This is proof that Metallica write really great songs - when you can take the structure of the music and translate it into a completely different genre while retaining the emotional pathos of the original. Metallica songs have been translated into Classical and Bluegrass versions that I know of and both are nearly as spectacular as the original. Great job.
Bluegrass...the heavy metal of folk music: 1. Ensemble approach, & each player is expected to be able to really play their instruments 2. Shredding solos 3. Banjos are, literally, made of heavy metal 4. Epic scope 5. Longevity. Bands are more likely to be healthy and play good music into their older years, unlike their respective cousins (country, rock) that burn themselves out on drugs and partying.
i just stumbled upon iron horse and i just can't stop listening to these covers... i'm a huge metallica fan and i have never listened to any bluegrass music, but for some reason i just love this... great work!
i AGREE they are really good! Like to think that I've evolved a bit from my teenage years now in my 50's no longer interested in the head banger stuff of the past that grew up on and loved back in those days. Great New Twist on something of my past. Thank you!! Now I am having my husband listen. :)
This is like finding an incredible blend, a new blend from the same ingredients. I am enjoying this...and I was never a Metallica fan. Hello this is a trip.
Okay. i've figured out why this works so well. Metal and Bluegrass as genrée share a common goal: To take their respective root genres and play the instruments with more range in tone and tempo, with more complex melodies and darker lyrics, often about death, corruption and the like. So in conclusion, Bluegrass in general is metal as fuck. That's why it works.
I whole heartedly agree! I liked Metallica when I was in high school (I still like them now, but you know how we change). I'm into bluegrass now. This is perfect. I wish they had a fiddle player, but I'm not complaining.
This.. wow... it fits.. it's great, but for some reason I can't stop grinning/laughing... It's a clever way to translate Metallica music... Beautiful tribute...
My band covered this song and I played fiddle instead of mandolin. It was so much fun!! It's an awesome song...it was born to become bluegrass. }:}~ God bless Iron Horse! =D
Wow, this was found via figuring out the band that does the At the Gates bluegrass cover isn't exclusive to their one track. This is awesome. Again, to what an earlier poster said this is such a well written song (and pretty much anything pre-black album is) that is can transcend genres without a hiccup.
You're damn near spot on. Look up interviews with Bill Monroe and Ricky Skaggs about bluegrass to get the a more rounded view of what bluegrass is. Perhaps attend the bluegrass festival in Rosine, KY.
@jackaroe2293 i think during the black album they stopped copying dave mustaines work on the kill em all album and started doing what they wanted to do
Any Song can be translated into a diffrent style and still keep the same energy and pacing as the original. Look up the Pickin' On series on I-Tunes. Look for Pickin' On the 80's. They redid Were Not Gonna Take It and The Final Countdown. Plus alot of other 80's tunes. They all sound pretty Awsome as a Blugrass tune.
I liked all of those songs, especially the nocturne, and they certainly contained something complex (song structure, time signature, etc) but I'm not entirely sure we share the same definition of a melody, as I heard no complex ones in any of them. As for my own experience of metal, it's mostly Metallica, Iron maiden and so on. Which is radio metal I guess, though as this is a cover of a Metallica song I don't know why that wouldn't be enough.
If you have anything interesting to say, then say it. If not, chill out, it was just a question. Unrelated: This is definitely one of their best covers.

To be honest, I think I might actually like this more than the original, as much as I love the original...

zerospacer i agree 100%
Metallica is my favorite band of all time. Most bands can't cover their songs well, but this is just mind blowing. Well done. METALLICA FOR LIFE!
One of the best tunes in the universe IMHO
wow, after almost 20 years iI'm enjoying listening to metallica again!
i just stumbled upon iron horse and i just can't stop listening to these covers... i'm a huge metallica fan and i have never listened to any bluegrass music, but for some reason i just love this... great work!
Oh my gosh! For my love of blugrass. I have never heard of this! Awesome!
This is good in bluegrass style. I am a Metallica fan but an even bigger bluegrass lover. Those minor chords and the lyrics are a perfect combo.
Why is this so good??
I like metallica, and bluegrass, and this just perfectly baked them together.
One of my favourite songs of all-time.
The best of both worlds. True Bluegrass sound, and awesome metallica lyrics
Wow!!!! I would never have thought some one would do this bluegrass style. True grass here !

Lol after 35 (I'm almost 40) headbanging is something you do when you slip in the tub and gotta catch yourself.
Great! It's adding so much to the original music! The bluegrass style totally sticks with the Metallica style and makes it ten times better! Bravo!
This is like finding an incredible blend, a new blend from the same ingredients. I am enjoying this...and I was never a Metallica fan. Hello this is a trip.
extremely well done. normally metallica covers tend to be senseless, but this one... respect!

Papa Roach's Between Angels and Insects fits the opening :p. It popped in my head instantly.
