- Located in the county of Surrey, and around 40 miles southwest of central London, is the town of Haslemere.
Geographically, Haslemere is situated in between the Surrey Hills to the north and the South Downs National Park to the south, at the southwestern tip of Surrey where it borders West Sussex and Hampshire.
The first recorded reference of Haslemere dates back to 1221 from when it was awarded its first charter. A second charter was granted by Richard II in 1397, and a third was granted by Elizabeth I in 1596. Today, this special status is celebrated with the Charter fair, held once every two years in the High Street.
With the River Wey running just south of Haslemere town centre, a series of watermills were established around the medieval era. Historical industry in Haslemere has included wool and silk as cottage industries, and iron making, utilising the local watermills.
In 1859 the railway arrived in Haslemere. Today it is situated on the Portsmouth Direct Line around halfway between Woking and Portsmouth Harbour. Direct trains to London Waterloo take around one hour.
Haslemere's postcode, GU27, is the 10th most expensive postcode in Surrey (true as of January 2020 according to SurreyLive). Outside of the M25, only the Virginia Water and Windlesham areas of the county are more expensive.

I went to boarding school there and loved walking into town every Saturday for a little shopping. If I concentrate hard enough, I can even remember the smell even though it was decades ago. Btw, love that things pretty much look the same.
was the boarding school by any chance where branksome place is on hindhead road?
@haza9988 no, it was on Wispers Lane. The building is called Oak Hall and is now a senior living facility.
@@angelmorningstarr9504 Also went to school in Haslemere: primary day school at Hillside School and then boarding school in Hindhead.
I remember Wispers School clearly: a kid I played football with had a sister who went there. The school enjoyed an excellent reputation.
A very genuine and amazing town. It seems the place has remained unchanged for decades. Beautiful walk. One of your best. Thank you.
Thanks, yeah it was very peaceful out there.
Wow, that was a walk down memory lane. I lived there from age 6 months in 1956, until 1976. First at Three Gates Lane, then Bunch Lane, then Camelsdale Road.
Then you and I would have overlapped there for about 15 years, as my family moved to Haslemere in early 1958 and left in 1973.
We first lived in Longdene Road (opposite the railway station) before moving to a house on what was then Haste Hill but is now known as Tennyson's Ridge.
Did you attend Hillside School by any chance? It was located at the top of the High Street (A286), just after turning left on to the Petworth Road (B2131). Hillside was a primary school located on the north side of the Petworth Road - run by a couple of elderly ladies, named Ms Randall and Ms Welland - and the wooden gate through which we entered the schoolyard is still there, opposite the zebra crossing. The shop called "Hasleworks" is in the same building that the school shared, during its existence.
I loved Haslemere - it was a wonderful place in which to live and grow up: as a kid, there was never a shortage of things to do.
@@xetalq Did not go to Hillside. Had brief spell at Buclan's (I think that was the spelling), then Littlefield near Liphook, then Highfield.
Yes, Haslemere was a lovely place, I still remember so much about it. Nobbs for stationery, Reid's, the chemist, Denny Stone for men's clothes, Mr Boxhall, the hairdresser etc.
Its seems very quite, what do people actually do there? Where are the nearest big shops such as BandQ?
We are planning on moving to these areas
Are there any chavy youths in areas such as haslemere and hindhead?
No not at all!! If you go out around 11 there are rowdy people at most of the pubs, but a very safe and quiet area. A few kids wondering around but do no harm whatsoever. Not big crimes happen. Only a few stealing from the expensive shops. But a really nice place. Lives here for 9 years now.
I 🤍 my country!
Beautifully posh,😆💛
Certainly is!
Alright if you want a haircut or you visit charity shops or go to the theatre to see countless tribute bands of a tribute band. Otherwise it’s where you’d pass through to somewhere more interesting.
Yep. I vividly remember a Brown Bomber writing a ticket for a carelessly parked sports car with a Fortnum & Mason wicker basket attached on my morning walk when visiting friends once. 😜😁
Great place. But expensive I guess!
If you need to ask "How much?" you're on the wrong side of the tracks here. 😜😆
