  • There is only one opening I consider annoying and boring to play against. And here is my advice on how to beat it!
Check out my new website hangingpawns.net/ It's still a work in progress and any feedback is appreciated!

The Exchange Slav is something I hate seeing. It's an equal position where white is simply a tempo up in complete symmetry. Unless Black creates an early imbalance! I played my main setup against it, my otb repertoire, and got a position I knew well and managed to play quickly and relatively well.
These are the stats after 43 games:
    Starting rating: 2251
    Current rating: 2279 (+28)
    Current score: W 20, L 13, D 8, C 2
    Games with Black pieces: 23
    Games with White pieces: 20
    Days left: 419
    Rating: 2279/2500
I'm on a quest to get to 2500 lichess rapid by the end of 2024! This playlist will show every game I play, regardless of how painful it was.

When you think you played like a grandmaster, but after the game, Stockfish says you were an idiot. 😂

lol, so true. So many times I’ve been so proud of a clever sac or tactic that turned out to be 100% losing on the analysis. There is also something about the conviction of those kind of moves that can frighten your opponent into accepting your blunder😂

Thanks for sharing this beautiful game. :) Though of course Stockfish was not all that impressed.
Going to save this video as a nice example for me to imitate in my work on my middlegame planning. 💜

I agree with you, as a semi-slav player, the exchange variation is tough to see.

That was a very interesting game. You really missed an opportunity with 28... Ne7 with the idea of Ne7-g6 and if knight retreats to h3 you have Ng6-h5 followed by Nxg2 and Rg6 which really looked like the end to me. I also liked the f4 idea but with the rook on g8 it wasn't working. After 26... f4 27. exf4 I was looking into solutions with Nxd4 but Qc3 was always ruining my day. Just in general tho you handled the opening like a master. I sometimes play the exchange slav myself with White but I'll definitely have to look into this line 👏👏

Thanks! Now I just simplified my repertoire to play the Exchange Slav when I'm White, instead of allowing for too many Slav/Semi-Slav variations against me, now I just simplify.

I try to go for Nc6 > e5 when I can, or Qb6, just to avoid the sheer boredom of these positions.

35:58 Wasn't ...Nxe3+ winning on the spot? No I guess it gets complicated after Ke2, I guess. But it was worth a consideration. Stjepan played a bit fast despite the complicated nature of the position and his time situation.
Ok looking a bit deeper, I've come to the conclusion his move was better.

@@youricortat6176all those openings you mention have a bad reputation at the top level for a reason, and because of engines even lower rated but competent players can prep to the gills to smash you right in the opening
