How to paint and weather TOOLS on scale model tanks and armor

  • Painting and weathering tools on model tanks and armor can seem intimidating, but it is just a matter of a couple of simple techniques. It is easy to make that shovel, axe, jack, wire cutters, towline or sledgehammer look realistic and a mini work of art in its own right. I cover FOUR techniques in this video:
    04:52 - Metal surfaces
    13:24 - wood
    22:32 - Bakelite (or Tuffnel) for German wire cutter handles
    26:43 - weathered painted surfaces

    Just built the Panther G. I'll see how my camo job goes before I paint the tools. Back to the hobby after 30+ years.

    I served in a Mech Inf unit. we painted our own APCs, For those modelers that do cam paint their tools, I never recall painting the handles of our tools ever...when you need to use them regardless of the paint used they would slip from your hand so we never did..just my two bobs worth. Nice Video Dave

      Hi Neil, thanks very much for the voice of experience there. Good to get the reality from someone who actually has experience. Cheers mate, Dave

    Just a suggestion, but put the pieces on a plain light grey piece of cardboard to display and use the camera zoom. The flat surface and neutral colour allows the camera just focus on the piece rather than the background or your fingers.

    Always struggled with wood on tools, until now! I thought my metal technique was good until I saw yours. Two shovels are now in store for the DMW treatment. Thanks for this great video and the humour!

    Cracking job Dave, loved it. It's always nice, even though we all have our own way , so to speak, to see how other people do things. Glad you and your family are safe and sound back from Japan !

    This was wicked helpful! I've always found that tools look very weird with the silver/metallic grey color that most kit instructions call for.

      I am off work sick with my knees again and taking Tramadol painkillers and so am a little off my trolley at the moment. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I will make an update and let everyone know what's been going on. Cheers for asking mate. Have fun,

      Mate, that's no fun at all (I dunno, maybe if you mix Tramadol with booze it becomes fun? Or is that just dangerous?) Look after yourself, D

    Can I ask at what point you’re varnishing? I’m constantly lost with varnish. I use acrylics, I paint something laboriously, I varnish it with Vallejo gloss, I add an oil wash (oil + turpentine thinner), I go to brush some wash off when partially dry and BAM all paint stripped back to bare plastic.
    What am I doing wrong? I don’t rub too hard, use a q-tip soaked in turps, let base paints and varnish dry overnight etc. Is it that the varnish is acrylic? Can I put enamel varnish on acrylic? What if I want to add a few spots of an acrylic after the (spirit-based) wash (dunno why, maybe spotted an error)? How does the enamel/acrylic thing work? Just when I think I have it worked out, something goes wrong gahhh.

    First off, I love your videos. Especially your trip to Japan.
    I'm relatively new to armor models. Big question...do you put the tools on and paint later or paint the tools first? I've seen both and there doesn't seem to be a consensus which is best. I'm guessing that there isn't and it all comes down to personal preference.

      Thanks Paul. These should scale down nicely for wargaming armour, although the wood effect could be a little trickier at that smaller scale...

    Hi Dave Thank you that was awesome just a question how long did you leave the Oil Paint to dry before adding the other weathering techniques please and once again thank you.

    • @DavesModelWorkshop
      @DavesModelWorkshop  6 років тому +2

      Hi mate, how've you been? I found after 24 hours drying time the tool handles were okay to weather gently, but the jacking block was still tacky and when I tried to apply pigment I just brushed off part of the oil paint. After another 24 hours it seemed okay, but as a general rule the longer the better!

    can i do the thing in opposite order Dave ? i already paint the handler with brown color, so can i get the same result with light yellow oil paint ?
    PS: oop sorry , i miss the part where you say that, so no need to bother about me

    Hi Dave, thanks for sharing your techniques, very helpful and great video, one question i meant to ask you today at the expo when i met you, when you thin your acrylics would you recommend mineral turps or metho? (i use Tamiya) Thanks for the chat at the expo.

    • @DavesModelWorkshop
      @DavesModelWorkshop  5 років тому +1

      Hi Peter, I really dislike acrylics, I try to avoid using them as much as possible! But when I do use them, I thin them with plain old tap water. (I'm sure there are better ways to use them!) Cheers, Dave

    Dave, do you know what colors do I need for my dak figures uniforms, shoes, socks, skin tones, ect.

    • @DavesModelWorkshop
      @DavesModelWorkshop  6 років тому +2

      Hi Doran, for my DAK figures I just used a range of Tamiya enamel colours that were sandy/yellowy/earthy tones - from references, a lot of DAK uniforms faded quickly, so I didn't feel too constrained to a particular shade. For skin tones, I used the AK Interactive Flesh and Skin Tones acrylic paint set, and I love it and recommend it to anyone. Hope this helps. Cheers, Dave
