@@johnbuckles1344 She wasn't scrapped till 58. I never understood why they kept her so long if not to save her as a museum. She was never considered for the upgrades such as the Essex Class recieved. Shameful what happened to her...
@@uplink5 I totally agree. As for why it took so long to scrap her, that's easy. At the end of the war our industries were producing huge mounts of gear. All these surplus ships headed for the scrapyard meant that the domestic steel industry could face a glut of steel on the market, depressing prices. Plus our shipyards only have so much capacity and pierside space devoted to dismantling. Here in Bay Area years ago we had what the locals called the "Mothball Fleet", just north of Carquinez Bridge. Here scores of cruisers, light carriers, destroyers and miscellaneous support ships were moored for long term storage. I think the idea at first was to hold them in reserve just in case we needed them again, but after 20 years it became obvious that these vessels were too old and spare parts were not available, so they just sat. About 2 or 3 a year would disappear, headed for the scrapyard. Long story short, they weren't scrapped right away because all that steel would have collapsed the domestic steel industry, so they were fed into the system in small doses. Cheers
