Mariel Hemingway in her autobiography spoke of Allen trying to convince her to go to Europe with him. He was then visiting her and her parents in Idaho after the filming of "Manhattan". Hemingway sensed this was not a platonic invitation and being a smart teenager, she did not accept. Thanks for a great review.

@@msw8839 I hope you aren't a fan of pretty much any rock stars, then. You must *really* loathe David Bowie, John Lennon, Jimmy Page, pretty much any male star who was big in the '60s and '70s, who had sex with teen groupies who have since gone on the record. Some of those groupies have written memoirs about their experiences.
My position is that it's for Ms. Hemingway to be offended or not. She said no and that was that. She was 17, as you say, not 11 or 6. And this has f***-all to do with a charge of child molestation of a 7-year-old.

To say Mia was woody's Exgirl friend is misleading. They were together 12 years and presented themselves as common law husband and wife in public and certain circles where it was to their advantage. NY and CT have very different divorce laws. Had they moved in together their individual fortunes would have been attached in divorce proceedings. Soon Yi was brought up with Mia as her mom and woody as a surrogate dad/father figure. It was wrong for woody to have sexual relationship with her while in a relationship with her mom or even after and then to enlist her in the cover up of that affair. There is also potential that he groomed her for years for a forthcoming sexual relationship.

@Kevin Shaughnessy Sun yi was Mia’s daughter. That’s not in dispute. Woody was aware she was Mia’s daughter, and he even acknowledged she had problems in that audiobook. Instead of trying to be empathetic, and help her he uses it as an opportunity to wedge between her mother, and have his way with her. I get an impression Mia was timid with Woody, and he shamed her into signing those adaption papers. Everything I see points to a predator.

It’s too bad our society has historically made it very difficult for victims to come forward and feel supported. I believe this is one of the biggest reasons we’re seeing so much hashed out in the ‘court of public opinion’. Also, I don’t think that’s such a bad thing, as it is sparking some important conversation. I was raised on Woody Allen, and loved him for years. In 1992 when the allegations came out re: Dylan my gut told me it was true. My gut was informed by my intake of his interviews, his books, and his film. I allowed the media blitz by Allen’s PR army to lull me back into a mild state of cognitive dissonance. I don’t want it to be true, but I believe Dylan. I think Woody is a very slick wolf in self deprecating sheep’s clothing. His is probably the most convincing mask I’ve seen on a child predator, and I’ve seen a mask or three. Thanks for the video!

Many years have passed since then, and I have gathered plenty of facts since then. It’s possible to have a gut instinct, and gather facts. My initial confirmation bias was to find him innocent. As time has passed, and I’ve gained more knowledge (mostly through public records), and informing myself about child sex abuse, how it’s treated, and statistics on reporting, indictment, conviction, etc. my opinion has become more open to the idea that Dylan is telling the truth. I don’t claim to know for sure, and no one else can either, unless they were there. So there you go, I’m good on info. Thanks.

No movie, script, or piece of art is worth the innocence of a child. Sorry. When you are abused, raped, or assaulted it sticks with you forever. It changes the person you were or who you would have been. I lived with mine for over twenty years and at 40 years old I’m still dealing with the affects. That pain you see in Dylan is the pain of knowing what happened to you but having other people determine what that pain is worth. Anyone who can still look at Woody Allen and be ok should question why. How much is your child’s innocence worth? What if this was your child, how would you feel if a movie was worth the dismissal of your child’s pain?
I don’t care how fantastic Woody Allen’s movies are, he is a predator. Also, I don’t think Dylan thought all those celebrities were all speaking out specifically just for her or this was all for her, I think she just was grateful to FINALLY be seen! You don’t understand the amount of extra pain that comes with suffering silently and the shame and fear that comes with not being believed. Our society still gets it so wrong when it comes to victims.

Yes, I get it, engaging in a relationship with your former lover's daughter is not something that most people would approve of (as if their approval is at all necessary). But it is neither illegal nor even immoral; it's just unusual and even weird. People do not need to be "accountable" for doing something unusual or weird. And groomers almost never marry their victims; they move on to the next one. Contrary to what some would argue because they lack knowledge of the facts, Woody Allen was never a parent or father figure to Soon Yi. He had almost nothing to do with her until she was around 19 when Mia asked him to spend time with her and get to know her. Their physical relationship did not happen until she was at least 20 years old. So, when did this supposed "grooming" happen?
Finally, if you are somehow referencing the alleged sexual abuse of Dylan Farrow when talking accountability, the overwhelming evidence that is publicly available (and it is a lot) points to the likelihood that the alleged event of sexual abuse never happened. The evidence does show that Mia was and still is her abuser (and an abuser of her other non-white kids), not Woody Allen.

@@buzzcrushtrendkill You seem to have some synapses missing. Your sarcasm is silly and trite. Very easy to say "would you feel the same if it were your daughter." That's a freaking cop out and an easy way to deflect that you do not know the facts. The fact is, whether or not I think it was a good idea for these two to become involved, Soon Yi was "of age" when the physical relationship began (20 or 21) and there was nothing illegal about it. As for morality, I am not into judging people that way and I will deal with my own personal life and children as I deem appropriate, thank you very much.
You throw out pedophilia and obviously do not know what that means. Not sure if you are relating it to Soon Yi, which would be silly because she was of age, or Dylan. In any event, pedophilia is a disorder that is compulsive and demands repetition, and where the perpetrator's sexual attraction is exclusive to pre-pubescent children. We know about many of Woody Allen's adult relationships, including with his current wife, and other than the single alleged event of abuse at the Farrow farmhouse, not a single other allegation of abuse has been made against him in his 86-years on this earth (and none involving his two adopted daughters, who reportedly adore him). If he is a pedophile, he is not a very good one. Woody Allen is not a pedophile.
Regarding Dylan, it is well documented that this alleged event of abuse, if it happened, happened once (which makes the allegation even more incredible). This does not fit the profile at all. Moreover, Dylan was alone with Woody Allen many times before the day of the alleged abuse, which purportedly occurred in the Farrow house under the watchful eyes of at least 10 other people (during a custody battle). Yet, this so-called pedophile never once abused her before that? Does that make sense? And, although a different matter, it is noteworthy that there has never been a single allegation of sexual impropriety or harassment from any woman who ever worked with him even though the majority of his staff for 40+ years have been women.
Interesting how you mention his looks because that's a big part of all of this and it screams of anti-semitism and racism -- a small, Jewish man who has stereotypically Jewish features (how could anyone find HIM attractive) with a young, plain Asian woman whose looks many have been unkind about. If this had been George Clooney and a 20-year old Japanese Vogue model, nobody would have thought twice about the relationship. Dian Cannon and Cary Grant; Bogie and Bacall; Elvis and Priscilla; Seline Dion and her husband. Few batted an eye because they were glamorous, usually pretty people. When the Friends character Monica was with Tom Selleck, nobody screamed PEDOPHILE!! or even that it was inappropriate.
Oh, and fact is, many women have said that they find Woody Allen sexy because he is smart and funny, and they like Jewish looking men. They are out there.
Even though you are likely dug in, here is a bunch of stuff to read and watch. Time for you to learn something because the HBO series was a Farrow sponsored, hagiographic, fact deficient hit job:

Again, I haven't watched the it, but as an adult, if I'm asked to tell the same story more than 10 times, inconsistency begins at maybe 7 and by 15, I'm not even sure if the story would appear to "add up" at all. Moses is hedging his bets. As the only child that is defending his adopted father, he stands to inherit quite a bit of money one day. He’ll recant, again after pay day. As far as Mia’s children committing suicide, perhaps they were silent victims of Woody also, who saw the injustice that was done to their family and took their own lives. Woody Allen is a Narcissist, just like R. Kelly. They both use their art to lull us into acceptance of their anti social behavior. White privilege and $$ helped Woody avoid jail. Try reading Robert Evans book on his producing Rosemary's Baby, and how she agreed to extend her time in shooting the film as needed, though she had previously agreed with Frank Sinatra, her new husband, that she would be available to work at an earlier time so she could proceed with her role in a film he was scheduled to film. This was the straw that broke the camels back for Frank, who then told Mia that it (the new marriage) was over, and he walked out on her. During this push and pull period, Evans had stroked her ego so profusely in promises that she was sure to obtain an Oscar for her performance, after he had viewed the early rushes of her work on the film up to that point. She was then faced with being pulled from two sides. The director, Roman Polanski wanted her for more shooting, though she was legally (by contract) permitted to end her participation and proceed to her new film with Sinatra. Evans claims that her ego was so inflated by his raving over her performance that she re wrote and "signed-on" to the Rosemary's Baby contract, and snubbed Frank, and his own production of a Tony Rome detective film, in which he also starred (but no longer with Mia)..
It may be productive also to take a look at her earlier childhood where she was sexually abused by her own father, John Farrow, then a very famous and successful Hollywood director. What he had been equally famous for (within the Hollywood studio circle ) was his continuous and widely recognized philandering with young film beauties, even while he was married to one of its most beautiful and successful lovelies, Maureen O'Sullivan (Jane, in the Weissmuller Tarzan movies), who "played" Mia's mother. That very strained Hollywood marital relationship was given an autobiographic (around Mia's biography) artistic treatment in Woody's very successful "Hannah, and Her Sisters", where Maureen O' Sullivan "played" the mother of Hannah (performed by Mia), and was married to just such a philandering Hollywood entertainer, played by Lloyd Nolan. Three of Hannah's (Mia's own adopted) children characters were "played" by Soon Yi Previn, Daisy Previn, and Moses Farrow. Fletcher Previn was also cast as one of the "Thanksgiving Dinner guests" in the film but not identified as one of Hannah's (Mia's role) children. One of the film's subplots in the film dealt with this ongoing battle between the historically unfaithful husband (Hannah's, and presumably Mia's Dad, John Farrow), with his beautiful and faithful wife (the Maureen O'Sullivan role). No treatment is given in the film to Mia's actual brother who is now in prison for sexually grooming, and then raping two young boys. Nor of her (Mia's) uncle who also went to prison for sexual abuse of young children.
A rather sordid biography in all respects, and one worthy of minimal investigation prior to casting stories at those people accused of wrongdoing by that very same highly questionable human "character" from life.

I just watched the first episode. And I think you did a great review. I am not positive but I probably will watch the other episodes. Everyone is going to have their own opinion but I’m inclined to believe the seven-year-old girl over Woody Allen. She would have no reason to lie but he would because if the charges are true And A jury convicted him he would lose his freedom and his career. Dylan kept saying that she thought the situation was just the way daughters and fathers were as she didn’t really have anything to compare it with and that is the problem with young children experiencing abuse they don’t know the word rape or sex or concepts of sexual abuse so they’re very limited in the words they have to use to explain it and And the grownups who abuse them - especially if they or their parents - have absolute power over the children’ so The kids really don’t have a chance to voice their truth in a way most adults can understand, not at age 7. it just seems very real to me that this happened to her. I myself am a survivor of childhood physical and sexual abuse.

Ever the drama queen that one. Upon her breakup with him, she was welcomed into Dory's home only to seduce Dory's husband into an affair that lead to Mia getting pregnant with twins & the breakup of the woman Mia claimed was her friend & her marriage. With friends like Mia, no one needs an enemy since Mia's actions & unstable behavior caused Dory to have a breakdown.
You should familiarize yourself with Dory's songs she wrote after the timeframe. Especially the song tiled, "Beware of Young Girls" and in particular, "With My Daddy in the Attic" that was about her father's PTSD from fighting in WW1 & how he locked his family in the attic for a few days during one of his episodes. Some contribute the song to incest but it's about mental health.
Mia was aware of Dory's lyrics & how it became part of Mia's claim about Dylan's aledged molestation. In 1992 when Mia threw that claim out there, Dory herself told Woody that Mia's attic claim was taken from her song & Moses has confirmed the attic was not possible or available for kids to play in nor was there a model train set-up there either.

Thanks for the review of this documentary but does the documentary show any pictures of the attic in a home Mia Farrow still owns? Because Moses said there was no train up there so that could clear that part of the story up. Does it address Dory Previn song "With my daddy in the attic"?? A song Previn said Mia use to love to sing before she stole Andre from Dory?? Also does the documentary address the fact that if Moses was just speaking out against Mia for monetary gains why is he so CONSISTENTLY on her behind he makes videos all the time talking about the abuse him and his "non-white" brothers and sisters suffered at her hands. Or how hard it is to adopt children of you have child sexual abuse allegations against you and Woody and Soon Yi have 2 adopted daughters? A lot about this story doesn't add up because I remember when this case happened at the time and to say the world was on Woody Allen's side initially is false because the media wanted him to be gulity about Dylan because of Soon Yi. He was just able to get his career back because several agencies not just Connecticut-Yale found Dylan's story inconsistent. And why if your child was alleging sexual abuse wouldn't you want to go to the police? That doesn't make sense unless you don't want to file a false police report. Plus Dylan can STILL press charges so the documentary saying she can't is false. I am not saying any of this as a Woody Allen fan....I have only sat through 1 of his movies all the way through and that was 'Blue Jasmine' so if he was gulity it wouldn't make or break me but the Farrow's story doesn't make sense

According to Nancy Sinatra, if that's the daughter you're referring to, she never for a second thought Ronan was her father's child. In fact she was annoyed at Mia for saying that, and says it was a joke on Mia's part. A bad joke but a joke.

Boy oh boy. For victims, Mia, Dylan, and Ronin are milking this for their own financial benefit. If they feel so strongly that Woody did this to Dylan, then why don't they take this back to court. Connecticut law allows them to do so. There are witnesses that have stated at the time, that this never happened. Both the court and social services stated that there was no evidence of sexual abuse towards Dylan. When Dylan was interviewed by the court. They stated that she sounded like she was coached. Also, if they feel so strongly that Woody did this and is getting away with it. Why don't they simply take it to court again. Connecticut law allows themto do so. So why don't they?

They don’t sue him because Dylan is under Mia's thumb and Mia knows that they have no case. Also, go to trial and you have the risk of losing and of public embarrassment. Try it in the media and she has complete control over the narrative.

Gentlemen, congratulations on a thoughtful piece on the documentary series. I'm a fan of Allen's work and of Farrow's acting (both with and without Allen). My reading of the case, which I have followed since the scandal broke in 1992, is that he did not molest Dylan Farrow in an attic in August 1992, although I think she sincerely believes that to be the case today. But I think you handled the material in an evenhanded and considerate way.
The only thing I want to pick a bone with is that May/December romances are not as much of a fixation in Allen's writing as they're made out to be. There's nothing like that in Radio Days, Zelig, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Broadway Danny Rose, Sweet and Lowdown, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Match Point, Alice, Blue Jasmine, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, etc. Very often, the female lead in films in which he personally acted was someone not all *that* much younger than he (Ms. Farrow, Diane Keaton, and his second wife Louise Lasser account for a lot of films among the three of them, and they're all within ten years of him). It's true that in Manhattan and Husbands and Wives, one of the two love interests for his character is a teenager, but however we feel about the appropriateness of middle-aged people and teenagers, I can't make a "therefore" conclusion about his having a sexual interest in a seven-year-old. So I think the most virulently anti-Allen contingent has tried to make too much of that.
PS - I loved the "All of Them Witches" T-shirt!

      @simonboccanegra3811 3 роки тому

Crazy and vindictive is a bit reductive for the character in Blue Jasmine, who is an attempted update on Blanche Dubois. She's unstable and makes bad decisions, but I don't think she's unsympathetic.
Allen has made about 50 films, and most have had prominent roles for female actors. Inevitably when someone is that prolific, there will be characters who remind us of ones we've already met, but I don't think he leans too much on a particular type of woman. He's written women who are poised and controlled (Gena Rowlands in Another Woman, Mia Farrow in Zelig), clingy and desperate (Anjelica Huston in Crimes and Misdemeanors), tough and foul-mouthed (Judy Davis in Husbands and Wives, Farrow in Broadway Danny Rose), imperious and theatrical (Dianne Wiest in Bullets Over Broadway), seemingly ditzy but with surprises (Farrow in Radio Days), seemingly ditzy with no surprises (Jennifer Tilly in Bullets Over Broadway), seriously mentally ill (Charlotte Rampling in Stardust Memories), bawdy yet nurturing (Maureen Stapleton in Interiors), bawdy and not at all nurturing (Elaine Stritch in September)...

@@simonboccanegra3811 All of those characters are pre Allen vs. Farrow. I can't verify that all his other female characters follow the same reductive trope because after watching those two movies, I lost interest in him as a storyteller and film maker.

@@ginapiroli6136 Bullets was a little after the split and the scandal. But I was just naming ones I was most familiar with. Allen's movies of the 21st century generally aren't as good as those of his peak period (through about '94), so I haven't seen all of them.
However, I get it if -- on artistic grounds -- he just isn't someone's cup of tea. That can be said of even the best filmmakers. I struggle with Fellini, although there are some Fellini movies I do like.

There were explicit pictures taken by Woody of Soon-yi found by Mia. Woody was caught with his head in Dylan's lap and she was found to not be wearing underwear later that day. These are undisputed facts. On the other hand Mia is overbearing with that video camera. Recording Dylan when she broke up with her boyfriend. That struck me as very uncomfortable. That is not normal parental behavior. There was some weird shit going on there.

Dylan Farrow has until her 48th birthday to pursue a civil case against Woody Allen. This will (of course) subject her claims to legal scrutiny and charges of perjury if she makes false statements. I do not think she will EVER file a case. Draw your own conclusions from that.
