You’re a good man. Thank you
I'm extremely shocked that Brandon answered the church question, yet I'm so glad he did. Even though I'm not a fan of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I really respect his answer and his support for the LGBTQ+ community.
If he didn't it wouldn't have really been an ask me ANYTHING
Could you give a time stamp? I’m curious what he said

do you have the time stamp for that quote?
@@gustavolamego9913 It’s in the answer to the question at 1:46:30. Edit: the actual quote is at 1:50:20.
I just want to say as an atheist, Sanderson's answer on religion was respectful and reasonable within his belief system, and sincerely expressed, and I greatly appreciated his point about ostracisism.
It gave me a lot to think about (not on the religion itself, no offense), but just on how to discuss religion with others.
Agreed, he took that admittedly loaded question with sincerity and grace, and I have a ton of respect for that even as a non-religious person.
The way he put it is very apt for many other parts of our modern society too.
Agreed... Though I'm a bit ignorant... What is ostracism or octracisism... How ever it's spelled
@@strydyrhellzrydyr1345 Exclusion from a group or society generally.
I always knew Sanderson had a respectful and intelligent view on religion from how he wrote Sazed.
I am so fucking proud of Brandon. This was an awesome AMA in general and the way he answered the church question was so good. Awesome job Brandon.
Brandon's answer on religion was really, really good. I couldn't have been able come up with such a nuanced, thoughtful response to such an accusatory question, when put on the spot like that. As an atheist myself, I also think it's important for people to come together and find common ground, rather than to divide and attack. Really appreciated hearing his thoughts here.
I have never been able to understand why people are so filled with hate towards religious people for having beliefs that differ from their own for a group that preaches tolerance holy hell do the not practice it
Happy to hear about Adolin getting a bigger role than expected. He is my second favorite character in Stormlight.
we stan our himbo
Im on the third book and although I prefer Kaladin and Dalinar, I feel giddy every time we get an Adolin chapter because they are ALWAYS great in some way 🤣 I think that the fact that Brandon only uses his POV when needed makes it so all of his chapters bang
Second to Lopen for me
I feel like for a lesser author he’d just be there as an obstacle to the inevitable Shallan/Kaladin romance, and he’d have something terribly wrong with him to break them up. I’m so happy with the story we got.
RIIIIGHT!? 😱
Brandon NAILED the question about the Church and LGBTQ community! As a member of the same church who has gone through very similar struggles as Brandon, especially since my sibling came out as bisexual and non-binary, I think he answered the question amazingly well.
Edit: I've now left the church over these and other issues, so there's that 😂
So, my takeaway from this is that i need to buy Elden ring. Damn it Brandon, i don't need you reinforcing my bad habits.. Still love you.
It's not my fault. They (the game developers) sent me a sword. I HAD to play it after they sent me a sword.

Hi Brando Sando!
First, my husband and I absolutely adore you.
Second, I believe the asker of the fanfiction question meant that you love your universes so much that it spurs you to continue creating content for it like authors of fanfiction do.
You are a true inspiration to authors like myself. Thank you for being such an amazing person and author.
1:33:00 This advice to ensure I am writing because I enjoy it and detach it from expectation of success has been immensely helpful to me. I got it from a video Brandon made a few years ago and it's really stuck with me.
Sanderson is closest thing internet has to a Mr. Rogers, and I mean that in the best way possible. The third person references are the only thing not received well
We just gotta get his fashion game on par with Mr. Rogers
Wow, very first question making me so hopeful! Brandon just casually talking like “WHEN stormlight is made into a TV show” - and goes into depth on what he’s looking for in TV/Movies.
Definitely a matter of time, but soo pumped.
P.S - apart from stormlight, I would absolutely loveee to see an adaptation of Wax and Wayne solving crimes out in the roughs :)
A Wax and Wayne adaptation I honestly feel would do better than a Stormlight one. Its smaller scale and I think something easier to work into a serial format.
@@hallaloth3112 agreed. I’ll take my allomancy cowboys over space cowboys any day. Wax+Wayne>Mando
Release the Stormlight Lore book! After everything else... And also don't spend your time editing it... I guess maybe actually you're making the smart choices... Anyways, love the books and the team. Thanks a million for the dreams
Maybe some day, but a lot of it isn't canon anymore--and a lot of the rest is spoilers for the series. So maybe when it's all done?
@@BrandSanderson it would be amazing seeing the finished product and all the lore that went behind it. Discarded or not 🤩

Thank you for staying true to yourself and your writing despite your success, I'm particularly thrilled that you are in a position--and have the desire--to be in complete control over your works being translated to screen. I'm always saddened and disappointed to have my favorite books ruined.
As a Catholic, I really appreciate Brandon's answer on religion and feel the same way about my Church.
Same. It is frustrating to me how such a prevailing idea is "you cannot/should not support an organization which has done bad things". Certainly we should be discerning but everyone messes up, and Brandon is totally right. Be as good as you can, own up when you mess up, when you know better do better.
@@DandDgamer problem is that it's not all in the past. Churches even still openly encourage oppression of segments of the population and will continue to do so.
What a stunningly good answer to the religion question. He both stands up for his belief and stands guard over the human beings who interact within and without it. Such accountability is sorely lacking in religion historically.
Thank you Brandon, you are a hero of mine.
Stunningly good is a bit of an overstatement. He’s still associating himself with some truly awful ideas on the political right.

first longer video ive watched on this channel and what a pleasure it was to listen! its great to get to hear your insight on things and how they correlate to your work!
Brandon didnt really need to answer that question, but man he did a good job at it.
I don't get this ... he doesn't "need" to answer any questions, that doesn't mean he should only answer nice safe questions that make everyone feel good. That's not life.
What question? Timestamp?
@@seanmorris1021 "that doesn't mean he should only answer nice safe questions" This is what MANY MANY people do. So it's refreshing that he is willing to answer these questions.
@@seanmorris1021 that is what most people do in these kind of things though.
It’s still unfortunate he associates himself with a place like byu.
It does make me question if I want to purchase his books, knowing the money will support religion and right wing politics.
35:20 Terry Pratchett said something very similar about his writing process - you have to treat it as a job and spend a number of hours every day (or perhaps every week day) writing. Even if what you write isn't very good, at least then you've got something to build on, rather than still staring at a blank page.
I love Brandon's work and though I don't agree with all parts of his answer to the religion question, I respect him greatly (even more than before) for not answering defensively or ignoring the challenge.
What a great answer to the LGBTQ question. A great example for everyone to be open minded at all times, there is always another perspective
If you listen to the BYU Classes you should also listen to writing excuses. It’s the same thing, but better because there are always multiple writers comparing their processes and ideas with each other, including Brandon.
Thank you so much for letting us listen to your lectures.
Brandon got a squad of savages to comb through his magic system. I'm freaking out.
I, as a Chilean, thought that lopen was Argentinian 😂. Nothing derogatory about it. 😇 Just what my brain thought 🐒(I actually hate that Argentinian-Chilean rivalry)
Nearly any other person would have avoided the religious question.
Not only did Brandon tackle it which was bold and brave, he answered it well and very respectfully to everyone which is nearly impossible to do.
If anyone was or is offended by anything Brandon believes they need to look at themselves for sure.
Respect to Brandon for sticking up for his religious views but at the same time giving a concise answer on his perception.
I was very interested in his answer at 8:02 for his religion and belies of LGBTQ people. When I learned of Sanderson and read his book and learned of his interests , SCI-FI FANTASY, I totally assumed he was an atheist.
Thank you for answering the question and how you attempt to advocate for these groups within these conservative spaces!

Thank you for writing The Way of Kings. It’s helped me so much. By far my favorite book.
Love that Brandon recognizes his strengths and weaknesses, and is actively working on his screenplay writing / adaptation skills. Stormlight, when it gets adapted, is going to be a well loved project.
I have always had trouble reconciling the views of Brandon’s church and knowing he tithes to that church as a very wealthy author, with my love of his books and who I sort of expect him to be given what he writes. So I was really happy that a reader addressed this directly and Brandon just head on addressed it. I am not 100% sure if I think it’s enough, but I really appreciate that y’all didn’t choose to skip over it. Because there’s a lot of icky stuff there that just seems so at odds with the way he writes and I have a lot of respect for your team for trying to answer this question. Much respect.
I too question if I want to support his work financially. Despite the apologetics, Byu is awful.
Well, the local library is always an option if you'd prefer to give less money to an author. It isn't zero money, but it's pretty darn close.
We all have to make hard choices in regards to ethics of how our money gets spent, these days it seems harder than ever. Best of luck, whatever you decide to do!
Listening to Brandon speak about writing and the industry is always impressive. He’s on top of his game and understands his industry on a deep intrinsic level
I want to see Dan's do some stories on Threnody and/or First of the Sun
--Adolin wasn't meant to be a main PoV? Super happy that that changed, I actually really really like Adolin as a character. He is SOLID.
-- Happy that fans figure things out because foreshadowing is laid out well? I wish more people in the creative would have that mindset. If your foreshadowing is done well, big reveals still have a massive payoff to those who figure it out. Got to listen to my fiance figure out the big reveals in Stranger Things (S4) as we were going through it because the foreshadowing was done so well, we had fun watching the reveals fall into place even though we'd already puzzled things out together.
As impossible as it is, I loved the wild BS+PR+GRRM(+JA) collab idea.
So cool to hear what you would like to change in your stories as you work on adapting them as movies and shows. Online fans tend to get super resistant about that stuff, as if nothing should ever be changed, but it seems like a lot of the time the authors would actually LOVE to change things. I feel like part of being a good author/creator is being able to think critically about your own work and really examine what could have been better in retrospect. And it's also cool that you're in a position to actually make those changes going forward working on adapting your stories
Changes that the author wants are very different from changes that hollywood wants.
@@lemurwrench6344 sure but a lot of the time there’s no way to know what the author would have wanted, usually because they’re dead. With Brandon it’s cool because he’s around to give his direct input, which is more the exception than the rule

Brandon was so close on the Korean eating UA-camrs. It is 먹방.
Ah, so it's a soft oh sound, not a hard u sound. That makes more sense. That's just "to eat," I believe.
@@BrandSanderson pretty much! Meokbang: 먹방 = 먹다 (eat) + 방송 (stream), food stream!
I actually think the baptisms are reasonable given the theology of the LDS Church. And what are the contradictory direction to Adam & Eve?
Anyways, one of the problems with beliefs that contradict Mormon doctrine is that Mormonism is a really holistic. All doctrine is said to come from a God who is infallible. With a protestant denomination, I might join because I generally agree but I often don't have to buy into the idea that there's a certain leadership and everything they declare official doctrine is correct.
Anybody else used brandon videos as a stress relief
I am so so SO pleased he shouted out Jane yolen and Guy Gavriel Kay as really great authors (who he doesn't know). They are among my favourites but I always feel they're a bit less well known...

I’m so excited to hear about the potential adaptations that could be made! I just got started on the Mistborn trilogy and I’m loving it so far!
1:55:20 - what I've always suspected, Brandon just proved and I am not surprised at all. What I've suspected about Brandon and what clearly distinguishes him from other modern authors is the intelligent way he approaches writing.
In business there is a spectrum you grade the processes a professional, a product, a company has. The spectrum is from 'immature' (chaos, lack of focus, inefficiency, error-prone, slow) to 'mature' (ordered, focused, efficient, robust, fast).
What Brandon describes in this answer is what is called 'refinement' of work. It is one principle that moves someone or something towards the 'mature' side.
You can write a book with just a stack of paper and cheap pencil -> it might take you 3 years
You can write a book with a software stack and process knowledge/mindset -> it might take you 3 months
That's a biiig difference between Brandon and George for example. We all know how talented both of them are, yet one sends books like a machine and the other has barely written a book in the past decade.
Keyword "maturity" as professionals. George is more towards the "immature" side, while Brandon is very much on the "mature" side.
I also think that Steelheart or Alcatraz are good places to start with Sanderson Novels. I find Steelheart attracts a lot of kids once they hear the premise.
For those wondering the fourth change in mistborn that Brando would do but that he couldn't remember is having Atium be allomantically burnable by anyone rather than just by mistborn and seers

Brandon characterized the early on question as being, "Bold but not insulting" that alleged that the Church of Jesus Christ "promotes purity culture, homophobia, and anti-antisemitism."
Brandon did a great job addressing the question, but I disagree that the question wasn't insulting. The question leveled a lot of loaded concepts in an accusatory manner, and if I talked to anyone I knew IRL that way, it definitely would cause trouble and defensiveness (and would be insulting).
But again, all props to Brandon for handling it so well.
I felt a little like that, his ability to not become defensive and instead to just comment levelly is something that will do a lot more good than anything else.

Will there be another UA-cam lecture from BYU posted from the upcoming semester(s)?
Would you consider adding the changes you mentioned about the stories you’ve written to the potential adaptations of your work?
I think it’s already been announced that some of the genders will change for two crew members in Mistborn. That might just be internet legend though.
Love your stuff!
1:05:42 - the word you are looking for is "discreet", i think, in that certain aspects of mental illnesses or their causes are quite difficult to spot
Can someone tell me what he is referring to.. what incident happened a few years back... Where the church made a mistake... Sorry... I would just love to know what happened... And what happened because of it...
I think that visibly supporting the LGBTQ+ community, in general and at BYU in particular, would make many people feel better about this. It’s hard to feel fully positive about the idea of changing the church from the inside when we’re not able to see that internal advocacy or monetary support, and therefore can’t properly see the impacts. That being said, I appreciate that Brandon is taking the time to think deeply about the topic, and to learn and grow towards greater allyship.
This is what is wrong with LGBT and how you turn the general public against yourselves. I understand you probably mean well, but this kind of policing behavior of what others should say and do that you're exhibiting (and a lot of LGBT community exhibits) is how they end up turning people against them. You're shooting yourself in the foot here.
