Watching your video tonight after being asked by a supervisor, "Why do I keep sabotaging myself?" and mentioning my wardrobe choices as a point of concern. As I watched her mouth move, I mentally replayed your video about losing your job ahead of quitting. Your videos are encouraging many including myself. Thank you for being imperfectly perfect and loving it! As far as style, I still need baby Jesus to come through because I am in my mid 40s, plus sized and living on a budget in NYC with a child in college. Right now, my style is NONCOMMITTALWHATEVERFITSBESTTHATDAY. I'm still making missteps but they are decreasing with your help. Thanks again

Orlonda Spencer-Williams I have to disagree with Karen-what she says does not apply to work unless you are in a creative field. Your clothes and the way you dress can keep you from advancing in the work world. Similarly dressing for the job you want can help you be perceived as a go getter and as the lady boss. As a plus size woman in NYC thrift stores are your friend and can help you look professional. Being cash strapped isnt a reason not to look professional. I know cause I have been there.

Anastasia Renaud it is because of Karen's thrift finds I have been able rebuild a personalized wardrobe without relying on Lane Bryant, Ashley Stewart and Old Navy. I am curvy like the character Joan (I think) from the show Mad Men. Whether I wear a pant suit, dress or jeans, some people can't stop judging and making their opinion apparent. To that I say, the quality of my work, longevity on the job and confidence exuded speak for me. I am happier when I shop now and feel better splurging at Nordstrom's and Bloomingdale's with common sense in tow because I know to even it out with pre-loved and/or interchangeable accessories. That's what I meant and take from Karen's videos.

my style is minimalist and I always stick to the 2 or 3 colour rule. I also try to not rush into buying anything, so I compile a basket of items online and then revisit it a few times, editing it each time until I have the items I really love. It's all too easy to get seduced by sites, especially if there's a sale on and I've got lots of clothes and shoes I barely wear as I bought them in the sales. A waste of money. I now try to buy less and save up for good quality, classic investment pieces which fit into my own aesthetic.

true ! 2 or 3 colors, or sometimes 1 color shade like only shades of beiges (or grey ;D) are the key

Oh my God I LOVE the sentiments expressed in this video. I HATE when people try to box me up into a look or a style. My style evolves and changes frequently and I love the challenge of using my same items in various ways. That’s what my channel is all about.

I'm so glad that you mention the age thing ! I don't give a crap anymore , i wear what i want ! It has taken me 54 years to attain the confidence to do so ! I don't dress a ( style ) I dress by my mood ! You could say i mostly am in a boho style , around the house its all about comfort . I love your channel, Thank You so much for sharing the vintage shops & the NY back drop ! Love you ; )

Great tips! Just the other day I was reading a fashion magazine that gave advice on what to wear in each decade and ironically I picked out things in 20s, 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s I liked a lot more than the offerings of the 30s which is my decade. If what I'm wearing makes me uncomfortable or if I have to mess with it all the time, I'm probably going to get rid of it. A big part of looking fantastic is feeling fantastic. If you're wearing designer clothing but feel awful or it's not a good fit it's going to show and the person wearing the Target dress who feels confident and fits her well is going to end up looking better.

I don't like to wear anything that I have to keep fiddling with or adjusting as I wear it! Karen you have two spires my love of fashion. I'm back into choosing great and interesting outfits, ways of wearing clothes that is a little different to the norm. I lost it for about a decade! I love layering and odd combos and I love boots with float clothes. I love lingerie as outerwear with layers over, beautiful lush fabrics and patterns. Vintage mixed with designer or simple basics. Thanks for lighting the fire again!

Sometimes when I am looking to add to my wardrobe I will have selected something that I own which I really like but it wasn't getting worn much because it didn't have the right items to go with it. I will wear that item on a shopping trip (or put it in my bag to go with me to fitting rooms) Then I will shop to create an outfit I am happy with that goes with that underused item.

I rarely comment on you tube but your style advice is so spot on and refreshing!!! Love your videos! I agree with your advice to never let anyone tell you what your style is or should be. When your young I feel like this is the advice that people should hear the most, as most of us care too much what others think of our clothing.

  • @lfkilcran

Your videos are always a joy to watch as you connect so well to those of us watching. I feel I am sitting in a chair, in that room, nodding my head at everything you are saying. I have been playing with style for decades now...before the advent of charge cards and the internet....before fast fashion. I purchased expensive European designers in small boutiques through a layaway plan. Here is what I can share....I use to cut out ERTE fashion paper dolls. I loved the silhouettes he created. There was an Asian influence and the long fluid lines were dripping with elegance and style I still have those paper dolls! SILHOUETTE is what I look at first. I look at the shapes and proportion of those shapes in a silhouette. I have adopted...as I am 5'2" and 1/2 inch in height a definite style proportion.....1/3 (or less) to 2/3 OR a 2/3 to 1/3. High waists with cropped kimono tops...(arms covered). I love harem pants and fluid skirts. Maxi dress are always easy to style.. I like black & white, monochromatic...and your color 1-2-3 rules...although my dark florals may have dabs of several colors in them...the pattern is usually small, but I have more options of which color to pull out. I usually wear my hair up and my long fluid pants/skirts...are hiding my platforms!

Hey Karen! I love that you talked about dressing for yourself and don't worry about your age. I'm an older gal and I sometimes wonder if I should wear something that is too young. I know I should not bare my midriff, it is not good. I carry my capsule wardrobe in my handbag. I can check off something I purchase and at the bottom, colors I need to add. I also look at an item and mentally wonder if it will go with other shoes, jewelry, handbags, jackets, etc. I have to love it before I buy it. I don't wear a lot of prints, mostly solids. This summer I have added some prints but I like the classic solids. Love the video with the style pics from those classic people.

I totally agree with you on sizing and not being ruled by a size that you think you are. Today I went to a thrift/vintage store and the sizing there is all over the place,so look at sizes you don't think will work for you because you might find a gem! I bought a pair of Italian made leather chelsea style boots in great condition today and the size on them was 6 and I am an 8 but they fit like a glove.

I've said this before, but my #1 "rule" is: it's all about SHOES. I decide what's on my feet - everything else FOLLOWS. #2 is long, visual lines (skinny ankle jeans, tube skirt, long dress, long blazer). #3 is COLOR, and I have a very particular palette (no black, no white and all colors MUST flatter my skin tone) and this "rule" is unbreakable. Appreciate the question - I just answered a question for myself that I didn't ever think to ask!

I fully agree with you - don't let others impose their style on you. However, there are times when we have blind spots and others can offer some really invaluable tips. For instance, one of my most cherished pieces is a watch with a white, leather band that I would have never picked out for myself. A close friend got it for me for Christmas one year and I love every minute (pun intended) I wear it.

When I moved to Honolulu from NYC I was confronted with a style of casualness that I just could not get behind.. It took me about a year to "develop" my own type of casual. Sundresses (mostly darker colors with a design) and comfy sandals (Tevas in many colors) are now my go to items. While you don't see me in shorts all that often, I only wear two piece bathing suits (even thought I'm a bit chunky). Hawaii is a place that no matter you size or age you wear what you want. This year I've add a bit more color getting some yellow and bright red in my wardrobe. Thank you for your always fun and informative videos. Much Aloha to you and Michael. PS: You look gorgeous.

Hi Karen, you are speaking to my heart. I've always known what looked good on me, but I never gave myself expressive freedom until about 4 years ago (I'm 51 now). Today, dressing up is a mini celebration of me (even if I don't get it 100 percent all of the time). My only issue today is just dealing with my breasts - I've had kids, so they are not so perky and I have to wear a bra. Love you! Keep up the great work! You are my inspiration. Really want to start my own lifestyle channel - would love some tips if you are open to it.

My real tip for the hopeless cases (like I’ve been) is to buy solid colors and you’ll find everything matching in your closet and you’ll get ready faster. Then, if you add a floral it will still go with that light grey summer skirt, or those black linen pants. I’ve just started to make various outfits on 1 hanger, that are always ready. Good hangers help with this. I have about 5 now and I know they work. By getting all my clothes out and really looking at them I found the missing item in my wardrobe which turned out to be button down blouses. So I looked in an old closet, found a few with tags on them and they are ready to add to my daily “what to wear??” issues. Like cardigan sweaters (jumpers, for UK) these blouses cover up without being bulky and hot.

My version of the 2-3 colour rule applies to my entire wardrobe. Navy and white with an accent for summer, black and white with an accent for winter. Makes shopping sooo much easier. I buy navy and/or white basics and then chose a colour for impact, depending on what colours are available in the stores. Any version of pink works great with my complexion. Everything ends up going with everything colourwise. Of course, as with all rules, I occasionally love something so much I break my own rule - only if it looks spectacular.
And I agree emphatically with you on the size thing. Doesn't matter what the tag says, if it fits, wear it.

This was soooooo informative! My style has changed over the years -- less fussy and much more casual, but pulled together with really quality pieces and my jewelry is simpler, but classier, like diamond studs, really great watch and statement rings. Huge takeaway -- don't worry about sizing; wear what fits well!✌

Re sizing, especially sale items. I find I can go up or down in sizing when trying on sale items and figured out that is why they’re on sale, as they have been sized wrongly!!🙀

That dress is perfect on you!!! ⭐️⭐️😍 I love how you emphasize doing your own thing. 👏🏻👏🏻 I try many styles but always gravitate back to the same core pieces I’ve worn since high school. Jeans, jean shirt, overalls, boots, white tees and frilly dresses. And always vneck everything cause Im very full busted. ❤️

The age thing is a drag. I do have unique style. Sizes are silly. Look at the garment cut etc. but dressing for my age is constricting for me. Any suggestions guys?

caylx corolla , the trick I use is the opposite effect, if I wear anything that is considered young, I wear something conservative or mature with it. Example, if I wear a Superman T-shirt, I will pair it with a tuxedo black jacket and a pair of dark jeans. I also pair opposites allot. So if I have a girly top on I will balance it with a pair of leather pants or skirt. Hope this helps.

caylx corolla I agree - I basically don’t look at clothes as age appropriate but more as how a particular style or garment will look on me at this age. I realize as I get older that I can’t wear anything and expect to look good - but I still don’t have to dress like a frump or in clothes with no style that just basically says, ‘I’m not naked’ and that’s where the style part ends. LOL. I enjoy fashion too much to let people put rules on me as I age and I’ll bet as time goes on, the younger gals are going to change all this as they age.

Calyx Corolla, if you look at the Advanced Style ladies of New York, they embrace their bodies and their age and dress creatively but with style.

caylx corolla I agree but I do it anyway and because of I do I notice that it gives other women the courage to dress their personality instead of their age too! We pioneers have to take courage and refuse to be limited by the past! I hope this helps! 😁

Fashion and style having been a playground of mine spanning the 50’s to the present, I choose to dress however I feel that day. The only time I rein myself in a tad is when I see my adult children. Ha ha ha! All in the name of fun! Why not! I did enjoy watching the documentary Advanced Style and I am happy to see the ladies enjoying themselves. I myself like to mix prints, use belts, scarves, layer bralettes under dresses, jeans under dresses and skirts, pair frilly tops with distressed jeans etc. The only caveat is do not highlight any body parts that no longer look good. No jeans with holes at the knees if the knees are puffy and wrinkly. No bare shoulder tops if the shoulders are not slender. Well that’s just me. Please take what you like if any and leave the rest.

I love your videos. How about doing a look book with Michael and his style of dressing. Or how about how to wear the appropriate jewelry with an outfit. I personally love the layered look with beads and wrap bracelets. Keep them coming. You’re such an inspiration.
