The other is unlucky group B which I got from a local neighbor who gave out rosemary trimmings from their garden. Group B was planted in January. Today majority of group B plants have died even though they share the same plant bed as group A. Started with 10 trimmings and now I'm down to 3 left from group B and they look like they're going to all die out. Maybe it's because I over watered them based on the brown tip of the leaves, but Group A, on the other hand, seems to be sprouting nicely as I can see new small leaves growing. I don't water them every day. I try to water them every other day - sometimes skip watering 2-3 days if it's foggy or cloudy. It doesn't rain in my area often. I live on top of a hill where it's a mix of sun and fog. I juts want to know how to read rosemary behaviors without having to buy all these gadgets to measure the soil, etc.

But the key thing to do is to always gauge their basic needs...rosemary should get more sun than water so... by skipping the watering every 2-3 days is the way to go! But in the mean time, ensure it gets the sun it needs. If you can balance both these together...the rosemary will thrive :)

The rot is caused by water + soil in the pot. Thats why if you use well draining soil it will give the roots enough air pockets. In fact if you watch my video on growing plants in water you will realise tht plants dont rot in water unless the water is contaminated.. but in soil the same plant will rot instantly due to the soil and pathogens and microorganisms largely. I've grown snake plants in water and nothing has ever rot :)

I grow rosemary hydroponically and it's doing way better than my (dead) soil rosemary. 😂 It's also suprisingly easier and not as demanding as when I grew it on soil. I only need to keep the water temperature low and aerate it to avoid root rot.
You are right, rosemary actually loves water and organic matter with aerobic microbes in the soil. It hates when the water and organic matter is standing in the sun until it becomes an anaerobic environment. The reason rosemary dies in the tropics is that water pools in the soil and gets hot, suffocating and cooking the roots. unlike the high altitudes that the plant is native to, where the rain comes in fine mists and drizzles and the soil drains fast, leaving only residual water.
Hi ,how are you ?your video inspired me .i have one question. My rosemary plant is healthy and green also .it is almost 2years .but I don’t know why not coming any flower from my plant. Plz suggest me .thanks in advance
Hi there. Thank you for visiting :). Hmm my rosemary never flowered too so i am not the best person to answer this. But a roseMary should eventually bloom once it is matures and when the environmental conditions are right. Usually if it's not flowering likely your soil is very high in nitrogen so it's a happy healthy leafy plant. Cut back on fertilizer and give it lots of sun. Once it's in the right condition it will naturally bolt and flower.
We just bought rosemary and they keep dying within the week. It's the rainy season so we haven't brought them out to the sun. The place where we bought them is a covered area as well and they looked fresh. I wonder what else is wrong? We didn't repot.
Make sure the Rosemary stays mostly dry and keep it on a windowsill if you can so it still gets sun. It needs 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day. Only water it once every 1-2 weeks or when the surface of the soil is dry. Also it needs nutrient rich soil, as well as a layer of mulching (wood chips, or gravel) for good drainage. It’s like a cactus so you don’t have to mess with it often. Just make sure when you water it you don’t overwater it or the roots will rot. A light misting will do
I put my rosemary under full morning sun, fertilize using humus liquid every 2 weeks, using soil with alot of perlite. It starts to develop some dry burnt mark at tip of the leaves. It is due to overfertilize or overwater?
Hi! Do u water daily or it gets too much rain? . maybe check soil first before watering. Overwatering can cause brown tips yes. Humus liquid generally should not burn i use on my plants and since it is organic and diluted form it is safe. But rosemary can be sensitive as well to fertilizing so best to cut off now. Hi thanks for your video. May I know what is the best medium for growing rosemary in the tropics? I heard 2 parts Perlite, 2 parts LECA and 1 part peat moss. Is this ok? Can I add or use sand? Thanks!
Hi! Thanks for asking this is quite a crucial subject matter for rosemary. Tropical weather means a lot of rain and that is high risk for the rosemary. So adding drainage materials into your pot to drain water quickly is important. I personally do not hv a regimented recipe but my main focus is increase drainage . Yes you can root Rosemary from stems in water. From experience the sunnier it is the better for the roots to work. Changing water is also required. Then you can plant that stem to grow a new plant.
I already done many ways to keep mine alive but my rosemary not long lasting… it is the most hardest herb to me…compare to dill, sage and italian basil…so easy to care.. mind you sharing how to propagating rosemary?

I am fr the Phil, and Ihave a healthy rosemary plant, bit my previous plants were healthy until I prune them. After some cuttings, white spots appeared on the leaves, and eventually they rurn to brown, and affect the whole plant. Why os this so? Thank you for sharing your tips.
hi there! to me any kind of white spots that are not powdery or in any tangible form, meaning the spots are within the leaf itself sounds like the work of leaf sucking insects. It could be spider mites, aphids or thrips and these will damage the plants. It is a very common problem with rosemary and some herbs though. Both spider mites and aphids are detectable... just check for insects or webs under the leaves. However for thrips, they are less detectable as they move and fly around. I've had this experience before where my entire rosemary plant had these white spots and eventually the plant dies. As for leaves browning, it could also indicate overwatering.
Hello. You are right it holds water but technically it does a marvellous job in balancing out excess water too. My understanding is that it keeps just enough moisture for the roots and does not pull up water. This way the roots will have enough air to breath. The other common tip is you can add perlite to the cocopeat.
Also would like to add if you are using cocopeat do avoid the rain as continuous rain would really soak. My pot remains under the shade away from rain but it gets enough sunlight to thrive
Hi! Unfortunately no..i lost tht one to black aphids as i don't have any insecticides or pesticides.. However I managed to start some small seedlings from the cuttings. I had to start with a new plant again.
Any of the shoots still healthy and green you can cut and propagate? If it's all browning already is best to start a new plant again. Rosemary will die easily with too much water
@@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday Fyi I've read that rosemary being a hardy plant can actually be dead inside a good amount of time before you can see any visual signs of it. I’m from Malaysia and I’ve killed every rosemary plant I’ve ever owned by following the advice of experts who say rosemary comes from a dry Mediterranean climate and only water sparingly into a well draining soil. Over the years I’ve killed many rosemary plants by doing exactly that. Recently I had the exact opposite advice from another channel from a horticulturalist from Cairns, Australia, which is to keep the soil damp by watering as often as once every day or every 2 or 3 days. I really am confused.
hi! sorry to hear that I do struggle with rosemary too. I always have problems when the rainy season comes here in Malaysia. My rosemary will go. And this happens all the time after several good months of flourishing rosemary... because the rain and wet potting medium means the soil is always moist and do not have a chance to dry out. I believe if your potting medium is very porous and well draining, having more water in your rosemary will not likely to kill it. But however if your potting medium is always wet, it will be a problem. It should dry out first before the next watering. Unfortunately if there is lots of rain, the chances are the rosemary will suffer. That's usually my problem.

@@ALong-fo5so For me, Rainy season plant must avoid, change deeper location into roof area. And If plant big enough make sure to start/propogate right away. Also when the plant looks dying, just cut fresh cutting and propogate, stick in pot, until its "risen" or die lose all leaves
The problem is not researching well enough. So, FIRST STEP, you decided you want a rosemary, so now what!!? Before even buying the plant i recommend to research where the plant is native, learn as much as you can about the climate, rain volume, type and dept of soils, hours of sunlight, etc. SECOND STEP. Replicate as much as you can those conditions. Pretty simple. See, some people in Australia can tell you to do that because maybe they have similar conditions of all those things i mentioned, meanwhile in other places they will tell you to avoid water as it is too tropical and humid to be doing that. In my case, i live in the tropics (rainy) and our soils are heavy clay. That combo a 100% of the time will dry out your rosemary. So what i do is simple, i use a extremely loose soil and water every other day.... The Rosemary will always recover from a drought but not from overwatering and root rot.
Hi! I've not sprout from seeds before. I've always grown them from plants and cuttings. If it does not sprout usually the medium and temperature could be the cause. Try to sprout in coco peat as the medium balances moisture well and put your seed pot at a bright spot and water it ..hope it will work
hi! cocopeat is just a medium it wont have nutrients. You can use it but it u will have to put in nutrients for the plants as they need. If you add any other thing, i would suggest amendments to improve drainage :)
Suggest you to check your roots if they are okay. Repot them to a dry medium if roots are still ok. Assuming the plant is alright overall then trim away the brown. If it looks bleak then i would salvage any green healthy stems to propagate.
Cocopeat will do both retain and drain water however from experience if u are growing this way..you need to keep the pot away from rain and control the watering. It works if you can manage that.
How about bugs infestation? My rosemary have this small black bugs all over and some of my rosemay is already dead due to these bugs. How to kill these bugs?
oh those sounds like aphids.. cut affected leaves and stems away... including these bugs. They will spread really fast and yes they do kill most plants. Use any organic sprays for killing insects i think would help. Most ppl would use neem and some soapy dishwash... do google and try.
Sorry to hear tht. Yes spider mites are a pain. If you can save the plant find the stem that is still green and healthy and propagate..if not.. it's better to restart.
this is a clear simple explanation of growing rosemary, thanks for the hard work. much appreciate it

The Rosemary will always recover from a drought but not from overwatering and root rot.
hello! im just wondering if you are using plastic pot or terracotta pot for growing rosemary?
Hi i use plastic pots mostly for my plants and veggies. Rosemary too
Can you teach how to sprout from seeds? I tried but it’s not sprouting
Hi! I've not sprout from seeds before. I've always grown them from plants and cuttings. If it does not sprout usually the medium and temperature could be the cause. Try to sprout in coco peat as the medium balances moisture well and put your seed pot at a bright spot and water it ..hope it will work
Is it okay to use pure cocopeat for the soil? Or should i mix with something.?
hi! cocopeat is just a medium it wont have nutrients. You can use it but it u will have to put in nutrients for the plants as they need. If you add any other thing, i would suggest amendments to improve drainage :)
What to do if rosemary turns brown?
Suggest you to check your roots if they are okay. Repot them to a dry medium if roots are still ok. Assuming the plant is alright overall then trim away the brown. If it looks bleak then i would salvage any green healthy stems to propagate.
isnt that cocopeat retain more water than others? and rosemary like it dry? im confused
Cocopeat will do both retain and drain water however from experience if u are growing this way..you need to keep the pot away from rain and control the watering. It works if you can manage that.
@@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday thank you
What is your soil?
hi.. the rosemary is in cocopeat but you can also use soil but add in lots of amendments for drainage
How old is that rosemary??
i cant remember lol. definitely more than 5 months but less than a year.
Omg i am done with Rosemary! I live in Trinidad and the spider mites!!! The dried leaves and stems! Omg helpppp
Sorry to hear tht. Yes spider mites are a pain. If you can save the plant find the stem that is still green and healthy and propagate..if not.. it's better to restart.
@@GROWSOMETHINGGREENtoday thankyou!
