  • Sound Recording of Southend Airport in 1973, by my Dad (with a 4 year old me in tow!)standing on the edge of the Golf Course under the approach.
I haven't edited the sound, the full file is 12 minutes long, so will re-do the video when I get time to edit it down

Channel airways was my very first civilian airline I flew on and that was in 1967 from southend to ostend on a viscount . Great days of aviation .

Mine first commercial flight was Channel Airways to Jersey - Viscount - what an experience for a 18 year old in those days.

That brought back so many memories, standing on the 'waving off terrace ' just opposite the bar .

I am sure in that still with the bus and coaches in it there are two men just to the bottom right of the photo below the man with the two kids with the man on the left with a blue shirt on being some form of security man and the one on the right being a Channel Airways employee as in summer time all male uniformed staff donned a white top to their caps looking like a custom officers and from his stance it looking very much like Channels Southend Station manager Mr Ray Jarvis as I met him a couple of times when I went to EGMC as I was based in Jersey with Channel from around 1963 till its demise in March 1972. Peter Coupe, former senior Traffic Officer with Channel in Jersey back in those good old days of commercial aviation as it was at grass roots level !!!! lol.

Interested in where you got the photographs from as a lot of them are the same as the originals in my collection?

Hi Graham, most are from my Father's collection which I assumed were his originals and some postcards from Southend & Channel Airways

@@atkinsjs Quite a number of the photos were taken by Ken Woolcott who was the official Southend Airport photographer in the sixties. I used to go to his studio in London Road and go through boxes of his glass negatives. Really sad that I couldn't afford to have more developed.

@@grahammee Ahh that probably explains it then, as Channel would have probably paid for a lot of them then my Grandfather would have had the orginals from Ken
