a short period of the year after off season if an athlete put on some weight and starts again training at low intensity then it's a good time to eat less and low GI carbs but not too strict, just providing about 35-40kCal/fat free mass energy availability. Otherwise if they try to do this in the racing season they just get overtrained and performance will get worse.
Unfortunately a lot of people lost in this losing weight question. There is not only one way to lose weight it's highly individual and advising should depend on blood profiling for first. Sometimes really specific for thyroid, red blood cell fat profile, glucose tolerance, sex hormones etc.

@@cracked229 not at all. If you do stage races, training camp or just very hard trainings of course you don't restrict carbs. Then the riders consume about 2g/bwkg of proteins and 10-12g of carbs/bwkg.
However if you try to lose weight and you're healthy then you have to restrict simple carbs in most cases as I said, 4-6g/bwkg is fair enough in the normal diet for an athlete who does only base trainings, low intensity. Btw if someone has thyroid dysfunction then carb restriction will not help in all cases. As I said it's individual.

Joel needs to tell the 4 billion people who are SLIM on carbs they are doing it wrong lol.
He needs to tell the kenyan elite runners they will be lighter if they eat more chicken and less corn, sugar, bananas, rice etc.
Joel needs to stay in his lane lol. He caught up in dietary dogma using studies done by the egg industry etc.

@@ericlambi different macronutrients are processed differently, sure, and may slightly impact the calories out (expended), but not to the degree Friel is talking about. 800 excess calories in protein (or any macro) will result in weight gain, undoubtedly.

    • @dylanmorin6468
      @dylanmorin6468 7 місяців тому +8

@@cyclingiscool3798 nope he did not say that. He reference a study that demonstrated no weight gain with 800 cals of additional protein. We are not bombcalorimeters, we have hormones that are released as we eat that affect how energy is stored (ie fat, glycogen, or muscle). 800 cals of proteins will not be metabolized the same as 800 cals of carbs.

True, but what he didn't clearly say is that high glycemic foods make you crave more of them vs. satiatiating your appetite.
