    The ladder unexpectedly decided to take off from the pontoon...this rope ladder saved the day as it is perfect until the replacement arrives! Thank you for making this video!!! 😊

      That's so great to hear! We used ours as safety equipment. When we lived in the Port Credit marina, we had a rope ladder and a Fox 40 whistle attached to our dock, such that if we went in, inadvertently, we would be able to get out. We never wanted to have to use them, but knew they were there.

    I just made my first rope ladder thanks to you. Six rungs and each rung is neater and tighter as I practiced technique. I've learned several knots from your videos. Thank you for making a positive difference in people's lives.

    Very good video, after surviving a house fire where the fire commisioner told us that we had a less than 5% chance of escaping, we know that having a PLAN saved our lives. This rope could save the lives of those who do not have access to a roof or ladder in an emergency; nice job!

    This video was fantastic. I was able on not time at all to construct a 6 wrung rope ladder with this amazing video. I like seeing videos on youtube that explain all the details, every step of the way. Thank you so much. This contributes to my back yard gym. So Excited!

    I got a nice smooth rope 1/2" made a two step ladder just like shown seems it will work great on kayak re-entering. I will test in the water next weekend but on land I got it all set up seemed to work.

    Hi megachickena, The rope Dave used in the video was 45 feet and made six or seven rungs. It depends how wide you have the rungs and how far apart they are. We suggest you practice with the rope you want to use and then extrapolate to determine how long the final rope should be. It uses a lot of rope. Angi

    Always wise to stock up on rope knowledge and skills. Forget gold investing, even when the market is dying, rope skills never de value !

  • @selfmadesailor
    @selfmadesailor  14 років тому +2

    Hi sniperboy, Dave used a 45 foot rope for the ladder in this video and it didn't make too many rungs. I suggest that you try a length of rope and make a short ladder. You can then adjust the width of the rungs or distance between them which suit you and then multiply it out to determine how much rope you would need for the final ladder. Angi

    Hi Peoplethought - It depends on how it's set up. If the standing ends at the bottom are secured, it should be fairly easy. If it's attached only at the top, it can be a challenge if you don't have good upper-body strength - on a boat, your legs tend to follow the hull's shape and extend under the boat unless you're in decent shape or the boat is moving - the water pressure when moving will actually make it easy to climb. I've used this on my own boats successfully for several years though.

    I needed some help with the initial part. I have Morrow's guide to knots, but the first step I wasn't sure. I didn't realize they wanted me to make a figure 8 knot out of the entire bight. I used shoelaces for practice, but it was still fun and can be scaled up easily.

    Hi Mfitz, In fact, last fall Dave built one, attached a line to it which would un-roll it easily, as well as a Fox40 whistle, and placed it in the slip beside us in the marina (where we live full-time). The previous month, a man had fallen in and drowned; we thought he might have had a chance had there been something for him to grab. Reaching up to grab a cleat and get out of the water, when weighed down by all your clothing, would be difficult, but grabbing the ladder would be easy. Angi

    It would make far more sense to alternate, left and right the way you wrap your rungs, that way when the rope ends, you use practically the same amount of rope for each rung all the way down

    • @wlcike
      @wlcike 9 років тому +3

      actually nope... you see you start with equal... the left goes around and ends up on the right side much shorter... now you have the longer side on the left again... if you did it the way you said it you would stop roughly in the middle with one side much longer than the other
