    Thanks for the overview.
    Why are you using a kite and not a drone? I’ve done some KAP over the years. I still see kites in my future, but I’ll be moving towards a fixed wing drone in the coming years.

      Keith McKeown You’re welcome, thanks for watching! I get this question a lot lately, and it makes sense...why on earth would anyone choose a kite over a drone these days?! Well, I started doing my aerial work using a kite over 15 years ago, long before drones were readily available. I continue to choose a kite over a drone for a few reasons...one being that I am not restricted by the same flight regulations that drones are, so I can fly in areas where drones are not allowed. The other major reason is that I can lift a much heavier, much higher quality camera into the air using a kite than most drones can lift; I’d need a pretty serious drone to life the cameras that I use. While using a kite probably does take much longer than using a drone, I enjoy the process and think of it as part of the art. It’s not just about getting the shot for me, it’s the entire process.

      Why do you use a kite and not a drone? In France the rules and laws are very strict, while at home you may still enjoy some freedom or naiveté powers in place.
      So in France the kite to make the photo is an advantage, it is limited to 150 m of altitude with some forbidden places which comes under the good sense whereas drones are subjected to rules so strict that the manufacturers do everything to have drones of less than 800 grams to pass under certain rules in particular the registration of the pilot and the machine which must carry his registration.
      For the video the drone offers opportunities more and more reserved for licensees and professionals not for everyone, pls on a drone we have the sound of screaming engines, kite if you have hardware Hight Tech No noise in the videos, the sound of the waves, the wind and the children playing below, the cries of the birds, in short the dream.

    Nice explanation Evan. I was wondering, where is that wireless video transmitting and receiving device coming from?

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer  5 років тому +1

      Rienk Huizenga thanks for watching. I suppose I should have covered that better in the video. Maybe I’ll make another one that goes over the video downlink. It’s actually a separate tiny old security camera that I attach to the rig which sends a live video down the the receiver on the ground. Let me know if you’re interested in the brand/model and I’ll let you know. I’m out of town right now and don’t have it with me and can’t remember what the brand is. I know I had to special order it from Europe though.

      @@EvanReinheimer I was looking for something like that. Most newer camera's can be remote controlled and monitored by either bluetooth or WIFI, but the range is mostly not sufficient :-( So I was looking for something else that could do the job. No hurry though. Have a nice time.

    @Evan Reinheimer >>> Regarding those two brackets that allow you to shoot horizontal or vertical photos: Have you ever tried to build a rig that allows you to switch from horizontal to vertical remotely?
    I have never tried it, but I know at least a couple people have. I think it is referred to as a _"HoVer"_ rig?

      I personally would prefer the simplest rig because of weight considerations. For a professional like Evan, a carbon fiber rig, if it is available, would be my top choice

    Evan, I love your work and I'm going to start KAPing. I bought my kite the other day. Now I'm looking for a rig. I'm shooting with my Sony A7iii and will practice on a even smaller old Cannon Rebel. Can you let me know which specific Brooxes Rig you are using, the Brooxes Deluxe KAP Kit or the Brooxes Maxi KAP rig? I want to add the tilt servo unit too. Any suggestions on the modifications you made? Do you trigger the camera with one of the IR triggers? Finnally, how do you know what the view finder is seeing? I saw one of your earlier videos and you had a separtate wireless camera that was aligned in paralell to your camera but that solution did not seem be wifi. Most wifi enabled remotes like CamRanger don't seem to have sufficent range. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Dave

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer  Рік тому

      Hey Dave! The rigs I’m using all started out as BEAK rigs many years ago when I was using small point and shoot cameras. I’ve modified them over the years as I moved from point and shoot to APS-C to full frame Mirrorless Sony cameras now. I’m using the IR trigger on the camera with an IR LED attached to the rig and positioned right in front of the IR receiver on the camera. For video feed, I’m transmitting via a radio signal, because as you said, wifi and Bluetooth don’t have the range needed. I would love for CamRanger to make a unit that would transmit that far, and there’s probably some kind of way to hack that into a radio signal that would transmit farther. But that’s way beyond my knowledge. I’ve often thought about getting in touch with people who made custom drones about building a custom KAP rig that could do all these things in a simpler way.

      @@EvanReinheimer Thanks! I learned about FPV being used in drones and model vehicles. I'm about ready to select and buy the components for a KAP rig. I love my Sony and can't wait to get it up. Going to probably just buy a rig kit from Brooxes.

      @@dkiel5771 you can’t go wrong with a Brooxes rig. I would recommend starting with an inexpensive camera (as you said w the Cannon) and really perfecting your kiting skills first. The concept is simple but it can be a bit trickier than it looks. Good luck and happy flying!

    Please could you upload specific instructions of how you made the rotating rig? It would also be very helpful if you could include a parts list with links. I am really interested in making something like this for use with a Gopro on a kite. A user on another KAP video uses a PULUZ 360 Degree Rotation Panoramic Head with a gopro, however when it is on the kite, the remote control does not work due to range. I guess it may be possible to modify something like the PULUZ 360 with some sort of remote relay, but again it would have to work over a long range. Any ideas?

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer  5 років тому

      The servo I use to rotate the rig can be found here: www.amazon.com/Parallax-Continuous-Rotation-Servo-PARALLAX/dp/B01M6D0KTM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&tag=evan0dd-20&linkId=58241609c7ee21ac908d0e9fc133b7d9&language=en_US. It connects to a radio receiver that is linked to the remote control.
      This is the receiver: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V9WIU2S/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=sl1&tag=evan0dd-20&linkId=1cadba90ab1fca45d94cbd6c62fa0500&language=en_US
      This is the remote control: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VE3PZ3Y/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=sl1&tag=evan0dd-20&linkId=d37d2c9f6a314d0032f05a7d121914b7&language=en_US
      This rig actually started out as a BEAK rig from Brooxes.com and I have modified it several times now to suit newer and heavier cameras. A rig like this is now would be major overkill for a GoPro, I'd recommend looking at the BEAK rig on Brooxes.com for use with a GoPro maybe.
      Hope this helps.

    So just to confirm, only the pan is automated and not tilt? I guess you manually adjust the tilt / camera angle before sending the rig into the air?

    • @EvanReinheimer
      @EvanReinheimer  3 роки тому +1

      On this rig, that is correct. Most of the time I don't find a need for the added weight of tilt servos. I generally have a good idea of the downward angle I will need and can bring the camera down to adjust if needed.

      In another thread I replied to a comment that a carbon fiber rig, if available, would be a very strong and light weight option for a professional like yourself.

    Dans toutes les vidéos avec ce vieux système Picavet, on explique toujours un tas de trucs pour faire fonctionner, OK c'est bien pour faire des photos en mitrallant on obtient toujours une photo pas trop de travers.
    Pour faire une petite vidéo c'est fichu avec le bruit énorme généré par les servomoteurs, et que dire du poids total de l'ensemble lorsque 115 gr et un tube de fibre de verre suffiront à faire des vidéos en 5.7K de vrais panoramiques sphériques en 360°x360° pour bien moins que 200 grammes sans besoin de radio commande et de retour vidéo le tout alourdissant la nacelle KAP KAM.
    Moins de 200 gr pour filmer en tous sens, donc plus de bruit de servomoteurs, plus d'accus à gérer en plus on range le tube du système pendulaire dans le sac du cerf-volant, et la caméra dans son petit étuit et hop dans la poche !
    In all the videos with this old Picavet system, we always explain a lot of stuff to make it work, OK it's good to make photos by mixing it always gets a photo not too bad.
    To make a small video it's done with the huge noise generated by the servomotors, and what about the total weight of the set when 115 gr and a tube of fiberglass will be enough to make videos in 5.7K true spherical panoramas in 360 ° x360 ° for well less than 200 grams without the need for radio control and video feedback all weighing down the KAP KAM nacelle.
    Less than 200 gr to film in all directions, so more noise from servomotors, more batteries to manage in addition we tidy the tube of the pendular system in the bag of the kite, and the camera in his little étuit and hop in the pocket !

    My first reaction is: how would you explain all of this gear to airport security ;)

    • @EvanReinheimer

      Airport security is pretty used to seeing camera gear that they may not understand. Think about how many film crews travel with cameras and steady cam equipment. On occasion when additional screening was necessary, security has googled me, looked at my website, watched my UA-cam and found news articles about me.
