this game used 3 keyboard keys:the spacebar was the fan, used to blow away the ghost. A second key was used to set dynamite-to blow big mounds like at the end. you could also shoot up a flare to scare away the bat.(D and F?)
This is one of my all-time favorite games. The game was originally released by MicroGraphic Image, and was later re-released by Broderbund. The version in the video is the original; the Broderbund version has a different intro. Thanks for posting.
LOL. D = Dynamite (To blow up the big hills with), Spacebar = Ghost Fan (To dispatch casper), and F = Flare (Takes care of the bat problem). I still remembered this from when I played this as a kid back in the early eighties... Amazing how I remember this but then forget my keys sometimes!

@Harmik2 NES Spelunker had some fantastic music, but the controls were twitchy, even moreso than the original version. Broderbund's original version played much better.
This is nice on the Atari and even outdoes the arcade version in terms of it's warmer colours used - arcade feels cold in comparison i find C64 has a neat version too

Then because of its difficulty, it was hatred and loved, and then remakes came to pc -The first Remake is a freeware game called spelunky (now AKA spelunky classic: www.spelunkyworld.com/original.html Its free and resambles it quite alot. It has a great replayability, good retro graphics, and good soundtrack. It's actually one of the possible branchs of the history of the first game (the atari/commodore/nes protagonist is the spelunky's father). It has an end after several randomly generated levels. Yes, its levels are procesudally generated, so every time you fire the game up its a different experience. -Then there was spelunker HD for the ps3, another branch that came from the original, this one is closer to the original game, but remade with really good graphics and faithfull to the old ones. I think its protagonist is also son of the original spelunker from the atari/commodore/nes. -Then there was spelunky HD for pc/xbox/ps (a remake of the 2008 freeware spelunky, but now paid), it has multiplayer (local), a hell of alot more content, really cool cartoonish graphics, part of the spelunky family. -Then there was a ps4 only game, spelunker world, part of the branch of the spelunker family, its mostly a alternative game to the ps3 one, you're the son of the original spelunker, but this one has tons of pay to win, and the game itself is/was free in psn for the ps4. It has several levels, but they aren't procedurally generated and some time in the game they start to get kinda repetitive. It has a online multiplayer and possibly a local one too. -Spelunker party This one is a pc and nintendo swtich game, this is spelunker world but done right. It has a really good content, has local and online multiplayer, its well made, run in 60fps, and is probably the latest of the spelunker decendants that was made until this date. What i would say it to either get the freeware 2008 spelunky, or buy spelunky hd, or get spelunker party. If you have a ps3 spelunker hd would also be agood option toghether with spelunky HD. If you have a ps4 spelunky HD would be the best bet, but spelunker world is ok and free in there. Now, if you really want the exact old game you played, get the original console and the original game OR get a emulator and the game itself. I would go for the commodore 64 version tho, usually commodore games may have a good soundtrack, but there is the option to get the old atari one or even get the really hard nes version. You know, if you like this game you should really try 'Spelunky', a free downloaded game for the PC based on this game. It's really fun.
Yes you can play this game on modern system. You have to download Atari emulator - like atari800, and download the rom image of this game
