    The fun in DJing is the spontaneity. Doing this take that all out! But to each his own....

      Ableton is a daw for production or creating a premix Its terrible for live mixing with a controller or a vinyl set, thats what serato or virtual dj is for

    • @wowkaz

      Alice Huang its better to just produce in ableton then go mix in serato and then remaster ur track once more in albleeleleton

      Why would it take spontenaity out of it? Even if you DJ with vinyl, you make some preparation as to which records you bring. With Live you can bring as many tracks as you want. Yes you need to warp the tracks beforehand, but for 99% of (EDM) tracks you will just have to set one marker at the start, takes 15 seconds at most to warp a track.

    I used to dj using vinyl only. Now I dj using Ableton only. Yes, it is a little time consuming for me to record each track I find on UA-cam into each audio clip and then warp it. But when it is finally done, I can just choose what tracks I want to mix together in Session view (which is way better and easier to use for DJing than the Arrangement view). I also like the fact that I can add my own beats/loops or part of my own tracks that I have produced with the selected artists tracks. However and unfortunately, there are times when parts of the warped tracks do get off a little or even mildly trainwreck.

    "respectul" DJs tend to diss artists who use Ableton Live. I don't know how to mix using vinyl or CDs but I know how to produce tracks and use Ableton Live to DJ with excellent results and tastefully.

      No there isn't. Live doesn't manipulate audio like that. If that's what you want, like the ability to scratch and manipulate the audio with a turntable style job wheel then I'd suggest you use another platform.

    Hey Vespers, something that's been making me want to switch to other DJ softwares is the frequency with which I'm on my lap top while freestyle DJing (i.e. constantly using my mouse to drag in clips / songs, make adjustments to endless things etc ...) even though I have a controller. Is there a way to DJ with live without using the laptop? Thanks!

    great video, but i do not agree Traktor is simple, it has it great disadvantages: its not reliable: often happens: Tracks are not available, Tracks are missing, during Traktor updates traktor neglets your user file setting, in case you are using external drives. Then a mess with file handling using itunes. I feel traktor is complicated and very old fashioned. I seriously will get rid of traktor in favour to abletons session concept as today a modern proven sw. The only thing i will miss is the flexible looping, cue points, flux mode etc... or using the F1 controller for remix sets etc, but here i think one can realize this using the drumracks in ableton and push2, maybe a more flexible solution. I think, ableton, push2 and the apc40 is the ideal dj set as alternative to traktor.

    Maybe this video is quite outdated although it's not that old?
    1. I don't really see a point since all you can do with it is crossfade and EQ
    2. Focusrite Scarlett makes models such as 2i4 and 6i6 which have 2 pairs of audio outputs so you don't need 2 separate sound cards
    3. You might as well MIDI map your DDJ controller to control Ableton so your double sound card setup might be useless after all

    I'm not try'n to sound like jerk, I'm just say'n the entire point of DJing essentially is to beatmatch on the fly w/o preparation spontaneously.
    I'm looking into using Deckadance inside Ableton and using Ableton as a sequencer. I've done it before and it's pretty effective. Traktor software has messed up on me in the past couple of gigs so it's look'n like I'm about to make a switch.

    • @ulek_604
      @ulek_604 7 років тому +17

      Beatmatching is not a special skill. Anybody can count to 4, I dont understand people that actually pride themselves on that. Imo DJing is not about beat matching, but about creativiley mixing different songs into each other that create a entirely new experience. Ableton is the best route for maximum creative freedom as far as that goes. Moving fast and proper mashups will always be way better than one on one mixing, because it changes the dynamics so much and therefor it allows you to bring something to your audience that they wouldnt be able to get anywhere else. Of course everyone should know how to beat match, but once they know there's no point in sticking with it just to prove to themselves that they can do a incredibly simple task. Sticking with it at that point is doing nothing but holding you back on your "mixing" workflow.

    intresting. I have ableton but I have no idea how to setup my pioneer SB2 with it. I'm using serato atm but the trial is getting towards an end. If I knew how than I'd rather use it with ableton to dj. any chance you could make a tutorial on what to look out for when connecting dj mixer/vinyl how ever you call it :p I'm new to all this as you see ^^

      It's a *very* late reply, but if you read it now (or others).. You can easily hit the link button in both software. I don't use Ableton for DJ'ing, but I have checked out the link feature as I do perform in my studio from time to time if I'm not out there :) In my studio I also have an SB2. I am véry limited in space, hence the choice for the SB2 four+ years ago.

    How is warping different than tempo shift??

    • @richarquis
      @richarquis 8 років тому +2

      +Jon Alder Tempo shift is just a change in your bpm rate. Warping doesn't change the master tempo rate, it just changes how the track aligns with Ableton's grid. If it's a simple 4/4 beat, then it's fast and easy. If it's a more complicated track with offbeat drums, then you need to manually place warp markers at the correct point on the grid, i.e., if the kick comes in on the first and third beat, then you don't want the warp markers being placed on the first and then again on the next first - You need to alter them manually. When the track is correctly warped, say a 125bpm track, with master tempo set at 125, then you will hear the metronome click in time with the beat. If that 125bpm track is incorrectly warped with a 125bpm master tempo, the metronome will click out of time with the beat, and proper beat matching will be impossible. It sucks to have to sit and do it all beforehand, but when it's done, it makes actual performance a breeze, letting you concentrate on other aspects of the mix besides beat matching - You're free to mess with effects and more layered mixing using multiple clips.

      Paul C i agree Serato for djing live, ableton MAYBE to create an awesome premix but even then I like to do my mixes on the go and beat match myself its not about countin to 4 like was said here already that actually makes me so mad, because you can beat mix and create your own beats the issue is most pl cant dj. I only use serato atm but I plan to use ableton to start producing soon
