the Orthodox world, particularly Haredi-ism, has taken a lot culturally from being in the exile in Europe...in particular the puritanism of Catholics...to the point where frum guys who aren't married go berzerk trying to keep shomer negiah, for example.
they have Catholicized how the Torah views sex.

as for the Holocaust, it and all of our tsuris over the years, were cause by the "sin" of the spies.
hence Tisha B'Av. we cried for nothing...so HaShem gave us a reason to cry for something, for thousands of years.

Thou shall not covet - which is a thought based sin

I was also thinking about that.
It should be clarified - the difference between a thought, and intentionally delving on that thought.
We cannot control the thoughts that come to us - those are challenges. What we do with those thoughts, however, can be good or bad. And acting on that thought can also be within our thoughts, such as actively continuing that thought process in a negative direction, rather than working through it in a positive manner.

the mistake R" Golub is making is assuming that Judaism is a "practice" ie a religion.
The Jewish people are eternally bound to the Creator (our history is a prime proof of this). some of us are just not conscious to it and/or are not plugged-in. it's not a matter of "personal belief".
We are Knesset Israel (not the Israeli parliament lol)...but a "body". Read Rav Kook and many other mekubalim throughout the centuries.

you keep saying "the Jewish G-d". stop.
    it's ONE G-d.

R" Golub...again a mistake. We were told that prophecy would return.
Every Jews has the potential to attain prophecy, even in this low generation.
once again, Rav Kook wrote about it.
