- A look at the former South Alloa Branch opened in 1850, and it's replacement the Alloa Railway of 1885.
These lines linked the town of Alloa to the mainline between Falkirk and Stirling. The South Alloa Branch required a ferry ride to reach Alloa. The Alloa Railway finally linked the town directly via a new bridge over the River Forth.
Station sites are explored at Airth, Throsk and South Alloa, and the intriguing Bandeath munitions depot. The lines were closed in sections between 1950 and 1978.

Thanks 👍 yes really interesting little line this
Something you might like to know is that that the original engines used in the Depot were fire-less steam engines. Because of the risk of fire around explosives, there was instead a boiler house with two huge boilers which produced steam to be forced under pressure into two engines. These would then pull the trains (for both munitions/supplies and carriages for workers) until the pressure reduced. The engine drivers had to judge the moment right to ensure they were back at the engine shed refilling point before the steam ran out and stranded them. Sadly, the engines had been replaced by diesels by the time our family came to Throsk in the early 60s.
Many thanks for the info. I've seen a couple of these in museums in the past. Interesting insight into how they were operated
