@@deehinker1848 When dub Jiraiya is saying goofy things his voice fits his goofy dialogue. That's how it's supposed to be. Voice =/= personality does it? When a usually funny guy is at funeral saying a serious speech do you think his voice should still make you LOL? A personality has more than one emotion, and the voice SHOULD have more than one tone .... not goofy EVERY single time...
Jiraya during that scene is actually more serious than usual, so his voice is actually more goofy sounding normally. That was just a very one-off voice serious tone of his.

You also have Madara voice actor, Itachi voice actor, Kakashi voice actor, Gaara's etc. Troy Baker is great but there are LOTS of competition.
I mean you could argue the dude who voiced Madara and I mean obviously Yuri Lowenthal but yeah Troy Baker is one of the goats

There are many great VAs on Naruto, but Troy Baker (Pain) and Neil Kaplan (Madara) are the top 2 in this show. But those 2 characters also had the best VAs in japanese. Part of it is that they got the best lines.
Naruto is one of the very few shows I actually prefer in English dub, don't get me wrong the original japanese is great but some of the english voice acting is just iconic

You must listen to pain shouting “do you hate me now!!!?” In English when naruto loses control.
The roar afterwards is Naruto and Kurama screaming “yes!” in my head.
or when he shouts "my pain is still far greater than yours!!"

I'm always scared of how deep this dialogue is, and even more scared of how many people don't see, for example, philosophical connections in this dialogue, like with determinism, for example, which is one of Naruto's themes.
Jiraiya isn't just goofy. He's also has a serious side. He cares deeply about the ninja world and his destiny.
Edit: also, at this stage of his life, Jiraiya had lost hope for any peace in the ninja world. In this moment, Jiraiya was trying to explain to a kid both of his ideals and disappointment. David Lodge, his VA, did a great job portraying this nuance. Right after Naruto says he will take on Jiraiya's goal, he shifts his tone back to the goofy perry sage again. It's pretty good work.
Honestly, One Piece dubbed isn't that bad. I watched it dubbed my second time cause I just wanted something playing in the background and I was surprised how well it was done.

Instead of “datebayo” Naruto tends to say “y’know” in shippuden. But it was kinda retconned, as in the OG series he said “believe it” all the time.

"Believe it"was the Dub filling in with Some sort of phrase. they stopped after a while and when to the "Ya know" since thats more what hes actually saying.
Of course you don't like most of the dubbed voices, you've watched over 150 episodes in sub lol. It definitely will sound jarring on first listen because it's not what you're familiar with. But the dub voice actors are great too and deserve a lot of credit.

Dub is not bad but subbed still is better.
You should watch some clips of Jiraiya being goofy in dub. This was a serious scene so the VA played it that way. When he's being goofy pervy sage the dub matches the character really well.

That's one of The main reasons why Pain is my favorite character, Troy Baker did such an amazing job with This characters Voice, it's Very impressive How Great It is honestly.

Yes thank you guys I wanted to see you guys react to Pain's Speech in English Dub. In my opinion Pain is one of the best written characters in the show. love you guys and your content really makes my day, and you guys should do something like right after finishing the show in Sub you can rewatch it in Dub to see the difference of emotion in VA voice because some Sub and Dub hit hard depending on what situation the characters in. Also if you guys react to another Dub VA or speech I would like you guys to listen to the Dub version of tobi's VA because it's pretty funny.
I’m convinced that whichever version you hear first, the other will always be lesser. I love the dubbed anime that I watched first as dubbed and vice versa
Troy Baker kiiled it as Pain in the dub. His voice adds a different level of Gravitas & Darkness to the character. The other great example is Neil Kaplan's VA work for a certain Uchiha, which is quite haunting like the Ghost his character is.
Edit - Itachi's dub VA Crispin Freeman is another exapmle where his voice lends a certain calm, analytical & mysterious layer to Itachi. His work is amazing as well as quite underrated.
These 3 VA work especially, add another layer to the characters they play on top of what the characters were inteded to be by the Author Kishimoto.

As a villain his actions made 0 sense not sure how this is the best villain just because he is strong people like him. A good villain is someone who makes rational decisions his explanation is based on 12 year old morality. Just because his parents got killed now he has to erase an entire village. A teen has to explain low level morality to him and he changes his mind shortly after. That's easely of the best villains? Heck Zabuza even is by far better written and feels more like a real person than Pain.

Some scenes tbh sounds better in dub, but hell, sub sounds more natural, and realistic
It's okay to clearly show a bias towards something, especially if you understand that you are. But to say pervy sage didn't sound goofy enough during a serious heartfelt moment is wildy bias
Exactly, in the sub version Jiraiya's speech didnt sound goofy either. Their bias is 100% clouding their judgement.

Jiraiya's voice doesn't sound goofy cause of context of this scene...even in the subbed it's more serious cause it's not goofy scene.

The reason why Naruto sounds older and Pain a lot more deeper is the video they are watching it from. They deepened the audio to avoid copyright I guess.
I noticed that too, but they've also watched so many episodes in sub that it's not surprising to me that this is their opinion; their loss though lol🤷🏾♂️

English Dub for Pain is one of the rare good ones.

I remember seeing The Last of Us bts scenes where he voiced Joel doing some lines and his eyes are watered cause his character is talking about a traumatic past.
it's like he bonded and merge into the character, absolutely brilliant VA
Pervy sagas voice is like that in his serious moment, David lodge does a really fantastic job doing the more serious voice in serious moments.
Jiraiya’s voice is amazing in English. It’s really iconic, you watched one of the only scenes where he’s being serious. His voice is SUPER goofy, you should definitely watch another video and react to it, this clip didn’t do him justice. As far as Naruto’s “dattebayo” goes, he says “believe it” in part one, but then it changes to “Ya know” in Shippuden which is pretty easy to incorporate into sentences
It was scenes like this that brought a lot of sub viewers over to the dub. I remember so many people at school talking about how great the dub voices of Gara, Pain, Madara, and Itachi were. Since the sub was far ahead of the dub many who wanted to rewatch the series got into the dub also.
Pervy Sage voice is really goofy in English, but he was being serious right here.

Just Some thoughts about Pains Speech There's No Spoilers Guys:
Pain's ideologies are feasible, they are reasonable things to do. Pain isnt contradicting himself when he starts referring to himself as "an ordinary Man" (he's dropping his pretense of beeing a "God" to truly have a heart-to-heart conversation with naruto as fellow disciples because he truly wants Naruto to understand his motives and see things from his perspectives). Actually nagato means That Pain is a god, while him a Man. We as the audience generally or all of Us side with Naruto and the hidden leaf because they're the "main characters" of the story. But Pain is "GIVING VOICE" to others here in the world that also suffer.
I totally agree when Pain says "Humans are not the most intelligent creatures", due to the fact that we're essently a virus on the planet because we literatelly destroy other species and the environment of our planet, so That's right, biologically speaking Pain is more than 100% correct.
On the other hand, From our perspective (human perspective) Pain is mad because he wants to Destroy nations and people? ( but That's The same thing the Leaf has done and Big countries do today in our real world as well, How Can You possibly deny That?
Why is it ONLY Fair And OK for the hidden Leaf to have peace and justice when everybody else in The world also suffer Pain??

Pain is calling out the hipocrisy Naruto and The Leaf are trying to justify themselves (That part When pain talked to Tsunade, he said "Your peace has Only brought violence upon us all" That's what he means, That they (The Leaf) are hypocrites, which is true indeed.
Pain's Idea for achieving peace is MAD (mutually assured destruction), which is the same system thats in place in OUR REAL WORLD today to deter nuclear War. He wants a world where M.A.D will keep the peace for a while and when it breaks, when people use tail beasts, they"ll experience pain again, and That pain will force them to Go back to the period of peace. This will continue over and over, that pain will keep humanities violent Nature in check, allowing peace to exist. You can definitely disagree with Pain's ideias of achieving peace because they're Pretty extreme from our perspective, however with his speech You Just can't, because he's spitting Facts here. Pain's character is a masterpiece completely, he's a character Very grounded in realism. An Epic Villain. For me he's One of The Best Creations in all fiction honestly, Everything about Pain's character is so well done. He's so sick dude. He gave The Best Arc to The Entire series, this masterpiece right here.

Glad to hear you guys gave it a chance, I grew up with the Japanese version myself but watch the pain arc strictly dubbed because I prefer Troy Baker's portrayal. BTW, it sounds like the clip you guys are watching's audio was slightly altered (to avoid copyright I'm assuming?), as those pitches don't exactly match with what I remember.
I do think it’s a good idea to keep watching the sub version just for consistency, but I think it’d be worth doing a video reacting to some of the best dub clips. I can list some of my favourites here just off the top of my head, although obviously it’s your choice which to react to:
- Granny Chiyo’s monologue at the end of “Impossible Dream”
- Zabuza talking about Haku after his death (land of waves)
- The Uchiha clan’s slaughter & what Itachi says to Sasuke (Itachi’s VA is stellar here)
- Gaara vs Sasuke in chunin exams (the Gaara scream)
- Jiraiya recounting his near death experience from Naruto’s four tails
- Sakura begging Sasuke to stay before he defects from the village
- Shikamaru’s breakdown after Asuma’s funeral
- Literally any montage of Naruto one-liners lol
- Tobi’s best moments

The thing is that IN MY OPINION pain dub doesnt sound like he's in pain,he sounds just like an angry villain with a deep voice,like the va's just reading the script .In sub i can feel his emotion ,even more when his voice kind of cracks when he says "Shinra Tensei" ..he sounds more done with the world in his speech,more dissapointed and thats what his character represents to me .I agree tho that pain dub sounds good but it just doesnt fit what Pain really stands for .Its ok tho i respect your opinion ❤

I used to think that, but I'm Swedish so I was already doing that kind of with English since nothing in Sweden is dubbed. But yeah, you learn to deal with it pretty fast and you'll do it automatically soon enough.

i had to train myself to be able to watch sub, i wasnt able to read and watch at the same exact time (which is the problem rob is describing). i found out rereading manga you already know on auto scroll is the best way, so even if you miss something its not important because you already know it.
find a speed that is most comfortable for you, then slowly increase your speed until you can read/see everything at your fastest speed possible. when you switch back to anime everything feels really slow and you have way more than enough time to read and watch everything happening all at once👍
(i personally take an extremely quick glance (sometimes a glance from peripheral vision) at the subtitles before i look back up and watch the scene, i actually read all of the dialogue in my head while the person is talking👍 its kind of like taking a quick photo with my mind, i see the dialogue in my head so i barely ever have to actually stare at the subtitles)
I’m assuming that this video is on youtube and they made the audio deeper so they won’t get copyrighted. even tho it’s just a little deeper than the original it’s still a little weird lol
Yu yu hakusho is a MUST watch in the dub. That might be a great opportunity to do the dub experience

Judging Jiraiya’s voice off of one of his most sentimental and vulnerable moments as not being Pervy Sage just shows you guys should give Naruto a rewatch in dubs on your free time. I can’t get into Naruto subs very well but for dubs I can grasp every nuance

Madara's and pain's dub VAs are better than sub, Kakashi's and itachi's dub VAs are just as good. Other dub VAs may fall short sometime, but aren't necessarily bad, it's just you individual preference
