Welcome to this informative video about buying gold and silver as an investment. In this video, we'll be exploring the different options available when investing in precious metals with a budget of £500 or £5000.
Let's start by discussing the options available when investing £500 in gold and silver. With this budget, you could purchase small amounts of both gold and silver, such as a few grams or a couple of ounces. Alternatively, you could invest in a larger quantity of silver, such as 100 ounces.
When it comes to composition, gold is a much denser and heavier metal compared to silver. This means that even a small amount of gold can be worth a significant amount of money, whereas a larger quantity of silver may be required to achieve the same value. Therefore, it's important to consider the different ratios and values of gold and silver before making a purchase.
Moving on to investing £5000 in gold and silver, you'll have a wider range of options available to you. For example, you could invest in larger quantities of both gold and silver, such as 1 kilogram of gold and 1000 ounces of silver. Alternatively, you could invest in a combination of coins and bars of varying sizes.
It's important to remember that the prices of gold and silver fluctuate constantly, so it's crucial to keep an eye on the market and understand the factors that can influence prices. Additionally, you should consider the purity and authenticity of the gold and silver you're investing in, as well as any associated storage and insurance costs.
In conclusion, investing in gold and silver can be a great way to diversify your investment portfolio and protect your money against inflation. When investing with a budget of £500 or £5000, it's important to consider the different options available and their composition, as well as keeping an eye on market fluctuations and ensuring the purity and authenticity of your investments. Never really been bothered by the gold/silver ratio with the stack to be fair. I just buy what's good value at the time. Every now and then I'll offload some of one and convert it into the other when the price is in my favour. It's a constantly moving feast, but the end goal is simple - increase the stack :)

I approach it as a goal... not a budget as such - 200oz in Silver, 5oz in Gold as an emergency stash to start with, slowly make your way there :) - once there, you can diversify, or just expand.

Great presentation, thanks. I have all silver at the moment, and starting to think about small denominations of gold. I have junk silver too, and I like it because, at pre-1964, it may soon disappear. Good stuff for barter or small purchases if there is a serious crunch or depression.

Though in my £500 budget stack, I would make sure to have some 2023 year Britannia, King Arthur, Yale of Beaufort coins, as these are 2023 minted coins with Queen Elizabeth's head on!
These could have a small collectible premium in the future.
Also grab a few of the first Charles III coins as those can become collectible too!

They are all better coins to collect than most other generic silver coins or nom 2023 ones.
At least these coins have more of a collectability factor about them I really do think. Could demand a small premium.
Tudor beasts is a sleeper series I think. Though I only like the bullion versions.
Agree with you on the sovereign's though but a rare sovereign is not within a £500 budget I don't think.

I would go for coins rather than bars in the UK. Coins from the Royal Mint are exempt from capital gains tax. For the £500 budget it wouldn't really matter but if you are investing thousands in bars and kept them for a few years, you may have to pay tax on the profit. Gold coins also have the benefit of being VAT exempt which means you can buy from a dealer and not have to pay an extra 20% on top.

    • @timjanssen5889

The £500 budget should have the full sovereign, You get the gold piece of the jigsaw first, i would advise anyone thinking of stacking to save up a budget that could get the initial gold coin/bar then you buy each new item to protect that first purchase, my first purchase was a 5g gold bar, then it was a 2011 half sovereign and everything i have stacked in the following 12 years has been to protect those initial purchases. But ooooh what i could do with a 5K budget.... (russells brain has left the chat and now in its own world of imaginary contemplting such delights)

If you are in the UK buying silver ,none UK PMs, or bars for stacking is illogical , makes slightly more for collectables but that's difficult to predict . Higher premiums , VAT ( buying tax) , CGT ( Selling tax) the weight the bulk etc pure lunacy. The sensible option would be a combination of gold sovereigns and 1oz Britannia coins which is what advised my mother when she had £5000 to spend . The higher premiums at the buying end for coins is more than made up at the seling end .

Then for each metal based on each year , each two years, each 5 years , each 10 years, each 20 years and 25 years, and 50yeare, calculate the difference gain/loss . This will give you 93 prices per metal . Found out how many times gold beats silver or silver beats gold. There is a very clear winner .

Sometimes I wonder if it would just be better, because if it's cash that I came across or was given to me, and I wasn't going to miss it, I might invest in some more 10kt white gold since it is palladium gold and I can wear it as a necklace and each link could be considered its own coin

Counting Eagles at spot is unrealistic when even a dealer will give you way over spot. You can't get a tube of 25 Eagles for anything close to £500 in the UK inc delivery. You can't even get 25 rounds for £500 unless damaged/milky. What you just showed is impossible, even on TSF/2nd hand market. The cheapest 1kg bars from platinum members are selling for north of £700, more like £750-760 inc ship. The Sovs are £390-400 or more + ship and the 1oz Britannia rarely comes up but it will be £1630/1650 + ship.
With CGT being cut to £6000 this year and potentially £3000 next year, it's a mistake to buy 1kg bars or anything other than legal tender CGT-free metals in the UK. Silver does NOT follow inflation, it has little to no correlation over decades and recent years. Look up a price chart.
Honestly this is woeful in terms of both practicality and realism for anyone in the UK or USA. As for your financial suggestions (not advice) on gold/silver ratios, it's been butchered. Listen to the professionals, this is advice they will give for free:-
For a security net you buy mostly gold, 60-80%, and the rest silver.
As an investor seeking returns, with the GSR at 80, you should favour silver. In that case your stack would be the reciprocal of the above with 60-80% silver
IDK why any rational person believes we will be bartering with silver when < 1% of the population hold physical silver and supermarkets/petrol stations have none. The only widely-recognised barter silver is constitutional silver in the US. It's small enough and prevalent enough to be used for trade, as it was pre-1965. In the UK we have no such supply or recognisability in silver. If the financial system completely fails you won't have to worry about mortgages or any of that as there will be no banks. Precious metals could be exchanged for coinage or other goods and services but without a financial system to set the price that everybody agrees upon, it's more likely a large stash or PMs ends up with you being robbed than bringing you security.
Your suggestion for 1kg bars is misinformation as those are not the best bars to hold even if you decided to buy bulk metals that attract CGT. You pay lower premiums on ugly 1kg slabs for a reason, they are much harder to transport and to sell. If you're slinging kilo bars you will either be booking a loss or paying CGT. You will pay more for the bars I would recommend - 10oz . Let's investigate TSF prices:- 10oz generic bars aren't coming up for less than £300 unless in poor condition, then it's £275 + ship. More attractive 10oz bars with design features or from RM are selling for north of £300. Generic 10oz bars will cost you the least in a full buy-sell cycle vs other sizes considering the premiums you pay and the premiums you will receive when selling. Other UA-camrs have crunched the numbers on this many times, it's negligent for you not to know this. This is more important to USA stackers than to UK stackers as again, CGT is a thing that can be avoided by buying only legal tender metals
Basically that was horrible from start to finish and terrible advice for a noob, a stacker or an investor. You did ask for comments, even if they disagree. It's not so much that I disagree it's more like you're living on a different planet. I'm incredulous about your price suggestions in this video when I have seen your sales come up on TSF. You were selling tubes of 2020 Britannias for £635 inc ship, so why are you even talking about Eagles or any coin at spot (i.e. £500)? The 10oz bars you are selling for 60% over spot. Even old/milky 1oz silver coins you were selling for £25+ ship. This video is disingenuous nonsense.

Also, anyone who thinks they might have to sell 1 or 2 oz of silver, to get themselves out of a tight spot, should keep well away from buying metals.

Ok you can bring this down with bars, generic rounds or whatever you but you will never break 20% with the VAT. People investing this way tend to do so because they have less and think think they "can't afford" gold but then proceed to chuck 20% of of their savings out the window. I wouldn't buy silver in the UK 20% VAT + 10% dealer mark up puts you 30% underwater straight off. If you want silver use an ETF like PHSP.L in your tax free ISA.

Only puts you underwater if a) you buy with full VAT - you can buy from 2nd hand market at about 15 to 20% over spot and b) if you sell your silver back at spot.

@Backyard Bullion Just be careful not to go over the VAT threshold (£83k revenue), or you could end up liable for the VAT you didn't charge.

Only if you are trading as a business. If you are just an investor and you can satisfy HMRC that you don't fall under the "badges of trade" then you are fine to sell as much of your investments as possible. Then, capital gains tax will apply of course on all non exempt items (royal mint coins are exempt remember)
