This was a true story. My dad was serving his mandatory military service and was a couple weeks away from finishing his military service. After the helicopters spotted the north korean submarine, my dad's division was sent to look out for any north korean soldiers near the dmz in the forest also because a North Korean sniper killed a south korean general when this all happened. My dad told me he had no sleep and for 3 days he was looking for any north koreans in the forests. North Korea sent some soldiers near the dmz but all of them were killed by the south korean rangers.

Also NK didnt send anybody near the borders. Those who were killed by SK Special Forces, who I believe you were referring to, were the NK commandos who were trying to escape.

1973, my dad and I were fishing off the coast of Washington state.
Neah Bay was our home at the time.
We were running deep down-lines with about 40 pound weight, leaders with cut bait every 10 feet.
Something grabbed our down-line, spun us around before it broke.
About 60 feet of down-line had been lost; big sharks do that all the time.
Two hours later, we see a sub on the surface, just the 'sail' sticking out of the water.
Three crewmen were cutting a thin steel cable that had gotten tangled on the boat...our down-line!
    We waved, they waved back.
    I love the open ocean!

Soldier Lee Kwang-soo, the last survivor of the incident, works as a political officer at the Chungmo Gong Leadership Center, an institution affiliated with the Naval Education Command after defecting.
In addition, several decades after this incident, in 2016, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the incident, he met the policeman who arrested him and showed a deep friendship.

It deeply touched me to know that South Korea has a dedicated cemetery for North Korean bodies. It's nice to think that they made the gesture of "hey, if you guys are ever freed from your tyrannical dictator and want to recover the remains of your loved ones, we've got them here for you."
Then, in the next breath, I had to keep myself from punching a screen because - of course - NK had to pull a "NUH-UH! You can't quit, because I already fired you!" move.
The history of humanity, folks. Sometimes deeply moving, often deeply petty. *sigh*

5:50 Back in 2010, I was stationed in NAF Atsugi, Japan, as a US Navy F/A-18 Hornet Electrician with the "Eagles" of Strike Fighter Squadron 115 (VFA-115).
My carrier, the George Washington ("G-Dub"), as well as CAG-5 (the onboard air wing) were called a few months later to conduct patrols throughout the Sea of Japan in an effort to help stabilize the relations between the two Korea's.
We were supposed to fly out on July 2010 after what we all expected to be a very short deployment. But, alas, we were to do a full-on combat cruise throughout WESTPAC.
This incident is one I will never forget!

    • @absalomdraconis

Fancy (or not so fancy) knives welded (or maybe bolted) to their hulls. One challenge is that you want them for the sail as well, and you also have to worry about antennas & periscopes, I'm not certain that it's a fully solved problem. As for propellers, you basically need cowlings and a bit of luck... or enough power to rip the thing to shreds, whichever you can get to work. Fortunately, nets aren't _that_ common.
In WW2 (and probably WW1), ports would actually have dedicated anti-submarine nets to catch submarines.

Wow...I didn't even know the sub surfaced and the crew tried to cut the nets off. As far as I can remember, when the media reported on the incident immediately after the incident, they did not mention any part about the Coast Guard trying to communicate with the sub. They only mentioned that the sub got caught in a giant fishing net and got dragged by the fishing boat and eventually sank. I watched the salvaging effort go down, and it was rather impressive - they attached several (around four I think) balloons to the sub, and had it inflated to float it to the surface surface.
