    How to survive: Don't go on a shark cage diving trip

    • @yannickburger9832

      or Go on a shark diving trip but do it to your level and don't do it in a horror movie... irl sharks do not normally attack divers... surfers and swimmers sometimes get attacked because they get mistaken for seals or similar animals by the sharks and then it's "only a test bite"... sometimes amputating or killing but by just going upright u no longer look like shark food improving ur chances, churning might decrease ur chances but usually u should be fine... sharks are human-friendly most of the time

    • @yannickburger9832
      @yannickburger9832 6 місяців тому +12

      And staying low is bad for u as cowering makes u seem like a prey animal that's afraid... if u just go up slowly with no sudden movement... safety spot with minimal movement and then go up slowly again with as little movement as you can ... et voilà ur on surface in 10 minutes after crashing down with the cage and go home with a little shock but no injury realistically

    • @teeboz6237
      @teeboz6237 6 місяців тому +12

      @@yannickburger9832this is all fine and dandy and I love sharks but a test bite can, in many cases lead to death. We’ve had many test bites and predation attempts even on camera within the last couple of years. If you swim with sharks you might die, the same as anything dangerous. People tend to know this and know sharks aren’t evil. But people who aren’t experienced should 100% knowingly not even cage dive with sharks as the person said.

    Movies like this bug me to no end. Sharks are not these blood thristy monsters that eat everything. They are animals, and very stupid ones at that. So if this ever happened in real life, get out of the cage and swim to the surface instantly! Don't swim super fast, just a slow calm, calm ascent, then once you are on the surface, get to the boat. You will likely have some decompression sickness, but since you would have only have been so deep for a short time it is HIGHLY unlikely it would be that fatal, and no matter how miserable it might be, YOU'D LIVE!

    Okayy so sharks are not really in a feeding frenzy when you dump a small bucket of blood into the water, of course they will check it out but thats it. Swimming out of the cage would've been the best option, if the shark approaches you show it that you are not interesting and if it gets too close you can try redirection by touching their snout. They should leave you alone after that. Its not a guarantee but what other option is there. The portrail is okay I guess but I really hate how sharks are made out to be these movie monsters when in reality they are a lot tamer than you think, just cause they look scary. Well I will probably never swim with one regardless but still.

    Awesome video! I'd like to add a bit of extra info on decompression sickness (DCS). What you had was mostly correct but I'd like to add:
    DCS can happen in as little as 15 feet, though unlikely dcs is a factor of depth AND time. Increasing depth and time spent at that depth both increase the rate of nitrification in the body. One of my issues with this movie is that the girls might have been fine to make an immediate ascent if they left as soon as they were able, although I don't believe any character in this movie would know that.
    Also, traditional dive tanks, especially the ones they use in this movie, use ambient air when filled. So while they do have nitrogen in them, it's not anymore than the ambient atmosphere mix, but the added pressure of diving is what distributes it as bubbles in your body. Referring to your air supply as "oxygen" is kind of a tabu in the diving community, as certain types of diving actually increase the % oxygen to dive at deeper depths for longer periods. Again, none of this would be known by the characters here but I wanted to share with the rest of community.

    Fun Fact: everything in this scenario is deadlier than the shark.
    Air will run out rather fast. the average male need 16l of air every minute at "normal activity". So even if we assume that both of them are calm and only need 1/2 the amount of air a man would need: they´ve got 200bar and likely a 10l tank. that´s 2000l of air. at 47m they´re breathing roughly 6l of air for every 1l of air at the surface. so their 2000l of air last them about 41mins at best (please keep in mind that t hey already used some air and that they´ll probably breathe more than 8l/minute). So yeah. within 41mins they´re dead. But that doesn´t matter. Recreational divers are only allowed to dive up to 40m down. Why? well because 1) nitrogen / gas narcosis becomes a thing in deeper (30m+) depths so thinking etc. becomes really hard, you´re unfocused and need way longer even for trivial tasks (a youtuber did an experiment where he had to put shapes in a ball with corresponding holes. took him 30s at sea level and 1min40s at 30m. these effects will be significantly worse at nearly 50m). So they´ll die from that.
    Oh and... 2) the "no decompression limit" for 42m (which is shallower than their 47m) is only at 8mins. so even if they don´t die due to asphyxiation they´ll suffer from decompression sickness. Which can be fatal in some cases. But that being said: no sane diver or captain would ever avoid a decompression incident by risking running out of air. there are recompression chambers and those have air. so while divers would try to avoid decompression incidents in this scenario both divers would immediately surface to avoid running out of air. usually they´d slowly ascend but that´s impossible if these sharks were actually interested in eating them. And they wouldn´t certainly be dead if they did make a run for it. the risk is real but it´s less risky than running out of air.
    Oh and btw: nitrogen doesn´t only get stored in the blood. it´s also stored in the tissues. and if it gets released from the tissues to fast for the body to get rid of it it can form bubbles etc. and that´s a problem. but while divers always try to slowly ascend and do a safety stop there are estimates as to how long a diver might be able to stay at a certain depth without it resulting in a decompression incident. but those numbers are rough estimates which is why divers usually use their dive computers and add a safety stop etc. to make sure they´re well within the limits even thoug some divers could theoretically stay at (for example 42m for 8mins) and immediately ascend without issues. since you never know if you´re one of those people and you don´t want to find out that you´re not... you follow the safety procedures. Decompression stops though are only for technical divers, not recreational divers. recreational divers are limited to regular compresed air / nitrox (more oxygen, less nitrogen => less nitrogen buildup => longer bottom times at certain depths), a maximum depth of 40m, etc and NO planned decompression stops. if they need to do a decompression stop they messed up. they´ll still do one but they´re not supposed to be in a situation where that´s necessary. they do however include a safety stop which is like a mini decompression stop but it isn´t required to safely ascend. it´s just added safety.
    So yeah... those two would skip the mandatory decompression stop, hope that they don´t die on their way up, immediately get 100% oxygen to avoid adding new nitrogen to their bodies and get transported to the nearest recompression chamber. they would NEVER swim back down, risk running out of air, etc.
    So yeah... even if sharks were attractd to human blood & would ignore their regular prey (fish) to munch on a human the sharks would still be the least significant problem those two would be facing in the real world. But they´re lucky. If they´re breathing regular air with 21% oxygen that oxygen becomes toxic shortly after 50m. So if they were idk 55m down instead of 47 they´d now die due to oxygen toxicity. Yes that´s a thing. 1,3bar of partial pressure (aka at sea level air with 130% oxygen (which is impossible)) is deadly to humans. And that wouldn´t set in after 40mins (air depletion) or once they go up to the surface (nitrogen build up). this would kill them at their depth in a really short time frame. likely due to cramps and thus potentially by drowning them even if their tanks are full.
    and btw the 17bar at 12:36 ? yeah... at that depth that´s at best 3 1/2 mins. that´s an immediate ascent. And the 80bar at 18:44 would be 16 2/3 mins at best. again: assuming they´re breathing with 8l at the surface aka 48l/min at depth.And at 18:58 again: no... they wouldn´t decompress. there are sharks in the water that tried to kill them, they´re both running out of air, they won´t make a decompression stop unless there´s a safer cage at 20m with new tanks. but with those sharks and that amount of air there won´t be any stops. 18m/min ascent rate (and even that could be cut short if the sharks start to attack them again) and that´s it. And that´s only if they´re confident they have the air for that ascent rate. and while the required amount of air decreases with shallower depths I wouldn´t risk it with 17bar. Oh and btw: ascent rate beats safety stop. so in re ality they´d slowly ascend at less than 18m/s and skip the decompression stop instead of doing the decompression stop but exceeding the 18m/min ascent rate.
    regarding the "banging on the cage"... water isn´t air. our ears are adapted to sound traveling through air. under water sound just exist. it has no real direction. our ears aren´t really made for locating sound udnerwater. But sharks... well they are. So yeah. your partner doesn´t know where you are (apart from noticing if the sound gets louder or fainter which isn´t exactly a foolproof navigational method) but the sharks does. Humasn use a compass to navigate underwater. if they had a compass they´d note the direction of travel and reverse that path. and yes, every certified diver needs to do that to become certified. So the only excuse for them not to use the copass is if they haven´t had any to begin with.
    23:52 5 bar wouldn´t be 5 minutes. it´s 1 minute at best. again: with rather slow breathing. so that´s an ascent rate of 50m/min. is it guaranteed that they´ll die from decompression sickness? no. but at 50m/min it´s very very realistic. and it´s their only option if they don´t want to drown
    24:09 / 24:46 ++ gas narcosis is independent from decompression sickness. gas narcosis typicaly occurs at depths of 30m or more. at nearly 50m they´d most definitely suffer from it. shortly after reaching depths shallower than 30m the symptoms would fade away. regardless of the amount of air they breathe in. gas narcosis is a temporary narcosis. which is actually beneficial for them. they´ll die. but with gas narcosis it´s less painful and intimidating. they´ll basically be high / slightly ansthesized.
    Btw even if they survived all of the other issues. hypothermia is a thing. at 50m water isn´t that warm anymore. and their wetsuits are designed for warm water. aaaaanddd.... hypothermia worsens things like gas narcosis, decompression sickness, breathing rate, ...
    putting the wetsuit between you and the cage is something most people wouldn´t be able to think about in a situation like this at this depth. human blood doesn´t really attract sharks, but bleeding out (and losing body heat...) can kill you. so yeah. thee cut is bad but it´s not that bad and given that they wouldn´t have had a single reasonable thought... it´s a good idea to use the vest to lift the cage.
    34:48 yeah... after all this time... a single 5min stop at 20m won´t cut it. decompression times increase depending on depth and duration. up to a certain point. it doesn´t really matter if you´re at 200m for 5h or 50h, once your tissue is fully saturated it´s fully saturated. that´s a trick divers who´re working udnerwater use. they stay at the bottom for days / weeks and get supplied by a ship above them. at the end they get pulled up in their housing / compression chamber, spent a lot of time dcompressing in there and then they´re on vacation.
    The flare probably wouldnßt keep a shark at bay though.
    35:20 yeah... no they wouldn´t drop their equipment. they´d inflate the vests so that they float at the surface or they´d resurface if a shark pulls them down, bites off a part of them andspits them out. removing the equipment is stupid. it keeps you afloat, it supplies you with air, ... the benefit of saving 5 seconds will haunt you if a shark catches you, pulls you underwater and you drown because you don´t have an air supply anymore
    35:35 yep... told ya.
    35:44 and.... again. never remove your gear unless you need to do it.
    but yeah... a hallucination like that is probably the most realistic part of this movie.
    what would I do? Assuming I´m not suffering from gas narcosis there are just two options:
    1. find a protected way to the surface and slowly ascent for as long as possible using that protection
    2. if there is no protected way, only the open water, a direct ascent exceeding the safe rate of 18m/min, no safety stop.
    after that... breathing 100% pure oxygen on board of the ship, wait for the helicopter to get me to the nearest recompression chamber (just in case).
    So yeah... it´s a movie so you can´t alway expect it to be completely accurate but a few mistakes made were just too glaring. especially the times, safety proocedures and potential medical issues.

    The original ending was so much better. Basically it cuts to her hallucinating in the cage, but she never snaps out of it or realizes it. She is just staring at her hand laughing as the camera pulls back and shows the sharks circling. Then fade to black and credits. People thought it was too depressing so the director added that bs about the crew somehow finding her.
