I often wondered this too. When i got baptised i was expecting to feel something miraculous, like a new person but in truth i didnt feel any different at all.
I began questioning if it was "done right" and whether i was accepted by God. I expected my sinful ways to stop but it didn't. I believed my past sins were cleansed but i thought I'd have this inmediate change of self where i would be dead to sin from then on.
‭Acts 2:38 - Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
In time i have felt a process of cleansing though, a slow renewal of heart and mind. I still have room for improvement for sure and i realise i need to play my part and denying myself while i ask God to help me

Baptism doesn't make us a new creature. The Blood of Jesus makes us a new creature. Only when the Blood of Jesus is applied to our heart will the Holy Ghost take residence in our temple.

@truthmonger7 What does baptism do, if anything?

@@BibleAnswerMan Anytime we exercise our faith in the Word of God by doing/living outwardly the Word of God, our faith is strengthened. Baptism, communion, foot-washing, etc. all point us to Jesus, and they are the answer / outworking of our faith in Him.
In 1 Corinthians 10:1-2 God baptized Israel collectively (in the sea). But He only did so after they were delivered by the Blood of the Lamb at the original Passover.
In Romans 6:1-6 and 1 Corinthians 15:29 the Script says that Baptism (going down) symbolizes our death (to self/sin) just as being raised symbolizes the Resurrection. Both of which are works attributed to the Holy Spirit. How we live our life after we are saved (regeneration) is a reflection of the faith that now governs us inwardly. In John 6:44 the work of being drawn by the Father (to Jesus) is a work attributed to the Holy Spirit. When we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit then baptizes us into Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. (Rom 6)
Jesus then baptizes us into the Holy Spirit. (Matt 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, John 1:33)
No living person today has been buried and resurrected bodily... as the Script suggests. But the rites we are given in the New Testament point to some unfulfilled aspect of God's work for humanity, which in this case is the Resurrection. We point, by our actions, to something God is yet to fulfill of His Word. Contrarywise, the rite of circumcision pointed to God's promise to Abraham that "...all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him..." (Gen 18:18) This promise has been fulfilled by Jesus Christ and cannot be fulfilled by any other. So, we are not given the rite of circumcision in the New Covenant. The Levirate law of marriage is another example of a law (Moses and pre-Moses) that has seen fulfillment By Jesus Christ and is no longer required today.
The rites, rules, or laws effected by the New Covenant all point to some unfulfilled aspect of God's promises (vows) to humanity... especially to His bride. For example: If God allowed adultery to happen between husbands and wives, then He also would have to allow His Bride to commit idolatry against Him.
We are to be the living Word of God on the earth today... as flawed as we are. Peace to all.
