    I sailed with the USS Kennedy (CVN-67) Carrier Battle Group in the summer of 1988 on our way to a six month deployment to the Mediterranean. Seventeen ships sailed in formation during the Atlantic crossing. It was such a sight to behold.

      Now, the carriers groups saile with only a hand full of escorts. We need more frigates, destroyer, submarines, as well as Carriers. Basically, we have to double our production if we are not to completely fail at the job of the Navy.

      USS Kennedy back then was a fossil fueled carrier, therefore it was CV-67 not a CVN

    CVN 65 USS ENTERPRISE was the first. It had eight nuclear reactors and displaced 120. I know because I was on it for over 3 years as a naval engineer. it also had a hole in the bottom of it that you could drive a bus through but it still did 31 knots! The keel of the original Enterprise was also used for the new Enterprise . I'm looking forward to seeing THAT one.

      PCU John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) is the second aircraft carrier in the Ford Class, the first new class in more than 40 years.
      CVN 79 is also the second aircraft carrier to honor President John F. Kennedy for a lifetime of service to the nation. The first USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) aircraft carrier served the fleet for over 50 years before decommissioning in 2007. John F. Kennedy wore our nation's uniform as a Navy Lieutenant during World War II before serving as the 35th President of the United States from January 1961 to November 1963.

    One of the problems with the steam catapults is the acceleration rate decreases as it goes down the rail. Just like a bullet going down a barrel, 90% of the acceleration is in the first half of the barrel. On the electric cat, the force is the same meaning the initial force is lower at the beginning but greater at the end. The F-35 can have drop tanks on the wings but they can not be steam launched with out damaging the wings. Both the Ford and Kennedy, the drop tanks can be fuel without damaging the wings.

Built before the war started, it was in almost all major battles in the Pacific untilbattle damage forced it out of service just before the war ended!

    • @johnbuckles1344
      @johnbuckles1344 17 днів тому +1

      @@uplink5 I totally agree. As for why it took so long to scrap her, that's easy. At the end of the war our industries were producing huge mounts of gear. All these surplus ships headed for the scrapyard meant that the domestic steel industry could face a glut of steel on the market, depressing prices. Plus our shipyards only have so much capacity and pierside space devoted to dismantling. Here in Bay Area years ago we had what the locals called the "Mothball Fleet", just north of Carquinez Bridge. Here scores of cruisers, light carriers, destroyers and miscellaneous support ships were moored for long term storage. I think the idea at first was to hold them in reserve just in case we needed them again, but after 20 years it became obvious that these vessels were too old and spare parts were not available, so they just sat. About 2 or 3 a year would disappear, headed for the scrapyard. Long story short, they weren't scrapped right away because all that steel would have collapsed the domestic steel industry, so they were fed into the system in small doses. Cheers

      About 5-6 years ago the Navy used the old decommed USS America for live fire exercises to see how vulnerable our ships might be. It took 3 days of intensive bombardment with just about every weapon imaginable to send her down. And, she had no damage control parties aboard during the exercises, they would periodically cease firing and go aboard to examine damages. USS America was an older, conventionallly powered ship, far away from today's modern carriers. It would take way more than a hypersonic missile to sink one. Unless the hyper is carrying a tactical nuclear warhead, nothing would survive that.

      Right, everyone that can is building or wanting to build carriers which makes me think why countries would spend billions on such "obsolete" fat floating targets. I mean, sorry but that is a laughable take. A carrier doesn't just float around by itself without defenses waiting to be hit.

      @@rickjames18 Dont anyone believe all the hype. (pun intended) Hypersonic missles can go extremely fast and hit ships, but they cannot do them both at the same time. They can be either hypersonic or low observable but, not in tandem. Traveling at hypersonic speeds creates a plasma layer that blocks radar signals. They have to slow down to track moving ships which makes them vulnerable. They are also highly observable... They are quite dangerous but moreso to stationary targets. Mobile targets are sill threatened but there are limitations.

      Right, except for some odd reason almost all experts would be laughing at such a comment. The evidence is also clear, US weapons are taking almost half of the global arms deals because experts from across the world agree US weapons are the best. Russia weapons have lost huge profits because those same experts and countries no longer trust Russian trash. At least not like they did before the war in Ukraine made it obvious western weapons were far far better. Just look at the decline in Russian weapons sales across the board. Anyone with half a brain will just laugh at such a comment. No amount of cope will change this.
